How To Capture Form Events From A Separate Running Process
Mar 21, 2011
I'm trying to automate a product that provides no such automation capability.I've take a cursory look at loading the app in a separate AppDomain, and also, through reflection, executing the Program.Main() to get the app running. I also tried getting the windowhandle from a separately created Process object (which I've learned will not work). If I have a reference to their assembly added to my project so I can reference an instance of "TheirProduct.FormMain", what, if it's possible, is the best way to go about capturing events from that form? What I need to do is to be able to capture a couple events, and perform a few Button.PerformClick() against the form.

I have VB.NET application in which one of the form has IE control in it, the application starts initially with memory size consumed around 9 MBs, but when IE form is launched, the memory consumed rises to 27 MB, and when that form is closed, the memory reduces merely by 3-4 MBs, so why memory allocated to IEFrame is not de-allocated automatically?

I am trying to write a Windows Script that will allow me to monitor the following: That 2 x seperate but specific processes within Component Services "Running Processes" list are currently running and have not reset within the past hour. If I already know the PID, then I can retrieve the CreationDate (I assume which I can use to check for restarts? or is this the actual process creation/installation date) for each specific process, however if a restart occurs the PID will change and my script needs to know what the new PID is without me telling it!

I have created a porcess that manipulates large volumes of text. I have created a form that has a button that manually starts the process. I have tried to give some feedback that the process is actually progressing through the data by changing the value of text fields on the form. However the text fields do not update on the form until after the process is complete. I had this working in another program but cannot figure out what I am doing different.I use the following code to change the text.[code]

What I'm trying to do is show a form while a background process is running. Similar to a progress bar but not a progress bar. We have a form that has an animated gif (customer request) and that's it. no other controls. They want this form to show while the processing in the background is running.

I have a few forms that have a lot of really intensive updating along with a great deal of user interface (text boxes, button clicking etc) Is it possible to open a separate form as a separate UI thread from the start up form that called it to "show" or open or whatever the new method might be?

I'm developing Applications in VB.NET 2008.
I have MDI Parent Form and i'm going load all form as MDI child. Here i'm going to give option to "Close All" toolstripbutton in top of MDI Parent to close All mdi child forms.
Now i would like to check that On click of Close All Toolstripbutton , i have to close all mdi child form but except those form is on process, example, I have opened/Loaded 5 MDI child forms within MDI Parent Form.
Child forms are ( just for example ) ,
1. Customer details Form
2. Item Details Form
3. Import Orders Form
4. Stock Details Form
5. Production Entry Form
Here 3.Import Orders form is importing from Excel with 5000 records and 4. Stock details form exporting to excel.
So now if i click "Close All" button then i have close only Idle form i.e 1,2 and 5 but i should not close 3 and 4 since its on some process.
So Is there any .NET option to check that form in process/idle or do I have to check manually by having any Flags ?

I just happened to be reading through a post and stumbled upon this and was curious. As I was remiss to go off topic in someone else's post, I've dragged it out here. What we are doing here is logically incorrect. We loop thru all the records and set the sheet locked state and button image. But since the button is just one element, so effectively the image set would be that of the last record. We need to separate the two procedures and the events they take effect too.Ideally we should set the sheet locked state while loading it. (maybe the form_load event etc.). And we should set the button image when we switch the sheets (e.g. sheet change/activate events). The selection of events however depends on your requirements and wisdom.

I noticed how the image was accessed above. My question is this, what is the differences between the above method and Image = Image.FromFile(Path) and if any, what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? This is just for knowledge purpose and is not pertaining to any particular problem.

I've written an app with a simple textbox which attempts to identify a user from their typing habits (interval between key presses, duration key is held, time between key strokes ie a->s is quicker than a->v for some users, shorter for others depending on typing style). It's far from perfect but it does correctly identify moderate-large differences in style.I'm hoping to use this as a form of security monitor - If the typing style of the user doesn't fit a recognised pattern, report to a central server.
Of course, the next step in testing this is to begin to capture "regular" typing habits - ie when browsing, switching between apps, etc. What I can't figure out how to do is capture keyboard input for all applications (excluding the login/welcome screen, alternate desktops, etc. - I have no reason to parse that and there's probably not enough input to analyse anyway)Disclaimer: Yes, I know this comes dangerously close to writing a keylogger which is verboten but if I wanted to do that, I'd write a keyboard driver in C++ - I'm sure it would be far more streamlined and easier to obfuscate than a hulking .Net MSIL assembly. I have no doubt I'll be fending off "That's a keylogger" comments but I've hit a wall and need to ask somewhere.

I've got a simple tool written in VB in VS 2010 that has a series of command buttons which run Windows command files and the output is sent to a Rich textbox object on the main form (the comand files take awhile to run so I wanted the output to show up in the RTB as it was produced to show progress). All worked well until I made an update to the tool so that the series of buttons are no longer hard-coded, but created dynamically from information in the app.config file. To do this, I use a button

I'm writing a Windows Forms app that uses a DataGridView control. I have row select enabled on the control. I would like to trap the DoubleClick event, but it doesn't seem to fire reliably - I often have to double-click on a row 2 or 3 times before the event is triggered. Could anyone point me to a way to capture this more reliably?

I build a class library (dll) with a form in it. Now i start the dll : Dim myDLL As New ClassLibrary1.MyFirstDLL(). The problem is that this dll starts but not as a separate proces i also dont see it in the taskmanager. what i see is that when i start the dll from my program, my program start using more cpu/memory. The whole idea behind a dll is that it dont consume memory of the process that calls it. So how can i start the dll as a new separate proces but still be able to send variables to this dll. (i also created a whole new proces but then i can not send variables to it)

I am trying to find a way to capture keyboard events with the intent of preventing users from being able to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del while my application is running. I've spent several hours poking around looking for inspiration but only finding unclear and half-baked examples. As such, I was thrilled to stumble across the article: Managing Low-Level Keyboard Hooks in VB .NET written by Paul Kimmel [URL] This article is insightful, comprehensive, well-written, and I thought it was a huge help. One little problem though, the code that was provided did not work, (I knew it was too good to be true!).
Now, Mr. Kimmel seemed very knowledgable and I think that he probably tested his code, so quite likely the problem is something that I'm doing wrong seeing as I am a newbie. As the article suggests I cut and pasted his code into a module in my project (solution I guess is the proper term), and I call the HookKeyboard method from a button on a form, and Presto! Nothing happens. Stepping through this code I see that the second line in HookKeyboard:

I've made an application which goes through a long procedure when a button is clicked. I don't want the user to think the program has frozen, so I'd like to add a marquee progress bar just to show that it's still running. However, if I simply add the progress bar and make it visible when the button is clicked, the bar will appear but freeze and wait for the procedure to finish before it starts scrolling.
I know this is due to both the procedure and the progress bar running on the same thread, but the tutorials I've seen on getting a process to run on another thread seem confusing. What is the simple way to make a progress bar run on a separate thread?

when trying to run a function in a separate thread, my reason for trying this is because since the application is only run on one thread, the GUI hangs when the function is called.[code]In this code, the Print screen Button is pressed and the function HookCallBack is called. The problem is that the function has variables that need to be passed and returned, and while searching, i found a website that had an answer for this, and it required the function to be put in a class, and then it could be run on a separate thread while still passing all the variables needed.url...But the code cannot be placed in a class without giving errors and it seems to me like i did something wrong. The code is meant to be used in a form and not a class. My question is, how would i go about running the HookCallBack Function in a Separate thread?

I want to have three classes running three simoultaineous threads. I have started out with one class that looks like this:
Imports System.ThreadingPublic Class C_EventCollector Dim oThread As Thread Public Sub New() oThread = New Thread(AddressOf Me.BackgroundProcess) End Sub Private Sub BackgroundProcess() Console.WriteLine(Now.ToString) oThread.Sleep(10000) End SubEnd Class
What I want is execute BackgroundProcess() every tenth second. For testing purpose I print out current date and time to the console. Using this thread BackgroundProcess() only executes once.
