C# - Multiple Line Continuation In IDE (Visual Studio 2010)?
Oct 1, 2010
i notice that when i start next line of code and i press enter, it recompacts itself and the continued line moves left a bit... then if i place focus on the second line and press enter again, it (the second line) moves to the left some more, and it keeps doing this every time i focus on second line and press enter. how can i make it so that my second (and third etc) lines are formatted in a pre-determined way so they are always a certain amount of tabs indented to the right from where my line 1 starts?

Several times while debugging a VB.Net program I have found that continuation lines are missing from a subroutine designed to handle an event. The continuation character "_" is there but the following line is missing
[Code]...
The first few times I figured I had made some editing error, but this has happened 3 times now, always in the same way (different subroutines but same place). As far as I can tell, no other continuation lines have changed. Is this a bug or some feature I have missed?

I am converting an older software package written in VB 6 to VS 2010.Not to incredibly painful but planning for the future as we have had lets say a few issues with VB 6 on our current layout of multiple OS and this is my first real project lead.We are a smaller job shop and we move on a rotation of new PC's/OS's come in to replace broken or exhausted older PC's in the front office and move the older PC's out to the shop floor.We have an array of different OS's ranging from Windows 98 and Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit OS). By the time I am done with the conversion we should be sitting comfortable with a range of PC's from XP and up. When creating the executable for my project is this something that can be handled ahead of time, creating multiple executables for specified OS, or an all in one package executable?I was looking to see what people had as suggestions at handling this.We haven't even bought VS yet and are looking at the VS 2010 Premium package, do I need Ultimate?

I have looked at the answers in the forum and some seem dated. I an an old vb2 person and need to move up. I understand sql very well and use complex queries. First test project and trying to add multiple tables to a data grid (Only Form in project).I used the Data wizard to add the Access data base and worked by way through to near the end. The query works in the wizard and returns the correct rows. The error message is "The solution returned by the new query differs from the base query."
During the creation process I selected all the tables. Reading some of the old anwsers I get the inpression that VB 2010 does not handle multiple tables in a datagrid (forum items go back to version 2008).

I am creating a VB application in Visual Studio 2010 that installs some SQL stored procedures. These stored procedures are encrypted otherwise I would just supply my clients with .sql files to create the stored procedures.
The install script that creates the stored procedure is 1500 lines in length and has been formatted in the way VS 2010 requires multi-line literals to be in:
"First Line" & _
"Second Line" & _
"etc..."
[Code]....

Why must the line continuation character be the last one on the line? Is there a technical reason for this or is this a usual Microsoft "feature"?
In other basic dialects you can add a comment after it, but not in VB.net, so I'm curious as to why Microsoft decided to not allow comments on these lines.

As most of you know, .Net framework 4.0/Visual Studio 2010 supports implicit line continuation in VB, which was not available in previous versions (at least not to my knowledge). I have a situation where I am working on an ASP.Net 3.5 application that is targeting a machine that does not currently have .Net 4.0 installed and from what I understand it won't be installed for some time yet on that machine. Obviously, my development machine does have .net 4.0 installed.
With the implicit line continuation feature in VS2010, I sometimes find myself forgetting to add the continuation, and VS2010 does not have an issue with that even when I am targeting a previous version. Additionally, I know that if I actually compile the code (business objects and such), issues with line continuation are not a problem, as the compiled dll works fine as a 3.5 .net file.
My concern is this. There are areas where I am doing VB.Net coding in the code behind(beside?) for the asp.net pages. These would only be compiled on the server when they are first used, but since the server doesn't have the .net 4.0 framework (or even if it did), does anyone know if this would this cause the compilation to fail if I missed a line continuation? If so, is there a way to enforce using line continuation characters in VS2010?
I realize that some best practices might not be getting followed here, but I'm not about to change all the development dynamics around here just yet. Also, I'm not in an environment where I could easily test this out on my own.

I want to build a macro which adds a ; to every line end, which hasn't already got one and is not empty or a { or }. I use C# in Visual Studio 2010 Professional so I probably need a VB Macro. I need it because I have to migrate Unittest from VBS to C# (Don't ask why). So I got thousands of lines like foo="53" bazz=1337 I do not care if support is dropped, I should be done in some weeks. Also if there is one ; put in to much, i still review the code later.

I am trying to compile my Visual Basic .NET project named Myproject.sln via command line commands.
I need to build and then to compile that solution.I read all questions here how to do it but I couldn't make it work.
My Visual Basic .NET compiler is called vbc.exe. Any idea how I do that thing?
I am using Visual Studio 2005.I have already read Microsoft's tutorial, "Building from the Command Line (Visual Basic)".

Does anybody know which version of Visual Studio 2010 contains the full set of Visual Basic SharePoint Templates? I am about to embark on a project to create Visual Web Parts to be used in a SharePoint report.
At the moment I am using Visual Studio 2008 and even though the WSPBuilder is installed none of the relevant SharePoint templates are present.Having searched SO and the web, most advise to install the templates via the Visual Studio command prompt: devenv /installvstemplates
Alas the Visual Studio command prompt is also missing from my VS2008 installation.So, the question remains: which version of VS2010 contains what I need for pain-free SharePoint development? There is a rather large price different between VS2010 Professional and VS2010 Premium, so can anyone tell me if the cheaper version (VS2010 Professional) contains all the Sharepoint templates?

I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

Back in Visual Basic 6.0 and prior I could have a picturebox control and then have multiple images on that and using a gif file; then I'd have some images transparent. For example, I am trying to make a map where each country has it's own layer and the void is transparent so the underlying picturebox contains all the water.
However, in visual studio I've noticed the image control is now gone. I tried using a panel and a picturebox on top of that and it works but I can't use another picturebox on top of that picturebox, nor can I stack multiple panels with the same affect.

I have a Windows project in Visual Studio 2010 in which I store all images in the project's resource file that Visual Studio created for me. However, it's getting cluttered and I'd like to separate images into multiple resource files if possible. I created a new resource file, but Visual Studio doesn't recognize it when I go to the form designer and try to change an image. The only file that comes up under the Project resource files available are MyProjectResources.resx. The one that I just created isn't there.

I can launch a program from inside my program and embedded it in my program using a Visual Basic Control such as a Panel. That works well if you launch say NotePad or Calculator.However, If I want to launch a program that uses MULTIPLE forms... all that gets embedded is the Main Form... All the other forms are floating on the desktop nonconstrained... So If I minimize my program the other forms are still shown.So what I am attempting to do is to get ALL the Forms from the external program embedded into their own objects on my form.Have pieced together a program from a couple of program samples that I have seen across the internet... Here's the code so far:[code]The Main form for the program that I am attempting to embed is 384 x 347 in size.Panel1 is a Panel Control on my Main Form."MyProgram.exe" is a program that I have written myself.I have looked at Spy++ for Visual Studio 2003 and it is able to identify ALL the forms from my program.My question is how do I embed ALL the forms from my external program in the NEW Program?

I am working to make a function that will update the back color of a text box based on multiple variables values. I can write the code to do the calculation, but I am not sure how to make the function realize which text box to update (as I will have about 30 different boxes). Below is the code that I have for each box so far, but I will have quite a few more, and would rather use a function to reduce the amount of code, and also make it cleaner as well.
If sngPreviousPrimaryPropertyTotal >= sngPrimaryPropertyTotalCost Then
txtPreviousPrimaryPropertyTotal.BackColor = ColorProgramLightGreen
Else
txtPreviousPrimaryPropertyTotal.BackColor = ColorProgramLightRed
End If
[Code] .....
Or is there a way that I can tell the function that it's updating the text box that call the function in the first place? Say if txtBox1 has updated text and calls the function, then the function 'knows' to update txtBox1, but will update txtBox2 when it's called by txtBox2.
