Capture Keyboard Events With The Intent Of Preventing Users From Being Able To Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del

Jun 28, 2005

I am trying to find a way to capture keyboard events with the intent of preventing users from being able to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del while my application is running. I've spent several hours poking around looking for inspiration but only finding unclear and half-baked examples. As such, I was thrilled to stumble across the article: Managing Low-Level Keyboard Hooks in VB .NET written by Paul Kimmel [URL] This article is insightful, comprehensive, well-written, and I thought it was a huge help. One little problem though, the code that was provided did not work, (I knew it was too good to be true!).

Now, Mr. Kimmel seemed very knowledgable and I think that he probably tested his code, so quite likely the problem is something that I'm doing wrong seeing as I am a newbie. As the article suggests I cut and pasted his code into a module in my project (solution I guess is the proper term), and I call the HookKeyboard method from a button on a form, and Presto! Nothing happens. Stepping through this code I see that the second line in HookKeyboard:

Capture All Keyboard Events?

Aug 9, 2010

I've written an app with a simple textbox which attempts to identify a user from their typing habits (interval between key presses, duration key is held, time between key strokes ie a->s is quicker than a->v for some users, shorter for others depending on typing style). It's far from perfect but it does correctly identify moderate-large differences in style.I'm hoping to use this as a form of security monitor - If the typing style of the user doesn't fit a recognised pattern, report to a central server.

Of course, the next step in testing this is to begin to capture "regular" typing habits - ie when browsing, switching between apps, etc.What I can't figure out how to do is capture keyboard input for all applications (excluding the login/welcome screen, alternate desktops, etc. - I have no reason to parse that and there's probably not enough input to analyse anyway)Disclaimer: Yes, I know this comes dangerously close to writing a keylogger which is verboten but if I wanted to do that, I'd write a keyboard driver in C++ - I'm sure it would be far more streamlined and easier to obfuscate than a hulking .Net MSIL assembly. I have no doubt I'll be fending off "That's a keylogger" comments but I've hit a wall and need to ask somewhere.

Capture Keyboard Input With Text Boxes?

Jul 13, 2011

I was a professional software designer using VB6. Now that I've converted to VB2005 years later, use, with pages of unrelated information. With VB6 I could use Left$, Mid$, etc to parse keyboard input into a string. For example in the KeyPress event of a name box I could use

Case "A" To "Z"
CFName$ = Left$(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelStart) + Key$ + Mid$(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelStart + CFNameBox.SelLength + 1)

When converting a program from VB6 to VB2005 the software changed the line to

CFName = VB.Left(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelectionStart) & Key & Mid(CFNameBox.Text, CFNameBox.SelectionStart + CFNameBox.SelectionLength + 1)

When writing another program I used the VB.Left(), etc, but it gives me an error. So, the question is, what is the correct way to capture keyboard input from text boxes and construct strings?

Bind Keyboard Keys To Events?

Mar 30, 2012

How do I bind a keyboard key to an event? Everything I have found so far is related to using the keyboard for shortcuts to buttons on the form. I guess you could say I want to do the opposite.

For example: This is just basic code I did while learning how to use the xBox controller with my windows forms.

If currentState.Buttons.LeftShoulder = ButtonState.Pressed Then
tbLB.Text = " Pressed"
Else
tbLB.Text = " Released"
End If

Instead of changing the text in my textbox I want to have the left shoulder button or maybe my Dpad act as the "Tab" (let me worry about the controller I've got that handled, as not not confuse anyone) key on the keyboard in order to navigate through my form by tabbing upward or downward through a menu. Then maybe use the "A" button on the controller as the "Enter" key.

Where in: Replacing "tbLB.Text = " Pressed"" with code that would press virtually press the "TAB" key.

Of course using the xBox controller is dealing with XNA, but at this point I have figured out some basics of using the controller with my forms, just need to know how to mimic the keyboard keys.

Textbox Hook Keyboard Events?

Jan 23, 2010

I'm using a textbox to define a hotkey, and I need to make the textbox receive key events and prevent the form from receiving them.The reason it's a problem is because Tab (and probably other keys) is a valid key, but the form uses that as a shortcut, so the textbox never receives the keypress.

Raise Keyboard Events To Windows From Form Application

Jun 21, 2012

Ok, so I'm writing a basic windows form application in VB.net as you do and need to be able to raise keyboard events based on data received from the serial port. I'm able to receive the characters that I want (lets say a lower case c) and display them. Its also easy enough for me to find the keycode. What I want to do though is tell windows that key "c" has been pressed. The application is paired to a bluetooth terminal, I wanted to have the experience of writing the code behind this myself rather than using another library although it seems I've failed already. How would I go about doing this?

How To Capture Form Events From A Separate Running Process

Mar 21, 2011

I'm trying to automate a product that provides no such automation capability.I've take a cursory look at loading the app in a separate AppDomain, and also, through reflection, executing the Program.Main() to get the app running. I also tried getting the windowhandle from a separately created Process object (which I've learned will not work).If I have a reference to their assembly added to my project so I can reference an instance of "TheirProduct.FormMain", what, if it's possible, is the best way to go about capturing events from that form? What I need to do is to be able to capture a couple events, and perform a few Button.PerformClick() against the form.

Let Users Use A Month Calander To Add Upcoming Events?

Jun 26, 2011

I'm working on a Personal Assistant program that acts as a electronic scrapbook/excercise book/encyclopedia/diary for my college studies. This is programmed in Visual Basic 2010 This program has a form where it connects to a server to check for updates, sometimes the URL can change giving the program an error, crashing it. In the preferences menu, I want to see people able to manually find the web page for the download by using the 'WebBrowser' tool, but when someone is on say [url] and they clicked Set URL... the button. How would I make a label have the same text as the current viewing URL address?

Also somehow similar, if people are to lose/move the text file that contains the version number, this throws Visual Basic off. I want users able to click browse and find the location of this text file if they still have it and set the address for example ("C:UsersJoshDocumentsversion.txt) to tell Visual Basic that's the new location. How would this be achieved? New problem: I let my users use a month calander to add upcoming events/ home work, this is to make the program notify them about certain events when they open the program again. Now what I need to do is have the label when a button is clicked, hold the value of the picked day, one that holds the value of the month, one that holds the value of the current date and so forth. How would I do this?

Web Cam Program - Designed With Malicious Intent?

I haven't downloaded this .dll or found a location to download it. Am I correct in assuming this program was designed with malicious intent?

Writing Binary To File With Intent Of Unreadability

May 25, 2011

I am working on a program that creates a "license" file. This file is expected to be binary, containing a name, today's date, a warning date, an expiration date, and a preference of Metric or Imperial units of measurement, and essentially authorizes programs to work until the expiration date is reached, before which the warning date notifies the user that the license will expire.For this functionality to be fully utilized, the dates must not be able to be easily edited so as to prevent people from setting the date to whatever they want and keeping the program. What I have now writes each field from a String or Integer into whatever the BinaryWriter class deems should be written when I use its "write" method.I have been experimenting with the difference between Big and Little Endian encoding, which is selectable in the form.

If the entered name has no spaces, the file looks a bit unreadable, but not enough. With Big Endian, most of the Expiration Date is still showing; with Little Endian, the other two dates are mostly visible. However, using spaces in the entered name changes the format of the outputted text quite a bit, making all characters deliminated by a space, and therefore incredibly easy to change. My apologies that I cannot actually show you what the files look like.Is there a better/more accepted way of storing this data?I would like the license files to work with existing FORTRAN programs, of which read unformatted files in the general structure I've detailed, but reverse-engineering this sounds a bit difficult from what I've read and my employer has offered to rewrite the FORTRAN files to accept this new license creation program if need be.
