Displaying List Of Objects As Single Column In A Bound Gridview (Winforms)?
Mar 15, 2010
I have a gridview that is bound to a datasource on a Windows Form (VB.NET). The grid displays a list of "certifications", and each "certification" can be associated with many languages. So in the grid, I'd like to display "languages" as a column, and display a comma delimited list of the language names for each "certification".
In the "certification" class, one of the properties is a list of "language" objects, and each "language" has an ID (guid), name (string), and value (integer).
So in the datasource, I have the list of "languages", but I can't figure out how to display them in a column on the grid. The gridview won't let me add the language list property as a column.
So is the ONLY way to add a new property on the "certification" class, which returns a string that contains the comma delimited list, and show THAT on the grid? Or is there a way to display that list of "languages"?

I have a gridview that is bound to a datasource (Windows Forms, VB.NET). One of columns is a property of type boolean, and I want to show "yes/no" in the column instead of 0/1 or "true/false". Is this possible? Can you edit displays of columns that are bound?

I am trying to make a list, separated by a comma, of entries from a single column in a SQL database. I have been spending the last several days searching for a way to do this, but every thing I found either didn't work, or wasn't exactly what I was looking for.
The query will pull all the email address that are not null. What I need to know is how to take the result of that query and make it look like this:
email0@address.com, email1@address.com, email2@address.com, etc, etc, ...
I feel like I should know this, but for the life of me, I can't remember nor can I find it in any of the textbooks I have.
I am using Visual Basic 2010 and SQL Server 2005. I also have access to Visual Basic 2005 if needed.

I have a gridview in asp.net/vb and it is bound to a list - so there's no standard sorting available. I've found this jQuery plugin for sorting tables: [URL]. The plugin requires <thead> and <tbody>. The problem is, that my gridview only renders the <tbody>.
I've already tried
DataList.UseAccessibleHeader = True
DataList.HeaderRow.TableSection = TableRowSection.TableHeader
But this changes nothing.
My gridview markup:
<asp:GridView runat="server" CssClass="grid" ID="DataList" AutoGenerateColumns="False" AllowSorting="True" ClientIDMode ="Static">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField HeaderText="SomeHeaderText" DataField="SomeDataField" />
<asp:BoundField HeaderText="SomeHeaderText" DataField="SomeDataField" DataFormatString="{0:dd.MM.yyyy}" />

I have a DataGridView (dgv) on a Windows form (VB.NET) which is bound to a datatable. One of the bound columns is a an ID (Foreign Key) to another datatable. All I want to do is Hide the ID column and populate an unbound column with the Name (ParmName) for the user. I searched the foreign value in the datatable and retrieved the information. I set the Value of the cell in the Datarow. All works well, but does not display. The cell accepts the value...I can even Debug.Print the values to the console. They are there just nothing displaying in DataGridView. Nothing odd about DataGridView. Should be straight forward...
My Code
,
Dim dtParm As DataTable = MyDataSet.tblParameter
Dim dgv As DataGridView = Me.dgvResultNum_DataGrid

Limited to using v2.0 of .Net framework (we use VB.net) due to environmental constraints on our servers.I've got an ASP.net webpage which pulls data from a webservice that performs checks on user accounts in active directory. Operators can check multiple accounts at one time using the web interface. The webservice returns a list(of AccountCheck) objects which themselves contain single properties like username, email address, and List(of AccountError) objects which contain multiple properties.[code]What I want to do is using some kind of repeater, create multiple panels or divs which contain labels showing the username, email etc, and a gridview which has the accounterror list bound to it to show all the errors. The users could be checking 2, 5, 7 accounts at once, and is dynamic.

I want it so every time I click an ITEM in the Listbox it displays ALL the data into the textbox. I know there's an easy way using table adapters and binding the listbox, but I'd prefer to do it this way for my project.
So this is what I got.
Lst.DataSource = ds
Lst.DisplayMember = "tblStudent.FirstName"
Lst.ValueMember = "tblStudent.StudentID"
[code]....
It only adds the first rows details to the text box when I click the second record the first rows details are still there.

I've been able to add my own non-bound columns to a DATAGRIDVIEW - such as a check box column.But I'm not seeing how to take a bound column and make that column be a combobox. Doesn't appear to allow that.Do I have to hide the real column and add a "fake" front-end column that I make a combobox?

I would like to use MS Office automation and have event handlers that fire for user-triggered events. For example, if the user clicks the save button in Word, I want to intercept that event and execute code in my program.
I don't want to be bound to a specific version of Word because I don't know what version my user will be running, so I instantiate a reference to Word using late binding. The problem is that the AddHandler and the Dim WithEvents commands require specific references to an object that is known at design time. Given this, how can I define an event handler without having an early bound reference to a specific version of the Word library?
I can try to a reference to an earlier version of Word with the expectation that newer versions of Word will be backwards compatible, but this seems kludgey and risky.

I have a custom control with a bindable property:-
Private _Value As Object
<Bindable(True), ... > _
Public Property Value() As Object
Get
[code]....
Also, here, I'm adding a handler to the DataBindings.CollectionChanged event.This is the second place that I retrieve the type:-
Private Sub DataBindings_CollectionChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CollectionChangeEventArgs)
If e.Action = CollectionChangeAction.Add Then
Dim b As Binding = DirectCast(e.Element, Binding)
[code]....
I need the first place, because the BindingContextChanged event is not fired until some time after InitializeComponent.The second place is needed if the binding field is programatically changed.Am I handling the correct events here, or is there a cleaner way to do it?
Note: My GetValueType method uses the CurrencyManager.GetItemProperties....etc, to retrieve the type.

I have tried to set up combo boxes in the gridview but all the combo boxes have the same value in them instead of the value from the database. I am using entity framework and WPF. There is a parent child relationship between two tables but the source for the combo box is a separate table with names and IDs for tags. I have been looking all day. Hopefully this won't be too easy to solve.
The "Tag" Column displays the combo box. The Column "Tag ID" displays the value from the database. When I display the data the TagID Changes in diffrent rows but the Tag column is the same (the first choice) in all the rows. When I change one combo box they all change. I can't see where they are hooked together.
Here is the XAML
<Window x:Class="MainWindow"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
Title="MainWindow" Height="372" Width="675" mc:Ignorable="d"

I am creating a simple website using the language of VB.NET, I am having trouble with one part at the moment and could really use some help.
At the moment I have items that are stored in a database, when the homepage loads these items are added to a Gridview which allows the user to select the items they wish to add to their shopping cart. Once an item is selected from the gridview it is added to a collection. That collection is then added to a Session. This is the code I have for completing that task.[code]...

I always useMe.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursorfor a time taking functions like hitting the DB.Now if any exception occurs, I'll display the error message as:Msgbox(ex.Message)So before displaying any message, I need to reset the cursor to default.Is there a simple way to do it at in one place instead of writing it in all catch blocks.
Is there a way to inherit MessageBox class and override the functions?Other wise I need to code it in all the catch blocks or handle all the exceptions at one place which I don't want to modify the whole application now.

VB GridView control will not allow code in the vb code file to access a data column that has its visible property set to false. When it is set to true, the data column can be accessed with no problem. Any suggestions as to how to correct this? I have looked through the documentation, text books, and I have not found anything that gave me any clue as to what the problem could be. I thought that the property was just applied to the column, not that it would remove the column from being accessible.

I have a GridView control which I am dynamically binding to a DataTable which is populated by a query built based on a set of selected options.What I am trying to do is simply handle the RowDataBound event in order to format specific rows based on the value of a database field. The code in this event handler works fine. My problem is, calling this event causes the GridView to only display the first record in the DataTable, almost as if the Gridview stops after binding to the DataTable after the first row is bound. I have attempted adding the handler dynamically, but I get the same results.I know for a fact that there is sufficient data being returned (the DataTable fills with all of the records, and the GridView shows all the records fine when not touching the RowDataBound event).
I'm adding the handler immediately after generating the query, filling the DataTable, and binding the GridView: [code]I have also determined that, when handling RowDataBound, the GridView's DATABOUND event never gets fired; it seems to stop binding right after binding the first row.

I need to write some fixed-width font (i.e Courier New or Consolas) text to a .net Winforms window in the Paint event - not using a label or any other winforms control - rather using a graphics object method to render the text onto the form's client area. I am having difficulty aligning text on different lines under headings even though it is fixed width font. How can I get a precise measurement of the width of a single character in the fixed-width font? How can I get 2 lines to print out aligned horizontally in successive text out calls?
For example:
Heading 1 Heading 2
Short Other text
A bit longer Still aligned?
I need a separate call to render each cell of text under Heading 2. For argument's sake - let's say column 1 items are printed in black and column 2 are printed in blue - we can't use the same text out call for the entire line.

In my software course, each time we submit an assignment, we have to include a document with the starting properties of each object in a form.
E.g.
TextBox1
Location: 241, 115
Name: TextBox1
Size: 100, 20
TabIndex: 0
It's a real pain to scroll through the properties viewer and copy and paste each customised value for 30+ objects on a form... I was wondering if there'd be an easy piece of code or way about getting an (at least partially) automated printout/view of all the properties of the objects.
Was thinking some sort of private sub I could past into the bottom of the program and run on load, that gets all objects, and outputs the non-default properties to a report or something?

I've a winforms application that is using SQLite database. There is no encryption on the database (data has to be shared with other user). It is a stand alone application with a stand alone local database.
The difficulty I'm encountering is when people go to bring all the data together.The databases are attached, data imported, but records are differentiated by a database GUID.At any rate I am desiring to have a database selection screen that is protected by a password to prevent users mistakenly switching databases (and some level of protection against malicious use).
Thinking it's probably not a particularly good idea to store the password in an unecrypted database.Security is not a large issue as this is only distributed to users that need the software.
What would be the best method to have the user type a password when they attempt to access the database selection screen? ShowDialog? Pop open a new child form with a password TextBox, then on validation (via button?) close the password form and open the protected form?I see a fair bit about protecting a whole application, but not so much about a specific form.

I am having a problem with objects that have other objects as properties on a property grid. Now when I display the object clsPropsFrame on the property grid, everything shows up as expected, except when I try to edit the x, y, or z of location which is of type clsPropsVec3, it ignores the change. What's strange is that when I type the vector in as a string (like "0, 16, 0"), it changes.
I have the following
'//////////////////Object Component///////////////////////////
<TypeConverter(GetType(ExpandableObjectConverter))> _
Public Class clsPropsVec3
Inherits ExpandableObjectConverter
Private refvec As TV_3DVECTOR
Public Sub New()
[Code] .....
I noticed that when I changed a component of clsPropsVec3, the property change in clsPropsFrame does not get executed. I tried making it fire of an event when a component is changed in clsPropsVec3, with the following additional
Public Property X() As Single
Get
Return refvec.x
End Get
Set(ByVal value As Single)
[Code] .....
But for some reason it ever fires off the ValueChanged event. So how can I make the sub properties of clsPropsVec3 work?

Here's the setup: I've created a class that represents a temperature and humidity monitor. This class handles all of its own operations (connects to the monitors via TCP, reads the temperature and humidity values at set intervals, logs the data, sends email notifications, etc.). I've got a single Windows form that has two textboxes for displaying the values of temp and humidity. When I start the application, I simply instantiate an object of this class and let it do its thing. Every five minutes, it opens up a socket connection, pulls in the data I want, sets the Temp and Humidity properties of the object to the values it obtained, and fires a DataUpdate event which is captured in an event handler in the Windows form.
When this event occurs, the textboxes on the form are updated with the values from the Temp and Humidity properties of the object. Works like a champ. However, I've been playing around with multithreading. Since a disconnected device will cause my entire application to block when it tries to connect, I decided to place the socket connection/data acquisition method into a separate thread. If it can't find the device, no big deal -- at least it doesn't lock up my UI. This thread is instantiated and started inside the object code, NOT the Windows form.
Here's my question, the socket connection/data acquisition method is run inside this new thread and sets the properties of the object when it's done. So, why do I get an illegal cross-thread exception on my Windows form, now, when I try to update the textboxes? It seems to me that the instance of the monitor class is running in the same thread as the Windows form. I only employ a separate thread when I want to run the socket connection/data acquisition method. Is my understanding flawed? I can display the updated property values in message boxes that are called from the Windows form. I just can't manipulate the textboxes.
