Getting Field Values From A List Into Fields In A Structure Or Class?
Mar 21, 2012
I have a class (using a class rather than a structure only because I can set a default field value for the fields I declare in the class) and I'm using a web service that returns information (demographic information) in JSON. I am using LINQ to get the values of each "entry" from the returned list and in that, I have to parse through and pull out the actual data that I want.Here's how I have it doing right now (just a start, there are 44 of them total, thus my question which will follow the code):
Dim returnedStats = From ljo As Linq.JObject In returnedObject.SelectToken("results")
'
'
For Each stat As Linq.JObject In returnedStats
[code]....

I have a user defined structure in a list that I am trying to change the value for in an individual element within the list of structures. Accessing the element is not a problem. However, the compiler complains
"Expression is a value and therefore cannot be the target of the assignment"when I try to update the value.For example:
Public Structure Person
Dim first as String
Dim last as String
Dim age as Integer
[code]....

Let say I have a function inside a class which require 4 parameter (table name,field name,field value, return field) When I use this function my form, such as
myclass.Search("customers", <-- after pressing the "," a popup list will be displayed that contain all the fields in "customers" table.

I have a stored procedure (I cannot edit) that I am calling via linq.
The stored procedure returns values (more complex but important data below):
Customer Stock Item Date Price Priority Qty
--------------------------------------------------------
CUST1 TAP 01-04-2012 £30 30 1 - 30
CUST1 TAP 05-04-2012 £33 30 1 - 30
CUST1 TAP 01-04-2012 £29 20 31 - 99
CUST1 TAP 01-04-2012 £28 10 1 - 30
I am trying to limit this list to rows which have unique Dates and unique quantities in LINQ. I want to remove items with the HIGHER priority leaving rows with unique dates and qty's.
I have tried several group by's using Max and order by's but have not been able to get a result.
Is there any way to do this via linq?
EDIT:
Managed to convert brad-rem's answer into VB.net.
Syntax below if anyone needs it:
returnlist = (From p In returnlist
Order By p.Qty Ascending, p.Priority
Group By AllGrp = p.Date, p.Qty Into g = Group
Select g.First).ToList

I'm currently refactoring an old Visual Basic DLL (VB.Net), which stores all of its data in one module called Globaldefinitions as public fields. There are about 200 fields, referenced thousands of times all around the code:
Public Module Globaldefinitons
Public a As Short
...
Public zz10 As Double
[Code]...
I need to change the module into a class with non-shared fields. This means, each and every of these thousands of references needs to reference the instance of that class:
globalDefinitionsInstance.a = 5
How do I go about this efficiently?
Regular expressions operating on the source fall flat. Refactoring tools like Re-Sharper or CodeRush don't seem to offer this functionality. Visual Studio 2010 cannot do it automatically either.

Class Foo
ReadOnly name As String
Public Sub New(name As String, dependentUpon As Foo)
Me.name = name
[code]....
The output of New Bar() is:
Dependent created. Dependent upon nothing.
Independent created. Dependent upon nothing.
It seems fields are initialized in the same order as they appear in the source code, which (a) leads to an unexpected result, and (b) seems a little puzzling, given that one is normally not permitted to read from uninitialized variables in .NET, yet that seems to be working fine above.I would've expected VB.NET to be smart enough to initialize referenced fields first, and only then those that reference it; i.e. I'd have liked to see this output instead:
Independent created. Dependent upon nothing.
Dependent created. Dependent upon Independent.
how to get VB.NET to behave like that instead, without simply having to swap the declaration order of dependent and independent inside class Bar?

I want to create a class that has a list of possible values that can be used.Example: when you create one like this: Dim a As ClassName = , a list will pop up in intellisense.or when the class is used as a property on a usercontrol, you can click the combobox and pick from the values.Here is what the value list looks like for the Color class: vs value selection.PNG

I'm new to VB 2008 after having spent a long time with VB6, so I apologize if this is a stupid question. But I'd really like to have this straightened out.
Let's say I have a pretty large structure that has lots of properties.
Code:
Now say that I want an internal database with about 10 instances of this structure total, describing, say, 10 different products that a store sells. When these values are loaded from a database, they remain totally static. (However, they can be different each time a program loads)
Now say that I have a class. Each instance of this class is a type of that BaseProduct structure. Meaning, each instance of the class pertains to one of the 10 types of products that the store sells. However, this class has additional properties that pertain specifically to each instance, which are not static.
Code:
Now, the problem here is... If I have 200 different transactions, each one contains an instance of BaseProduct. BaseProduct is HUGE, and is largely redundant (only 10 types possible), so I think it's a little silly to include a whole copy of it with EVERY transaction. However, the Transaction class really needs information regarding the base product it pertains to. Is there a way to, instead of declaring a New BaseProduct in the Transaction class, to simply make one of the properties of the Transaction class a pointer to a BaseProduct variable?
In VB6, I would accomplish this by making a BaseProduct(10) array, and then giving each Transaction an ID number referring to an entry in that array. But in VB 2008, using class structure, this is impossible. I can't define the BaseProduct(10) array outside of a class in a namespace, and if I define it in the actual application's form, then the class loses modularity since it relies on the application that's using it.

I am having a hard time trying to pass the values from a list inside of a class. I am trying to display multiple lines of values from a list inside of a class. My "client" class stores multiple lines of values into a list(of class transaction), with the number value (num) counting each transaction that it adds to the list.
Ex:
Public Class Client
Private m_tranlist As New List(Of transaction)
If CInt(tid) = m_ID Then 'create client tran, add to list
nextTran = New transaction(m_ID, tcode, tdate, ttype, tshares, tprice, value, num)
m_tranlist.Add(nextTran)
num += 1
End If
Now I am trying to display each line that is stored in the list in a label, and I am having major trouble. How do I call the list in my main form in order to display all of the values?

I have a class in VB with some constants that represent the string name of my security roles. I need to be able to call a function to return to me a string array(or collection, or whatever) of the values of each of these constants. I will be using it to make sure that my databases Roles table has the same roles as coded into the application.
[Code]...
I'm looking to run a function, i.e. ClassConstantsToStringArray(gettype(Roles)) that will return to me "Administrator","Basic User","Power User" I'm know reflection is the way to go, I just don't know enough about using it yet to get what I want. I found a function on the net that would return to me the constant names in a FieldInfo array but still don't have enough smarts to make that work for me.

Just suppose that I define a structure, and an array such as
Structure Person
Dim First_Name as String
Dim Last_Name as String
[code]....
Can I fill in my list of people using a single line of code for each record? Something like this, it doesn't work, but this shows the sort of thing I mean.
My_List(0) = {'John', 'Smith', 24, '555-1234'}
My_List(1) = {'George', 'Jones', 31, '555-8123'}
My_List(2) = {'Tom', 'Green', 40, '555-3434'}
It's easy enough to fill it in line by line. I could do that without problem. But I want to be able to look at the code and see the contents of each line. Doing it as above would make it easier to read.I could make it a multidimensional array of strings, rather than a structure.If it makes any difference I'm using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition.

I'm sure there are several ways of achieving my goal but I am after opinions on what you think is the best option. I'm writing a vb.net application which (amongst other thinks) interfaces with media players in the home. Because there are different types of media playersI'm trying to structure it so each type of media player has it's own class which interfaces to a management class which sits on top of all the different devices types.
The device classes are responsible for discovering the phsyical devices and returning that information up to the management class. A device class may be responsible for monitoring 1 or more physical devices so..

how i can implement below requirement using asp.net and vb.net.I have three fields in a form which are filled by users. Based on these three values, i need to auto-populate the 4th field.I have planned to implement this in the following way.Write a separate class file with a function to calculate the possible values for the 4th fields based on 1st 3 inputs. This function can return some where between 1-10 values. So I've decided to use drop-down for 4th field, and allow users to select the appropriate value.Call the above function in onchange function of 3rd field and take and use the return values to populate the 4th field. I'm planning to get the return values in array field.(Does this need a post back?)

I'm looking for a way to combine a field from multiple tables into a single field in a new table. Because the data populating the tables is coming from an outside source, I would prefer not to change the data in the original files. I have a separate table for each year because this is the way the data is provided. The field layout is not consistent from year to year, but each year there is a field that we'll call "score." I'd like to pull the field "score" from each year's table and have it populate a "score" column in a new table along with the year of the data so that all the years' scores are in the same place. Is there a way to do this using Visual Basic + Access?

Currently, if I have different classes containing functions etc, I would structure them all in the 1 VB file titled whatever the main Class is. For example:
[Code]...
However, the problem with this is the file can become 1000s of lines long making hard to find portions of code. Is there a way I can store SubClass in a file such as MainClass.SubClass.vb so that its easier to locate classes? Or is there a better, more standard, way of doing this?

In a recent project I was working I created a structure in my class to solve a problem I was having, as a colleague was looking over my shoulder he looked derisively at the structure and said "move it into a class". I didn't have any argument for not moving it into a class other than I only need it in this class but this kind of falls down because couldn't I make it a nested class?
