Forms :: Application Unresponsive After Moving Window (when Running)?
Dec 8, 2009
I have an application (written in VB.net 2008) which reads a text file. Parses the record and uses the second field (a UK postcode) to match an Access database (SQL - Select * from Table1 ......), then writes a text file back out with the original input postcode plus several fields taken from the access database.
I have 3 counts happening during the process, records read, postcodes matched and postcodes not matched. I move these values to labels on the form, then every 50 records read, I refresh the form (me.refresh) to update the labels (showing the end user where the process is upto).When running, if I drag the window around the screen, or minimize then maximize, or click off the window to another window, the application seems to freeze and the counter labels do not refresh.

I'm making an Install Manager and when you hit the install button a dialog is suppoed to come up saying that your installing and theres no way to track your installation and some other stuff but it only pops up after all the software is downloaded and while its installing. The finish button is supposed to show up when everything is completed that they checked off. Instead, the dialog pops up after it finishes downloading and while it's installing. It also shows the finish button before it's finished installing. Heres the necessary code
Dialog1.vb
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Public Class Package_Installation

I'm currently trying to write a football simulator but am having issues with the computer becoming unresponsive. There are long lines of code (several thousand lines) that are executed over and over as one run of the code is equivalent to one second of game time. While the game is setup to be like Football Manager where you watch the game live, there will also be cases where the entire game is simulated without you watching. When doing a full sim of a game, I just have a loop which executes the code block 7200 times (games go for two hour roughly).
At the moment this takes about a minute but even when I get it down to the desired 5-10 seconds or so, I dislike the fact that the computer becomes completely unresponsive during this time. In a round there are 9 games and you'll be simulating without watching 8 of them. You're looking at 1-2 minutes of simulation time or possibly more. I can't have a loading screen that long! How can I program the game so it runs these simulations yet the game still remains responsive? It'd be fine if the user could muck around in the menus and stuff while the simulation runs.

I am not able to find the Exclude Command in VB 2010 Express. I have no idea which version of Visual Studio it is working with. I've got one 217MB VB 2010 Express file and many 2008 VB Express files with one of them measuring 31 MB. There many other SQL files and .Net Files.

I've recently just started looking into TCP sockets for Server-Client communications in VB.Net(VS2010); which I have working fine whilst on a single form. However, when I try to load another form it calls the form_load part and runs that part, but then appears as if it's in an endless loop on the original form because the mouse turns to time out whilst on the new form. Client side Login form(works fine and is responsive)
Public Class Login
Private client As System.Net.Sockets.TcpClient
Private Const BYTES_TO_READ As Integer = 255[code]....
Tried breakpointing to find out where the loop appears to be and I think its in the doRead sub.

i have a vb.net application that plots 16 plots immediately, the plots data are realtime. the 16 plots must draw the points at the time they receive them (must be no delay), to do that
1- i made a timer with ticks at 50 ms.
2- at each timer tick call the plotting function 16 times (with a graph name as parameter)like that: [code] it made a big delay, when i used threading the application became unresponsive.

I have two forms running in the same application but on different threads. HdForm and DataForm. I have a class library whit datasets and a stack in it. Cause both forms (different threads try to rad from the same class library i use a synclock to syncronize. But it seems like the synclock dont work.I get random errors in the HdForm while reading from myAr dataset. It says index out of range. But i know for sure that the index exist (i have make sure of that). When i click on the visual studio play button then, it goes again.If the index was realy out of range then it couldn't go further. So i think the synclock does not work and thus the dataset is changed in time while im the loop reading from MyAr.

I am developing an application having multiple screens appearing one after another using vb.net. My requirement is to bring some screens (windows form) in front of the user to take input and some of the forms can work in background (behind other applications) as they are only progress showing forms.
I tried Me.active(), Me.BringToFront(), Me.Focus(), and also some of the APIs like GetForegroundWindow(),SetForegroundWindow(), ShowWindow() etc, but failed to do so.
I tried another set of instructions
Me.TopMost = True
Me.Active()
Me.TopMost = False
Its works for me but once my form come in front, no other application can appear on top untill the my form is selected manually. Although I tried Me.Select() and Me.Focus() after above mentioned set of instructions but failed.

I'm have a quite big application which have 2 serial ports and access 1 DB (running on Background workers). I'm experiencing some random locks while the application is running and I started looking for something that could cause it. One of the obvious possibilities would be if I had in the GUI thread some While_End that would never return.I have one While_End in my GUI thread but IMHO it does not look like it would lock, so I want your opinion: Does the code below looks like will lock?? If 'yes', Why ?
[code]...
Does anyone can imagine a scenario where this While_End would not return ?

I am building a simple windows form (using VB.NET) for a friend to use at work. His company has about 10 specific colors schemes (they have list of RGB values) that they use for the company logo, website etc.
I want to follow this color scheme in my application and, to simplify development, would like to build an enumeration of these colors to avoid hard coding the RBG value for every label, panel etc.
My initial thought was to do the following:
Enum ColorTypes
CompanyDarkBlue = Color.FromArgB(0,56,147)
CompanyBlue = Color.FromArgB(0,111,198)
CompanyLightBlue = Color.FromArgB(0,145,201)
End Enum
However, it's not that simple as a constant is required. I looked around on the internet and I found an example of how to achieve what I need but it seemed inordinately complicated for what seems like quite a common requirement for application development.

I'm in the process of converting a VB6.0 application to VB.Net (2008 Express). I have a MDI parent form, I'll call mdiBackground, and 4 MDI child forms, frmStatus, frmShow, frmQwerty, and frmSentence.The layout is as follows:mdibackground - has the menus at top and is a container for the child forms.frmSentence - appears at the top frmShow & frmQwerty - appear at the left and when one is closed the other one is in the same position.frmStatus - appears at the right, it has buttons which control when frmShow and frmQwerty are to appear I have a couple of regular forms that act as dialog forms. The Me.Close() works fine on these.

I'm developing a VB.net windows form app in Visual Studio 2010. I want to be able to drag the form to another location or minimize it while the app is running. Is that possible? Here's and example. I have a form with 1 button. Here's the code associated with the button:
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim time0 As Integer
Dim time1 As Integer
For time0 = 0 To 1000000000
time1 = time0
Next
End Sub
I can move the form or minimize it until I push the button. Then it freezes until the code stops running.

I want to go back to the input line in the four places in the code that say something like strinputmessage = strnegative or strinputmessage = strnonnumeric.I need to be able to go back to where you input the data so that the index does not increase.I tried using a GoTo <23> to go back up to the line i needed but then it gave me all these weird errors about the End and Next were missing.[code]

I have a winform with a main panel that is anchored top, left; dock: fill, and set to a specific size to contain another panel of content that we want to scroll through. The other panel along with a few other controls are on the main panel. Now, for some reason, after running the application the controls will be shifted down (never horizontally) some random amount. Now, the "random amount" may in fact be the last position of the scroll bar or something, but either way, it is unintended functionality. I have resorted to automatically resetting the locations of these controls on the main form in the constructor?

I know that keypresses tend to have this behaviour naturally in Windows, but when you first press down a key there's a short pause. I'm trying to use Keydown to move my Window around but it moves, then pauses, then starts moving again. Is there some way to get rid of the pause without disabling it in Windows?

If you have ever noticed in the Task Manager, when you right-click on the running task, you have many options which include 'Minimize' and 'Maximize'. Is there anyway to do achieve this in vb?
