IDE :: No Lightning Bolt For VB Control Events?
Oct 2, 2007
I just opened up an Asp.NET project solution for some maintenance. I usually use C# but this project is in VB. When clicking on a form's button and looking at the properties view, I see no way to view the events for that button. Usually the lightning bolt button would be present in the properties view and clicking it would show all events for the control. From there you could see the event handlers or create an event handler by double clicking. Why don't I see that in this project. Is it an IDE setting or a VB project thing?
P.S. I thought I was in VS 2005 but it's 2003. 2003 usually shows me the lightning bolt though in my c# projects.

I created a control that has picture box control docked within it. This control allows me to "animate" the image by swapping them out by setting the interval to swap them at. I want to use this control kind of like an animated icon within a application, but because the picture box is docked, the control I created won't respond to the events, MouseHover specifically. I have never dealt with dynamic control events before. I have a variable number of a controls each created at runtime. However I don't know how to code events for each control as they should do different things. I've looked at WithEvents and AddHandler and know I have to use Sender however not sure how to use /where to put eg. MouseEnter 1 panel when there's several.

I am trying to make key shortcuts (e.g.: control + c = copy) in my program, but it seems to work in everything BUT the webbrowser control. I have keypreview set to TRUE, and have the code "for each control.... addhandler....form1.keydown" (you get the point).

I'm using VS2008, vb.net, and winforms. I've got 3 comboboxes on the same form who are all bound to the same data. If an item is added in one, I want the change reflected in the other two. I'm trying to create one sub to handle the adding of an item for all three combos. I found that the "sender" object appears to contain the control name. The Sub I created is not working quite right because after the item is added, the combo list display repeats itself. So instead of "Item1, Item2, Item3" after adding "Item3", I get "Item1", "Item2", "Item1", "Item2", "Item3". This coding works fine if I were to copy it to the Key_Down event for each combo and reference it directly (for example, use cboSpecialty1.Items.[code]...

I'd like to temporarily disable events for a given control. For example, the SelectionChanged event on a combobox might be used to update a display every time the user changes the combobox... but while I'm filling the combobox with values, I don't want the SelectionChanged event to be firing over and over... I need to disable events while the combobox is being populated. How do I do this?

In my old VB6 programs I use control events like Keydown to activate code. The code is the same for all text controls. However, I am hoping that there is a efficient way of handing this in VB.net. Using VB2010.
Private Sub txtField1_KeyDown(sender As Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles txtField1.KeyDown
ButtonState2()
End Sub
Private Sub txtField2_KeyDown(sender As Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles txtField2.KeyDown

Using VB 2008 Express.
Attaching code to buttons when they're clicked is easy when they're static buttons on the form; just double click the button on the form designer and add code to the event.
I have a series of buttons that are generated in a control array, so they're generated in a class, and in the form there are no buttons until runtime.
So newbie question with a probably simple answer...how do I enter code for the click event for buttons that aren't there until they're instantiated as a class at runtime?

In order to take advantage of the spell checking ability of WPF textboxes, I have added one to a user control (with the use of elementhost). This user control is used in various window forms. My current problem is trying to handle keyup events from this textbox but the windows form is unable to "get" any event from the control. I can access the properties of the textbox just fine (i.e. text, length, etc.) but keyboard events don't seem to work.I have found, however, that the following will bring back events from the WPF textbox:
Public Class MyUserControl
Private _elementHost As New ElementHost
Private _wpfTextbox As New System.Windows.Controls.Textbox
[code].....
The user control is now able to do something after the PreviewKeyUp event is fired in the WPF textbox. Now, I'm not completely sure how to have the window form containing this user control to work with this.

I have a TextBox which Is allowed only to read certain characters. I use KeyPress event to handle this event. I understand that The KeyPress event does not handle the pressing of the DELETE key on the keyboard. I do not want the user to be able to delete characters in the txtbox by using the DELETE key, I want the user only to be able to use the backspace key. I am writing this code in Visual Basic 2005. The following code appears to work in handling the DELETE key, but I am concerned that I might get bitten by the fact that I am using KeyDown and KeyPress on the same control (txtSource).
private sub txtSource_KeyDown(byval sender as object, byval e as KeyEventArgs) handles txtSource.KeyDown
IF e.KeyData = System.Windows.Forms.Keys.Delete then
e.handled=true
end if
end sub

I am using an inherited form extensively for the first time, and I'd like to know if what I'm doing is correct.I have a base form with a grid and four buttons (Add, Edit, Remove and Close). There is no functionality in any of the button click events, as the specific implementation of each derived form will be different. The only exception perhaps is that the Close button closes the form. The only reason I am using a base form really is because I've many forms that look the same.How do I now expose the button click events to any derived forms? The only straightforward way I could think of was to have the button click events call an Overridable method, which I then override in the derived form:
Public Class frmTableBase
Private Sub btnAdd_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnAdd.Click
Me.AddButtonClicked()[code]...
Is that the correct way? It seems a little bit overkill to have to do this, although I can't think of another way really... Perhaps I could add the Overridable keyword to the event handlers themselves (and make them public)..?I'm doing it the way I showed now however. It works, but I'd just like to know if this is the generally accepted way of doing this.

I have some code in a label's mousemove event that allows it to be dragged around my form while the left button is held down. While this is happening none of the other controls on the form respond to their own mousemove events as the mouse pointer passes over them. Is it possible to make more than one control respond to mousemove events at the same time?

I have created a base class for some user controls, then I created controls that inherit this class. This is so I can CTYPE the inherited controls back to the base class and refer to properties, methods and events in a common interface. The base class declares has some Public Event BLAH(Sender as object, e as EventArgs) declarations. The derived class then has Public Shadows Event BLAH(Sender as object, e as eventargs) declarations. My parent form adds handlers for the BLAH event. When the derived class fires the event, though, it does not get raised to the parent form.

I am trying to create a program, where the user click a button and this will add a custom control and then drag and drop them on the form.
What I want to be able to do is add multiple controls (by clicking this button) and for them all to have the same events. So basically they can add as many as they like of this control and then click on it and drag it anywhere.I know in vb6 there was the use of the control index but I am not sure how to do this in Visual Studio 2005?

I have another question about my customizable Menu/Tool/StatusStrip control.
I have three controls called CustomizableMenuStrip, CustomizableToolStrip and CustomizableStatusStrip. Each of those controls has a property called Appearance, which accepts an instance of a component called AppearanceControl.
The AppearanceControl component basically exposes all color properties for the customizable strips, so the user can edit them, and more importantly exposes a ToolStripProfessionalRenderer which the three strips have to use. This way the three strips are rendered with the colors the user chooses in the AppearanceControl.
Now, I'm wondering if I'm doing things the right way. When any of the color properties in the AppearanceControl has changed, all the strips that use that particular AppearanceControl should have their Renderer set again, and should be invalidated.
I figured the easiest way (and probably the only way?) to go about this was to have the AppearanceControl raise an event (AppearanceChanged), which the three strip controls listen for. When that event is raised, the strip controls can set their Renderer to the Renderer that the AppearanceControl exposes, and then invalidate themselves.
[Code].....
