Sep 22, 2011I have written a function inside a class file which I added to my project in VB 2010 Express. Unfortunately, when trying to use this function in the main project, it cannot be seen by the compiler. The function is public. You can probably see from this that query that I don't know much about OO programming (I am assuming that the problem stems from something to do with this).

Apr 23, 2012I have a Public Class called "ClientConnection". Inside that class, I have a Public ReadOnly Property called "FileTransfers(ByVal TransferID)". The property returns an object of the class "FileTransfer". All methods in FileTransfer are set to public.
VS is able to discover the methods inside the parent class "ClientConnection". How would I expose the methods inside the sub-class "FileTransfer" that is returned by the property "FileTransfers(ByVal TransferID)"?

I am used to seeing these repository classes full of functions that return collections (among other things) of your domain objects. However, this repository had 1 public property and 1 private variable that looked something like this:
Private _item as Collection (of Customer)
Public Item as Collection (of Customer)
Get...
Set...
In the "Get", there is code that gets a the Customers from the DAL and loads it in the private _item. What would the benefits be in using a property (customerRepository.Item) instead of plain old function (customerRepository.GetAllCustomers)? The "Property" way looks odd to me but odd doesn't always mean wrong.

Feb 18, 2010For a test scenario I have a dll project. In the project I have 1 generic class 'GlobalData' and 1 form 'form1' in the generic class I would like to make a public shared newForm1 as new form1 the line of code I'm trying is: Public shared newForm1 as new form1 I get the error newForm1 cannot expose type 'form1' outside the project through class 'GlobalData'. I really need to be able to make a public shared reference to form1. Any way to get around this? Background as to why I need to do this: I have several projects that need to use Form1 as a mdi child. I would like to just update the dll and not have to go back and update the same form in 50 projects.

Jan 25, 2010How can I call a function from inside another function and suspend the calling function until the called function is finished? I hope I can get some replies because I don't know how to ask the question and make sense:).
Anyway what I am trying to do in steps:
1. The user clicks button1 which triggers the click event.
2. From the click event I call a function
3. I then pop-up a form, that has instructions for the user to read.
4. After the user has read the form he will click the "Done" button and return to the calling function.
The problem is the the calling function continues to execute. I want to stop execution of the calling function until the users clicks the "Done" button on the instruction pop=up. I know I can use a msgbox but the instructions can be lengthly and does not look good in a msgbox.
I have tried the Call method with return in the "Done" button click but I can make that work. I also tried a goto statement but I can get that to work either. In the call statement I said call frmInstruction.show() and it got there but as I said the calling function continued to execute.

Create a constructor for the Service class. When the constructor is executed, it will set the value of the class variable Started to True. Create two new classes: WebServer and DatabaseEngine. Both of these classes inherit from the class Service. Inside the Service class, declare a Sub procedure (method) named Terminate. This method should display the following text Service stopping in a message box when executed.This method can be overridden in classes that inherit from Service class.
Inside both the WebServer and DatabaseEngine class, override the method Terminate inherited from their base class Service. Both methods should first call the base class Terminate method. The messages Web server stopping and Database engine stopping should also be displayed in a message box when the Terminate method for the WebServer and DatabaseEngine are called respectively. These messages should only be displayed if the Started variable inherited from their base class is not equal to False.
Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.
In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.

Apr 14, 2009I have a "partial" class in VB.NET. Half of it is auto generated by a code generation tool. That half implements INotifyPropertyChanged, so any properties in that part of the partial class raise the PropertyChanged event.In my "custom" part of the class, I declare another property that depends on one of the properties in the auto-generated side. Therefore, when that auto-generated property changes, I also want to raise a PropertyChanged event on my custom property that depends on it.
If I go into the generated part of the class and raise the event there, that will get overwritten if I ever re-generate that part, so I don't want to do that. I would rather add an event handler in my side of the partial class that checks if the generated property changed, and if so, raise another event for my custom property.

I'm assuming it's because normally you'd use the WithEvents keyword to tell the compiler that you're subscribing to events from that object. I don't have a clue how to do this inside of the class that's actually raising the event, or if that's even possible.

Calling Function With Same Name As Module?
Sep 29, 2009I have a console application consisting of two modules. One module named "quote" is the main module for the application. Another module named "common" contains commonly used functions and subroutines that are shared between multiple applications.
In the "common" module is a function named "quote". If I attempt to call the "quote" function from the module named "quote", then I get the following error: Error 1 'quote' is a type and cannot be used as an expression. However, if I copy the quote function from the "common" module to the "quote" module, then I no longer receive this error.
There shouldn't be an issue with calling a function that happens to have the same name as a module, but only when that function is located in a different module.
