Suspending Application While NetworkSQL Server Unavailable?
Jan 8, 2011My application connects to several SQL Server instances (Using SMO and ADO.net), these connections are all closed properly (I'm using Using), one connection is a SqlDependency for table change notification.
Part of the application establishes an encapsulated VPN connection to a remote system, this causes all network resources to be unavailable, including the SQL instances.
What would be recommended method of handling this scenario? Where a networksql disconnect is frequent but predictable.
I'm using connection pooling so have no control over re-establishing a connection, if I attempt to open a connection (Which retrieves an available connection from the pool) it will fail as soon as I attempt to use it. (As pooled connections are not tested to save overhead).

Using A Timer To Create A Delay?
Oct 15, 2009I'm using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.I'm working on a class. At various points, I want to insert a delay between executions of the code. Nothing terribly large. Around 50-200 miliseconds. It doesn't seem like much, but it makes the program run better. I'll probably randomize the length of the delay later between those two marks. Reading through the Timer specifications, I probably need to do some cleanup on the timer after I use it. Am I correct in this?

Is it better to use a Timer event or would a 'For I = 1 to 20000"
loop be the better option.

May 19, 2012I am currently creating a program to send keystokes to a program at certain intervals. I need the thread to delay between keystrokes, and i need to be able to have the user input the amount of delay from the GUI via textbox. I have it running perfect with Thread.Sleep(), but it just isn't consistent enough. How can I code it to be accurate to roughly 5ms up or down? thanks, and here is the code. This is in VB 2010 by the way.

Dec 21, 2009I know that time delays have been covered before around almost everywhere. however a method that forgoes forcing the GUI to become temporarily non-responsive, is all but a myth, or at least to my findings. i have the need for a GUI program to delay before the next command, however using the current method, detailed following, it causes the desired effect however it dose make it much less polished as when you click anything else on the GUI it goes un-responsive for the directed time. [Code] make a sub called say Tdelay( milseconds as integer) and have it run a loop as many times as the milseconds variable indicates and each time making the thread delay for 1 milsecond and then update the GUI/form in some way, then re-loop.

Jul 19, 2011I've been trying to use "System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(15)" as the delay code but if freeze the form. I used this "Location.Refresh()" where location is the name of the form, but it didn't give me what I need. This code is going to work on a ProgressBar while typing and the value of the progress bar change while typing. The progress bar jumps to the new value and I want it to move. So I thought about puting it in a "For ... Loop" but the whole form freezes.

So instead of constantly replicating the same code for different classes on different pages I'm trying to create an extension method to do this for me.

When I use a System.String type, I do the following:
Declare the type: Dim Str1 as String
Assign its value: Str1 = "This is a string"
I want to create a new type that just like the System.String type but in different name. For example, I want to create a UrlString type for string like this:
Declare the type: Dim Str2 as UrlString
Assign its value: Str2 = "http://www.example.com"
My question is: How do I create the UrlString type?
The reason: I want to create the UrlString type to help me to identify the value of the content. For example, UrlString type means the string is in url format, PhoneString means the string is in phone format, CreditCardString type means the string is in credit card format and so on.

May 14, 2009i want to implement in a program. I'm not asking for code just some advice and maybe a link or 3 to useful pages on the internet.I want to create a plugin system for an application that i want to make. The idea for the plugin system is based on the following...
1-Some graphics editing programs have what i think is called a filter/effects chain. its where you make a list of filters and settings that the program runs to edit the image.
2-In yahoo pipes you take small parts and use them to complete tasks for you mashup (like pulling all the images returned in a search and displaying them).
The system i want advice on is basically a plugin chain system modeled after these 2 idea's where the user selects plugin's and forms a chain out of them.for instance if i wanted to display a picture then i would form a chain of plugins like this

The code for the task's will of course be in the plugin's.The problem is i have never done any plugin system before. the hardest part i need help with is getting the plugin's loaded and sending the output's to each other. Also another problem i think is that the plugin's could be for anything (parsing text, displaying a picture, opening a url, downloading a file, etc, etc)Again I'm not asking for code just advice and some useful links to information.

Apr 28, 2010I'm trying to use system.io.packaging to create my own zip class. I've got it to work, but i'm not happy with the compression rate. In the code below I've set it to the maximum compression rate, yet winrar is able to create a zip (at maximum compression) that is 2/3 of the size when I make it. Am i doing something wrong?
