HTTPWebRequest Speed Is Slow Comparing Python URLOpen
Feb 12, 2011
I am coding a web-crawler which will crawl the websites and selectively parse different sections of a web site.I am a .Net developer so the choice was obvious that I did it in .Net but the speed was very slow which included downloading and parsing of HTMLPages..Then I tried to just download the contents first using .Net and then same domains using python but the python was very impressive in downloading data. I have achieved downloading using python but the later part is not that easy to code in python, which obviously i don't want to do.The same batch of domain which took 100 seconds in Python was taking 20 minutes in .Net based crawler..I tried url... to download and in took 8 seconds in Python and same was taking 100 Seconds in .Net crawler..Does anyone anyone have any idea why this is slow in .Net but fast in python?

I just did a little test, comparing speed between a function and the same thing but using a byref value instead.
Public Sub New()
Dim timespanFunction As TimeSpan
Dim timespanByRef As TimeSpan[code]....
So using byref is more then a second quicker in this case. So why does function actually exist? Is it just to make programming more easy and your code look nicer? The most important things of a application are Usability and Speed right? So why trade speed for nicer looking code?

how to speed up or slow down a process.
I found out that I should use timegettime, gettickcount, queryperformancecounter.
I have found some info here: h[URL]
I've gotten to the part where I copy and paste the whole code. But, I want to only change the speed of a process.

I'm asking this question here, in this forum, as I couldn't find MSDN Managed forum for Crystal Reports. And the previously asked questions are unanswered. I've developed an application using VB.NET and Crystal Reports in VS2008. The report generated gets printed correctly on modern laser or inkjet printers. However, the entire formatting gets affected when I print these reports on dot matrix printer. Apart from that. the print speed is very slow. I tried exporting the report to PDF, XLS, DOC and other formats - but no solution. There was Export to Text function, which is not working in Crystal Reports now.

My program draws a few hundred labels and depending on certain criteria, they may be visible or not. I figured that it would be pretty slow anyway, but even if there's only a few labels visible, it does a weird flicky thing for a few seconds before drawing them - at the same speed if there are a lot visible.

For some reason, .NET applications that I've written seem to have issues if they're launched when Windows starts (by being in the Startup folder for instance). An application that can finish in 3/10 of a second if one launches it normally may seriously take 45-90 seconds to finish if it was launched when Windows loads. Even if I just manually wait 30 seconds after login and launch the program, it'll complete virtually instantly while a copy launched at startup is still struggling along, so it isn't just that Windows is still loading...this continues AFTER that finishes and all HDD activity stops.Writing something to disk using an IO.anything goes at about 20KB/s during this event.

I am trying to create a program in Visual Basic which will measure the performance of the CPU with every core, one at a time. In this program, I decided to place a couple of text boxes that display the processor speed and the actual processor speed. I need to get the actual processor speed to update and I have tried doing this already using a timer set to tick every second. However, when I load the program it runs really slowly and prevents me form doing anything within the program, including trying to close it down, and all it does is updates the text box every second. I have looked in task manager to find out how much CPU the program is using and it shows that my program is using 0 - 3% CPU.
Here is the code currently use
Private Sub Timer3_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Timer3.Tick
Dim mSearcher As New ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT * FROM Win32_Processor")

I have always wondered about this and seen this among lots of programmers. Why is a VB programmer or VB code easily dismissed as too noobish and easy while the same does not apply to Python or Python code? After all, isn't Python as easy as VB is? And it does provide drag-n-drop GUI application building also. So why is it that VB is flamed and yet Python is not?

I have an interesting issue I've run into where I can easily tap into python code from VB in an excel instance, as described here: Calling python script from excel/vba.However, when I mimic the exact same code structure in visual studio in a form, the pyscript.language = "python" line fails. Does anyone know if MSScriptControl.ScriptControl can be used in VB .Net to control python like you can in excel? This would be a lot easier than setting up a com object for my python scripts.
Example code (need to add microsoft script control 1.0 and excel object library):

I'm writing a python plugin for a geo referencing program called QGIS where I want an Excel sheet to do all my calculations for me. For different data points I need to set certain input values into the spreadsheet (which was already written by someone else). I'm fine setting the int values (using win32com.client) with
sheet.Cells(row, col).Value = value
For radio buttons I would expect it to work like so:
sheet.opt_name.Value = True
But I get the error message:
AttributeError: '<win32com.gen_py.Microsoft Excel 12.0 Object Library._Worksheet instance at 0x232878608>' object has no attribute 'opt_name'
What are the options attributes of? How do I set their values?

It is possible to do this in Visual Basic with .DLL classes?

I never thought I'd say this, but I am getting pissed at how easy it is to just plop down a variable in python without any declaration. I have an existing python script which interfaces with a server, and it builds its own messages to be communicated via sockets. What I am trying to do is take the command line python script and convert it into a VB GUI app that is more user friendly.
