Winforms - Long Delay After Reading Events From WMI?

Jul 27, 2009

I have a windows user control that reads events from the application log of a remote server. I can read in the information alright, and it appears to happen very quickly, however the thread hangs up for about 30 seconds afterwards and keeps my application from displaying the log.

I am afraid that this is probably caused by my lack of experience in dealing with threads, but I cannot be certain. I am definitely open to any suggestions with my threading here.

The easiest way to see what I am referring to is when the btnClear_click event handler is called. After jumping through the threading worm hole, it goes to the LoadFilteredEvent method. The results load fairly quickly from the ManagementObjectSearcher, but it hangs up for 30 to 60 seconds on the next statement.

Using A Timer To Create A Delay?

Oct 15, 2009

I'm using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.I'm working on a class. At various points, I want to insert a delay between executions of the code. Nothing terribly large. Around 50-200 miliseconds. It doesn't seem like much, but it makes the program run better. I'll probably randomize the length of the delay later between those two marks. So basically the code would go...SomeFunction()timer delaySomeFuntion()I have the timer declared as

Private tmrTimer As TimerAnd each place I want to use it, I simply redeclare it. Or I might add it to the constructor of the class. Either way. Just thinking adding it to the class constructor would probably be a better idea.
tmrTimer =

[Code].....

End SubUnfortunately, I get the error "Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types"Now remember, this is all contained in a class, so theoretically speaking I can simply move the class file from project to project and reuse it, without ever having to worry about how the class works. Reading through the Timer specifications, I probably need to do some cleanup on the timer after I use it. Am I correct in this?

Create A Delay Before The OK Button Is Enabled?

Nov 4, 2009

I have a Nag Screen that I am creating, and I am wanting to create a delay before the OK button is enabled allowing the user to proceed.

Is it better to use a Timer event or would a 'For I = 1 to 20000"
loop be the better option.

All this timer would do is Enable the OK button, thats all.

Time Delay - Make GUI Program To Delay Before The Next Command

Dec 21, 2009

I know that time delays have been covered before around almost everywhere. however a method that forgoes forcing the GUI to become temporarily non-responsive, is all but a myth, or at least to my findings. i have the need for a GUI program to delay before the next command, however using the current method, detailed following, it causes the desired effect however it dose make it much less polished as when you click anything else on the GUI it goes un-responsive for the directed time. [Code] make a sub called say Tdelay( milseconds as integer) and have it run a loop as many times as the milseconds variable indicates and each time making the thread delay for 1 milsecond and then update the GUI/form in some way, then re-loop.

Create A Small Example That Explains MVC-Pattern With WPF?

Jul 5, 2010

I have an old VB6 application. I want to recreate it in VB.Net using WPF. But I am a bit confused about the "Model View Controller"-pattern. I have two books about design patterns (GoF and J.Bishop) afair this pattern is indeed not mentioned inside one of the two books. I have also searched the internet I found some java-examples. But I have still no clue how I should use MVC-Pattern (should I?) in my new WPF-application.Let's say for example my model (in fact it is more complex) is only a wheel rim (circle) with the properties Manufacturer, Diameter and Depth. The user should be able to modify the properties using textboxes and ComboBoxes.Could somebody create a small example that explaines the MVC-Pattern with WPF?Of course I like reusable classes to have a feasible concept throughout the whole application.

SQL Data Access: VB2008 / VB2010 - WinForms - Create A Datasourse And Drag / Drop Fields Or Tables On A Form To Create A Grid

Oct 22, 2010

I have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).

My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.

The user should be able enter a value into the text box, and select multiple items from both CheckedListBoxes, when they click the submit button the details will be added to a DataGridView below.

This is an example,The user enters the value Audi A4 into the textbox.

The First Checked Lsit Box is called "Colour" and from the options the user checks 'Red' and 'Blue'.

The second Checked List Box is called "Number of Doors" and from the options the user checks '3' and '5'.

When the User clicks the submit button 4 rows will be added to the DataGridView with all the different combinations, as shown below:

VS 2010 - How To Create Small App To Store Music Collection

Jun 17, 2012

I am a beginner on Visual Basic but was able to create the 'skeleton' of the application I need to build. Basically, it is an application dedicated to keeping a check on the vinyl I have. When I buy a new record, I want to effectively 'Add New Record' on Visual Basic and be greeted with a page consisting of various forms such as 'Artist' and Title'. Once these are filled in, I want to click 'Enter' and for all that information to be converted to one of the pages within my application.

Here's an easier look at it...
There are LPs that have 10" and 12" sections.
There are singles that have 7" and 12" sections.

In the 'Add New Record' page I want to also have a drop down list with the above elements in, once 12" LP is selected and all the other forms are filled in and I click 'Enter' - I want the application to send it to the 12" LP section of the application.

Create A Small Paint Component( Similar To MSpaint But Not The Same Thing) In .net?

Jun 5, 2011

I'm trying to create a small paint component( similar to MSpaint but not the same thing) in vb.net.I have a panel that holds the background image and a picturebox over the panel that I draw on. I'm using graphics to draw shapes and I have my own custom double buffer, meaning that I draw on the picturebox while the mouse ismoving and on mouse up I draw the final image on the buffer image and on paint event the buffer image replaces the picturebox image.also, i have set the form properties to enable double buffering

Me.SetStyle(ControlStyles.ResizeRedraw, True)
Me.SetStyle(ControlStyles.DoubleBuffer, True)
Me.SetStyle(ControlStyles.AllPaintingInWmPaint, True)
Me.UpdateStyles()

my problem is that no matter what i've tried the picture box keeps flickering. as long as the mouse is moving, the paint event keeps getting called and the image flickers like crazy what i need is more ideas(or pseudocode) on how to avoid flickering.
