Oct 5, 2011As most of you know, .Net framework 4.0/Visual Studio 2010 supports implicit line continuation in VB, which was not available in previous versions (at least not to my knowledge). I have a situation where I am working on an ASP.Net 3.5 application that is targeting a machine that does not currently have .Net 4.0 installed and from what I understand it won't be installed for some time yet on that machine. Obviously, my development machine does have .net 4.0 installed.
With the implicit line continuation feature in VS2010, I sometimes find myself forgetting to add the continuation, and VS2010 does not have an issue with that even when I am targeting a previous version. Additionally, I know that if I actually compile the code (business objects and such), issues with line continuation are not a problem, as the compiled dll works fine as a 3.5 .net file.
My concern is this. There are areas where I am doing VB.Net coding in the code behind(beside?) for the asp.net pages. These would only be compiled on the server when they are first used, but since the server doesn't have the .net 4.0 framework (or even if it did), does anyone know if this would this cause the compilation to fail if I missed a line continuation? If so, is there a way to enforce using line continuation characters in VS2010?
I realize that some best practices might not be getting followed here, but I'm not about to change all the development dynamics around here just yet. Also, I'm not in an environment where I could easily test this out on my own.
VS 2010 Upgrade From 2008 To 2010 - Now LINQ - IntelliSense Is Not Working For LINQ Stuff
Apr 20, 2010I just upgraded a project from VB 2008 to VB 2010. Before, the project did not use LINQ. I have started implementing it. So, I have updated the target framework from 2.0 to 3.5, and added a reference to System.Core, and imported the namespace System.LINQ to the entire project and also imported System.Data.LINQ into the form I'm working with (because it was not available in the list for Imported Namespaces in the references tab).
It's not throwing any errors now, but my IntelliSense is not working for LINQ stuff.
For example... I write this:

Then, if I type S. on the next line, the IntelliSense doesn't grab what it should for S (Only get Equals, GetHashCode, GetType, ReferenceEquals, and ToString, instead of the options I should get like Count, First, FirstOrDefault, etc...). If I Type S.First. then its the same thing, no IntelliSense that lists the available fields for S, just the standard options (Equals, GetHashCode, GetType, ReferenceEquals, and ToString). I should be seeing my column names in my table when I type S.FirstOrDefault.
So any ideas what is going on? When I type the code, for example, MessageBox.Show(S.FirstOrDefault.FirstName), it works perfectly. But it doesn't change the casing of the text (so it would read s.firstordefault.firstname) and no intellisense while doing it. But no errors. BTW - Everything works perfectly when creating a NEW VS 2010 application, it's just my projects upgraded from Visual Basic 2008 that have this issue.
C# - Multiple Line Continuation In IDE (Visual Studio 2010)?
Oct 1, 2010i notice that when i start next line of code and i press enter, it recompacts itself and the continued line moves left a bit... then if i place focus on the second line and press enter again, it (the second line) moves to the left some more, and it keeps doing this every time i focus on second line and press enter. how can i make it so that my second (and third etc) lines are formatted in a pre-determined way so they are always a certain amount of tabs indented to the right from where my line 1 starts?

Jan 24, 2012I find that each time there is a new line when enter key is press in VB intellisense is annoying. Although space is ok, but each time it has a new space and I have to press return to remove it, which is also inconvienient for multiple selections.

.Net Line Continuation Character Be The Last One On Line?
Jun 27, 2012Why must the line continuation character be the last one on the line? Is there a technical reason for this or is this a usual Microsoft "feature"?
In other basic dialects you can add a comment after it, but not in VB.net, so I'm curious as to why Microsoft decided to not allow comments on these lines.

The datagridview has columns for all 4 values as well as a 5th (a checkbox column called "colIsSelected"). There is no problem binding the list to the grid and displaying the items. The problem is that the query that gets the selected items in the grid is giving me an implicit cast error when option strict is enabled.
This is the query...

...and it produces the correct results with option strict off. The implicit cast squiggle is on the "row As DataGridViewRow" code, and the full message is "Implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewRow'*".
If I exclude the "As DataGridViewRow" from the query, I get a late binding error on the _row.Cells and _row.DataBoundItem and this also fails option strict.I need this to work with Option Strict enabled, and in VB.
IDE :: Make ENTER Key Complete Intellisense, But WITHOUT A Line Return
May 16, 2008Does anyone know how I can setup visual studio to use the enter key to complete intellisense, but without moving the cursor to the next line? I use multiple other IDE's that work in this fashion, and VS is really throwing off my rythym with this.

Because of this behavior, the report engine creates blank space on the main report if the subreport does not fit on the same page as the main report. Then, the report engine creates the subreport on a new page.

IDE - VS 2010 - Turn Off Intellisense Auto-complete
Oct 12, 2010is there an option to retain Intellisense suggestions but turn off the auto-complete completely in VB 2010? Since upgrading to Visual Studio 2010, I find that Intellisense's auto-complete is far too eager to replace code. It often happens that while typing a section of code I will find that I need a new variable. Rather than back up in the code and create the variable, I want to be able to type on and add the Dim statement once my train of thought has reached a good stopping point. However, as soon as I try to use an undefined variable or method or property, Intellisense jumps in to replace what I have typed with gibberish.
I like Intellisense showing what methods, properties and parameters are available; however I would like to turn off the feature which automatically triggers auto-complete whenever I type ahead.

.net - Visual Studio Loses/drops/deletes VB Continuation Lines After Subroutines?
Nov 20, 2009Several times while debugging a VB.Net program I have found that continuation lines are missing from a subroutine designed to handle an event. The continuation character "_" is there but the following line is missing

The first few times I figured I had made some editing error, but this has happened 3 times now, always in the same way (different subroutines but same place). As far as I can tell, no other continuation lines have changed. Is this a bug or some feature I have missed?
