Creating Custom Messages For Database Connection
Mar 24, 2012
I am trying to create error messages to display on a form. I added a label that is made visible if there is error.Currently if the database name is wrong the error message displays, however if I alter the connection string; example: If I misspell Server, the error label does not display and my application crashes when I try to click a control.How do I detect and display the error label, when there is no connection or a part of the string is misspelled or missing? Is this even possible? [code]

I've been viewing the tutorial at [URL]...08-088541.html but I'm still having issues creating my connection to our Oracle database. Here's my code, which uses the same connection string as one of my VB6 programs (no password required for database--Oracle picks up windows name) :
Private Sub frmMain_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'Create connection object
Dim OraDB As String = "Data Source=databaseneme;Persist Security Info=False"
Dim conn As New OracleConnection(OraDB)
conn.ConnectionString = OraDB
conn.Open()
Me.Show()
End Sub
I've been using .NET for all of 10 mins so the error may be painfully obvious!

On my development PC I have SQL Server installed, and my SQL connetion works perfect. I use a trusted connection. But on other PCs, where the program should work later, there is only a SQL "Express" installed (by another application), and it seems they have an password on the SQL Server (I guess). I have no chance to get the password from the other application. My connection is not working here. I created some connection test, but it does not seem to work with the trusted connection. I need the SQL only for creating my own database and connecting to my own database. So how do I create a connection with SQL Express for creating and working with my own database?
Here my code for testing the connection so far (Fehler means Error, erfolgreich means Success) Private Sub mnu_Verbindung_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles mnu_Verbindung.Click
Dim bolFehler As Boolean = False
Dim sServer, sDatab As String

I am creating a desktop application in vb.net by using visual studio 2008 and using ms sql 2008 as back end for my database.As I am creating application on my own system I know my connection string and I have created database manually on my system.
What I want is, when user install application on its system, the database created dynamically at that time on his system and he must enter server name, username and password for ms sql server that application should store for future use.If not at installation, it should atleast check and create database, everytime the user open the application.

I'm trying TCP communication using VB.NET and using the TcpClient method.All is working fine but I'm having trouble keeping my message seperate from each other.For example, my message have an header and footer and can range in size from very small (32 bytes) to quite large (64k). The problem I have is that when messages are being sent quickly they will arrive together. For example, if two 32 byte messages are sent they will arrive as 64 bytes. This is no good as I need to process them seperately.
So my question is:- Is there a way to easily separate my messages using a built in feature of the TcpClient so that the "reading" will give me the correct amount of bytes each time corresponding to the amount of bytes I have sent per message?

With VB.net, I'm coding a simple application to get more used to the new .Net format.
I'd like to save all the information to a 'new' database file. how to create a database on the fly, once that is done i'll be able to connect to it no problem, but actually creating the file is proving difficult to work/find out.
Also, with vb.net and the newly created custom file, how can it be made to automatically open that information with the program?
Is there a method in installation to associate the file type with the new program? How can i check when the program loads if a database file has been 'double-clicked' (rather than just running from the .exe of the program) and proceed to load the data?
EDIT1 - Extra InfoThe windows application has many different fields and content etc, then i need to save that to a file that could later be loaded by 'double clicking'. I assumed the easiest way would be to create a mini-database for each unique file

Needing pointed in the right direction. I am fooling around with data sources and connections per homework and what I'm looking for is creating an SQL DB connection during runtime. I know that you can add a data source in design by going through the Wizard but what if one would want to create the connection, adapter, and dataset during runtime? Where would you start?
I have cruzed the net looking for some form of a tutorial to just get me started, I don't need it all completely outlined but I need to know where and how to start and what I need to declare the connection, string, and dataset as. I have seen a lot of information using VB6 but nothing that I come across seems to work.
My basic questions are:Do I have to create a seperate class for the database connection?How do I delcare the nuts and bolts of the connection,adapter, and dataset?If a seperate class isn't required then where is the most realistic place these items would be created?

i am using access database for my program. now i have connected to the database in MDI form of main exe, and ir also works, user can log in, it gets verified etc etc etc. now here is the problem, when i load a form from dll and try to use any sql query on that form, i get message, "database connection is not opened". so what i did was, i added the connect() (a function i designed to connect to database) in the load part of the dll's form, it made the trick, query's started to run, everything went fine, and when i reload the form i.e after closing the form, i load it again from MDI form, i get error, connection already open..

I would like to create an order form for my ASP.net page (I included an example image below). However I don't know how to approach this. I'm assuming the best method would be a gridview but it would involve two levels of grouping. Other requirements would be be to accept a quantity and then calculate the total price. Can anyone point me to some good books or websites that explain creating custom grid views like this (or maybe a better method than using gridview, I'm open to whatever). I consider myself to be an intermediate programmer in asp.net.

Is this possible? I am trying to create my own "X" and "minimize" buttons on my form -- the only way that I can currently think to do it is by making my form have no border, and creating a 'fake' menu bar using labels and buttons for minimizing and maximizing. The goal here is to be able to have custom icons for maximize, close, etc that may not match the Windows default scheme.

Iam developing a OS using wince Kernel.It supports .net framework 2.0.
so i succesfully extracted the kernel and i booted my mips processor,Now i can see a black screen running wince kernel.
Now i want to create a form that should look like a desktop in vb.net and should have desktop Properties.cool huh?
what are the properties of the desktop.
Property-1
The Deskstop should be attached at last.
For Example:when a application is opened it should have the capability to open the application on the top of the Desktop.
and it should be locked on the background.
Property-2
If i close a application in my kernel the application is closed but the image stays still because there is no desktop background to repaint itself.so i want to create a form with the two properties above Mentioned.

I want to add a new Data Source (so I can use it with Crystal Reports) but using mysql, I did this before.
In the left side under: 'Data Sources' and then choosed 'Add New DataSource'Then I choose: Database > Dataset I clicked in 'New Connection' and I changed the first box (with 'change' button (as you can see in the image attached)) to what is showed in the image (MySQL Database..)The problem is, as I type the first letter of any of the textbox's that are below (server, user, or pwd) it closes that form showing the previous form (where I clicked 'New Connection')
Have someone had this problem ?I had a connection there, but since I changed the project from 'Framwork 4 Client Profile' to 'Framework 4' (so I could have the Crystal Report Viewer) the connection has gone and don't leaves me create it again.PD: I'm using dotNetConnector (already Added as a Reference)

I'm having a bit of trouble with my project here... and Google isn't helping very much. To put it briefly, I'm currently making a sticky note program (one fairly similar to Sticky Notes, for those of you familiar with Windows Vista or 7). It's relatively simple, as the "note" itself is basically a glorified Rich Text Box.
My problem is this: I obviously want to allow some for some customization with the font, however I don't want to use a standard full-on Dialog Box. So I designed a small form with 2 Combo Boxes--one for font and the other for size--and 2 buttons, "OK" and "Cancel". What I'm attempting to do is program this form (named dlgFont) to more or less be recognized as a Font Dialog Box. I've got some of it figured out I think, but I can't seem to put the pieces together in a way that actually works.In the code for my main form, I have this within the Class... stuff:
Friend WithEvents dlgFont As System.Windows.Forms.FontDialog
As for the Command Button that pulls up the dialog box itself, well, it's actually a Context Menu Strip Item... I'm not really sure what to put. So far I've only tried this:
dlgFont.ShowDialog
And for the Apply event, I've got the generic stuff:
Private Sub dlgFont_Apply(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles dlgFont.Apply
If dlgFont.ShowDialog = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
Me.Font = dlgFont.Font
End If
End Sub
That's all I have for the main form. This is what dlgFont looks like: 'A limited-ability font dialog box.
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Friend Class dlgFont
[code]....

I have a form that is populated with specific data for each user. The user chooses this data themselves.I plan on saving this data in the application settings or via xml serialization.What I want to do, is allow users to generate a unique code for that data so that they can supply this code to others and all they will have to do is copy and paste it into their client and that data will populate for them.I could just allow users to trade XML files, but I want it to be easier than that.The form is basically setup this way;
Picture - Data 1, Data 2, Data 3, Data 4
Picture - Data 1, Data 2, Data 3, Data 4
The pictures correlate to pictures that are numbered anywhere from 0-600. The data can be any integer value from 0 - 200.

I'm running several different automated processes and when I get done with them, I show the results in a form with various controls.
In this form, I use Panels, Labels, TextBoxes, and TreeViews, and ListViews to display a wealth of information.
When the automation part is done, I want to be able to log this info and save that log file on the User's PC.
I thought it would be best to make a custom file extension and then hash it with MD5.
I'm pretty sure I can get all of that done. The problem is that I'm not sure how I would load that info back into the application.
Since the log files will appear on a seperate form, I can't just load the data back into the original controls.
Would it be best to create a blank template of controls and then load the data into those controls? Or is there a way to save content "as is", controls and all?

I got this whole thing pretty well down (it's actually quite easy), but I've seen custom controls created where you can click that little arrow on the top-right corner and add things or change things about it.
How exactly is this done? I'd Google it (which is why you don't see me post here too often) but I really don't know how to describe it.
