Raise Keyboard Events To Windows From Form Application

Jun 21, 2012

Ok, so I'm writing a basic windows form application in VB.net as you do and need to be able to raise keyboard events based on data received from the serial port. I'm able to receive the characters that I want (lets say a lower case c) and display them. Its also easy enough for me to find the keycode. What I want to do though is tell windows that key "c" has been pressed. The application is paired to a bluetooth terminal, I wanted to have the experience of writing the code behind this myself rather than using another library although it seems I've failed already. How would I go about doing this?

Two Objects That Are Raising Some Events - Pressing A Button - Raise A Custom Event, Then Execute A Method And Then Close The Form

Mar 30, 2011

Problem that you may have when dealing with two objects that are raising some events. Here, to make it obvious, I am closing the form, but the problem can be experienced with any other 2 classes event. First, what is the problem !

Let suppose that by pressing a button, you want to raise a custom event, then execute a method and then close the form

In that case, you may use a code similar to this

Event BeepIt()

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
RaiseEvent BeepIt()

Application-level KeyUp/KeyDown Events (not Windows Form-level)?

I am creating an Excel add-in written in VB.NET. I would like to bind KeyDown and KeyUp events to the spreadsheet to record when the user presses and releases the arrow keys while navigating the spreadsheetIdeally, these events would be built into Excel alongside the native SheetActivate and SheetSelectionChange events, for example. Alas, they are not.

C# - .NET Events Special Methods (add/remove/raise/other)?

Dec 24, 2010

I was wondering about the EventInfo.GetRaiseMethod and EventInfo.GetOtherMethods methods. Apparently, the CLR supports 4 kinds of methods associated with events: add, remove, raise, and "others". But events created in C# only have add and remove... I assumed that raise was used in VB, since you have to specify a RaiseEvent method when you declare a custom event, but apparently it's not the case: GetRaiseMethod always returns null.what's the point in having a raise method associated with an event if it's never used? Is there a specific MSIL instruction to raise an event using this method? (I couln't find anything like it in the opcodes)what are the "other" methods returned (well, not returned actually) by GetOtherMethods? What's are they supposed to do?are there types in the BCL that implement those special methods?

Delegates - .net Possible To Monitor Raise Events Across Applications?

Oct 1, 2009

I am hoping there is a way to do this.I have a base class that has event handling in it. My console application is running my workflow. Part of that workflow is to raise events at specific intervals in a separate thread to broadcast the workers' current state (a heartbeat I have heard many call it).

I also have another program in the same solution that is a windows form that I want it to be able to listen to what is going on in the console application so that it can display the worker states. I have tried running both at the same time and verified the events are triggering, but the monitor is not finding any of the raised events.

I am fearing that there is no way to do this, and I will need to go to a database logging method or something else... but in the off chance someone knew how to communicate between applications with event (or event-style) logic, I would appreciate it.Currently the applications are running from the same location. The goal is that the monitor application will eventually be attached with a broadcaster for our network so that our workstations can monitor for certain worker states without being logged into the machine and the main monitor will show us the full status of all the workers.

.net - EF Navigation Properties Don't Raise OnPropertyChanging And OnPropertyChanged Events?

Apr 25, 2011

EF Navigation properties don't raise OnPropertyChanging and OnPropertyChanged Events.When looking into the entity framework auto-generated code a simple property will have a setter that looks like this:

Set
OnNameChanging(value)
ReportPropertyChanging("Name")[code]......

Seems like the navigation properties should call just call the 4 change notification methods. Do you have any insights on why the EF generater would be implemented in this manner? Is there an option somewhere to turn on notification or a work-around? Also, I assume that editing the designer generated code is bad practice, correct?

Raise Events - Generic Function For Sorting Integer Arrays

Aug 26, 2010

I am very confuse over a Raise Events example and using delegate as a function pointer: I am clear with this function pointer example program below which creates a generic sort function for sorting integer arrays without changing the main sort function.
' Returns True if need to swap
Delegate Function CompareFunc(ByVal x As Integer, _
ByVal y As Integer) _
As Boolean

Here are two alternative target methods for the delegate - one for an ascending sort and one for a descending sort:
Function SortAscending(ByVal x As Integer, ByVal y As Integer) As Boolean
If y < x Then
SortAscending = True
End If
End Function
Function SortDescending(ByVal x As Integer, _
ByVal y As Integer) As Boolean

SerialPort Events Won't Fire On Windows Server 2008 Using .NET 2.0 Application

Jul 9, 2010

I have a program that reads data from a scanner via the serial port.This program works fine on Windows XP.We have a terminal server set up running Windows Server 2008.I run HyperTerminal on our test terminal, it connects and reads the scanner data fine through COM1.I run my app on that same test terminal and get nothing when I scan.My app connects to COM1 without errors and disconnects without errors.BUT, the DataRecieved event is NEVER getting fired.Neither is the ErrorReceived event.I have played with the Handshaking, with the RecievedBytesThreshhold and pretty much every setup setting I found.Set it up exactly like the settings on Hyperterminal.I have even tried starting a timer on a different thread to call ReadByte every second to try to KICK this thing into doing SOMETHING.Nothing has worked.

I have been trying to fix this for an entire day now.Added events to my class trying to see EVERYTHING that is going on. All I know is, it connects to the port and it disconnects from the port correctly but nothing happens in between.No data when I scan.No event fired at all between connecting to and disconnecting from the port.I have also downloaded other's simple serial communications applications.Nothing in .NET works.[code]

Capture All Keyboard Events?

Aug 9, 2010

I've written an app with a simple textbox which attempts to identify a user from their typing habits (interval between key presses, duration key is held, time between key strokes ie a->s is quicker than a->v for some users, shorter for others depending on typing style). It's far from perfect but it does correctly identify moderate-large differences in style.I'm hoping to use this as a form of security monitor - If the typing style of the user doesn't fit a recognised pattern, report to a central server.

Of course, the next step in testing this is to begin to capture "regular" typing habits - ie when browsing, switching between apps, etc.What I can't figure out how to do is capture keyboard input for all applications (excluding the login/welcome screen, alternate desktops, etc. - I have no reason to parse that and there's probably not enough input to analyse anyway)Disclaimer: Yes, I know this comes dangerously close to writing a keylogger which is verboten but if I wanted to do that, I'd write a keyboard driver in C++ - I'm sure it would be far more streamlined and easier to obfuscate than a hulking .Net MSIL assembly. I have no doubt I'll be fending off "That's a keylogger" comments but I've hit a wall and need to ask somewhere.

Bind Keyboard Keys To Events?

Mar 30, 2012

How do I bind a keyboard key to an event? Everything I have found so far is related to using the keyboard for shortcuts to buttons on the form. I guess you could say I want to do the opposite.

For example: This is just basic code I did while learning how to use the xBox controller with my windows forms.

If currentState.Buttons.LeftShoulder = ButtonState.Pressed Then
tbLB.Text = " Pressed"
Else
tbLB.Text = " Released"
End If

Instead of changing the text in my textbox I want to have the left shoulder button or maybe my Dpad act as the "Tab" (let me worry about the controller I've got that handled, as not not confuse anyone) key on the keyboard in order to navigate through my form by tabbing upward or downward through a menu. Then maybe use the "A" button on the controller as the "Enter" key.

Where in: Replacing "tbLB.Text = " Pressed"" with code that would press virtually press the "TAB" key.

Of course using the xBox controller is dealing with XNA, but at this point I have figured out some basics of using the controller with my forms, just need to know how to mimic the keyboard keys.

Capture Keyboard Events With The Intent Of Preventing Users From Being Able To Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del

Jun 28, 2005

I am trying to find a way to capture keyboard events with the intent of preventing users from being able to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del while my application is running. I've spent several hours poking around looking for inspiration but only finding unclear and half-baked examples. As such, I was thrilled to stumble across the article: Managing Low-Level Keyboard Hooks in VB .NET written by Paul Kimmel [URL] This article is insightful, comprehensive, well-written, and I thought it was a huge help. One little problem though, the code that was provided did not work, (I knew it was too good to be true!).

Now, Mr. Kimmel seemed very knowledgable and I think that he probably tested his code, so quite likely the problem is something that I'm doing wrong seeing as I am a newbie. As the article suggests I cut and pasted his code into a module in my project (solution I guess is the proper term), and I call the HookKeyboard method from a button on a form, and Presto! Nothing happens. Stepping through this code I see that the second line in HookKeyboard:
