I am trying to capture keyboard events in my vb.net applications. I am able to capture all the single key events. I am not able to capture (<) key which is (shift + ,) and (>) key which is (shift + .).
View 1 RepliesI've written an app with a simple textbox which attempts to identify a user from their typing habits (interval between key presses, duration key is held, time between key strokes ie a->s is quicker than a->v for some users, shorter for others depending on typing style). It's far from perfect but it does correctly identify moderate-large differences in style.I'm hoping to use this as a form of security monitor - If the typing style of the user doesn't fit a recognised pattern, report to a central server.
Of course, the next step in testing this is to begin to capture "regular" typing habits - ie when browsing, switching between apps, etc.What I can't figure out how to do is capture keyboard input for all applications (excluding the login/welcome screen, alternate desktops, etc. - I have no reason to parse that and there's probably not enough input to analyse anyway)Disclaimer: Yes, I know this comes dangerously close to writing a keylogger which is verboten but if I wanted to do that, I'd write a keyboard driver in C++ - I'm sure it would be far more streamlined and easier to obfuscate than a hulking .Net MSIL assembly. I am trying to find a way to capture keyboard events with the intent of preventing users from being able to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del while my application is running. I've spent several hours poking around looking for inspiration but only finding unclear and half-baked examples. As such, I was thrilled to stumble across the article: Managing Low-Level Keyboard Hooks in VB .NET written by Paul Kimmel [URL] This article is insightful, comprehensive, well-written, and I thought it was a huge help. One little problem though, the code that was provided did not work, (I knew it was too good to be true!).
Now, Mr. Kimmel seemed very knowledgable and I think that he probably tested his code, so quite likely the problem is something that I'm doing wrong seeing as I am a newbie. As the article suggests I cut and pasted his code into a module in my project (solution I guess is the proper term), and I call the HookKeyboard method from a button on a form, and Presto! I was a professional software designer using VB6. Now that I've converted to VB2005 years later, use, with pages of unrelated information. With VB6 I could use Left$, Mid$, etc to parse keyboard input into a string. For example in the KeyPress event of a name box I could use

When converting a program from VB6 to VB2005 the software changed the line to

With my Application (vb.net) I am trying to scan Excel files some of which have ActiveX Components.
When running my Application, I am getting a pup-up window in Windows Vista Environment with Office-2007 having button OK and Cancel button to proceed.
But my problem is the scanning is not proceeding even after I keep on pressing the OK button. Now I want to continue with my application while pressing the Cancel button; i.e. just to skip the file. Is it possible to capture the response from the cancel button? (As this is a message box from another application, i.e. either from Vista or Office-2007, I'm not sure).

View 2 RepliesHow do I bind a keyboard key to an event? Everything I have found so far is related to using the keyboard for shortcuts to buttons on the form. I guess you could say I want to do the opposite.
For example: This is just basic code I did while learning how to use the xBox controller with my windows forms.

Instead of changing the text in my textbox I want to have the left shoulder button or maybe my Dpad act as the "Tab" (let me worry about the controller I've got that handled, as not not confuse anyone) key on the keyboard in order to navigate through my form by tabbing upward or downward through a menu. Then maybe use the "A" button on the controller as the "Enter" key.
Where in: Replacing "tbLB.Text = " Pressed"" with code that would press virtually press the "TAB" key.
Of course using the xBox controller is dealing with XNA, but at this point I have figured out some basics of using the controller with my forms, just need to know how to mimic the keyboard keys.

And whenever I click control-b (on keyboard) it inserts the bold tag twice.why does it do that? i use to have that code in a button, and the keyboard event would lead to button1.performclick but now when putting the button code in the keyboard it adds the tags twice
I'm using a textbox to define a hotkey, and I need to make the textbox receive key events and prevent the form from receiving them.The reason it's a problem is because Tab (and probably other keys) is a valid key, but the form uses that as a shortcut, so the textbox never receives the keypress.

The code also stores this recorded event in the file and opens the file for playing. The mouse movements are playing fine but none of the mouse clicks or keyboard keypresses are playing fine. I would like to trap the DoubleClick event, but it doesn't seem to fire reliably - I often have to double-click on a row 2 or 3 times before the event is triggered. Ok, so I'm writing a basic windows form application in VB.net as you do and need to be able to raise keyboard events based on data received from the serial port. I'm able to receive the characters that I want (lets say a lower case c) and display them. Its also easy enough for me to find the keycode. What I want to do though is tell windows that key "c" has been pressed. The application is paired to a bluetooth terminal, I wanted to have the experience of writing the code behind this myself rather than using another library although it seems I've failed already. How would I go about doing this?
View 1 RepliesI am hoping there is a way to do this.I have a base class that has event handling in it. My console application is running my workflow. Part of that workflow is to raise events at specific intervals in a separate thread to broadcast the workers' current state (a heartbeat I have heard many call it).
I also have another program in the same solution that is a windows form that I want it to be able to listen to what is going on in the console application so that it can display the worker states. I have tried running both at the same time and verified the events are triggering, but the monitor is not finding any of the raised events.
I am fearing that there is no way to do this, and I will need to go to a database logging method or something else... but in the off chance someone knew how to communicate between applications with event (or event-style) logic, I would appreciate it.Currently the applications are running from the same location. The goal is that the monitor application will eventually be attached with a broadcaster for our network so that our workstations can monitor for certain worker states without being logged into the machine and the main monitor will show us the full status of all the workers.

I also tried getting the windowhandle from a separately created Process object (which I've learned will not work).If I have a reference to their assembly added to my project so I can reference an instance of "TheirProduct.FormMain", what, if it's possible, is the best way to go about capturing events from that form? I have created a virtual keyboard like the "Windows onscreen keyboard". So, I have used the method sendkeys.But if I click on the button, it doesn't write nothing.

So I am hacking together an app which listens to traffic using SharpPcap library, it reconstructs the packets from sessions using the code from TpcRcon.
Listening and reconstructing part work on their own . What I want is on each packet arrival main window gets an event so it can display the packet , and when session is reconstructed display a complete packet (I am interested in HTTP ones) . -That is where it breaks with weird symptoms: for example right now it does not stop on invoking stop listening method - the sharppcap library function hangs there forever waiting on this line of code : m_pcapThreadEvent.WaitOne();//wait for the 'stopped' signal from thread
I also had it not working and crashing in sharppcap function because I had omitted one parameter in form delegate- which makes no sense, because form delegate does not deal with packet capture at all and only reacts on "New Packet" event from my "Listener" class (which is only there to notify main form)

registered as friend with event and handles even "New Packet"
