I just found this amazing DLL that can extract the hardware ID (computer RAM, hard drive unique serial number, partition serial number, CPU unique serial number, etc) of a computer.
However, there is no documentation for VB users and it is written in Pascal and assembly language. Ya, sad

I could have rectified this if I new how to build applications that could be updated whenever I make changes.

I wrote this sub routine that is running, but it only returns the local Computer name and Serial number. Any one know the why to grab the Computer name and serial by IP address? I am using VB 2010.

View 4 RepliesSomething ive wondered about as long as ive had an interest in making apps is generating serial numbers for software projects.Im wondering how is this done by the pro's so that someone can put a key into an app and without being connected to the net it knows the key is valid by using an algorythm.Id like to make something like that for the sake of learning how. I realise more and more programs now "call home" at the point of entering a key or to "activate" as with MS office and windows etc, but id like to start at the old school way of doing it.Generating the alpha numeric keys and also checking them.
View 10 RepliesI am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)

Unique constraint - these columns currently doesn't have unique values..?? I have created Unique Constraint with 3 columns. My code works perfectly but once - two users @ same time entered same data and somehow it saved in DB; after that incident. This UniqueConstraint gives me error - These columns currently doesn't have unique values. How can I check if user enters this kind of entry or how can I restrict the Entry?

I made my program and now I just need to add in the serial and trial part of the application. I know the application must connect to the host and go to a txtfile. How would i do the trial and serial. Also If the serial is already activated I want the application to reject that Serial and Count how many times they entered in a wrong serial.
View 2 RepliesI have a stand alone VB.Net 2005 application that uses a serial port that generally stays open while the application runs on a Windows XP system. In trying to bullet-proof the UI, I ran into a problem when the USB to Serial Converter normally used to provide the serial port is disconnected while the serial port is open. In trying to handle the resulting error when accessing the port, I find I cannot close the port.
When trying to do so, the error message says something like "unable to close the port. You may not have sufficient permissions." Reconnecting the USB/Serial Converter does not reactivate the port.

So how would I use .next (random numbers) to randomly select something from a list of numbers but it can't repeat the number?I could do:

View 2 RepliesI am making a program, where the user enters 6 numbers in 6 different text boxes, and it displays the larger of those 6 numbers. But I also want to make it where if the user enters a string value (like S for instance) in the text boxes, it gives an message and says "please enter the numbers again" and the user gets to enter the 6 numbers again. But when I do try to do that, it gives an error message saying conversion from "w/e the user entered" to Double is not valid. If the user just enters the numbers, it works fine. However, I am trying to make it if the user does enter non numeric value, it gives a message window and the user can reenter the numbers again.

This is where I am trying to use IsNumeric to show a message if a user does not enter a string so the user can renter the numbers again, but when the user does enter a string value (say in textbox 1) it gives me an error message saying conversion from "S" to 'double' is not valid.

Then right here this is where I have my series of ifs statements, this part works fine, it displays the largest numbers of the 6 textboxes every time. Error free.

I know there are easier ways to do these with arrays and stuff. But I am not there yet. I am still learning about ifs and stuff.
