IDE :: VB 2010 Express, Windows 7 Debug Not Stopping On Error
Aug 8, 2011
I've just installed Visual Studio 2010 Express on a new laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.
When I debug a VB project and an error is encountered a message is sent to the immediate window, but execution is not halted. This means I am unable to look at variables etc.

Simple question that does not seem to be covered: If I use a lot of Debug.WriteLine statements in my code, will they be completely absent in my production version?
I mean: Is the compiler smart enough to not emit any code for those calls? Or would I have to surround them by #if DEBUG..#end if directives?

I wrote a custom windows service (VB .Net) to run some processing on data files in the background of one of our servers. The service basically finds the next file to process, breaks it apart and makes a PDF or two - nothing super complicated. It utilizes a timer, if a file is not found, it waits a bit and checks again (repeat indefinitely). The service has run for a week or two with no issues/pausing/stopping. I have plenty of error handling for this and I have not been able to break it... until today.

I have a VERY perplexing problem in both Visual Basic 2008 & 2010 Express. When I try to debug my project, the program runs without stopping at any breakpoints. If I start the debugging by clicking on Step In, the application just starts running. The Immediate Window has the following line, when I start debuging with Step In:Step into: Stepping over non-user code 'QBPOExport.GlobalFunctions.Main' (QBPOExport.GlobalFunctions.Main is my startup task)

The solution and all the projects within it are set for Debug;I deleted the .suo file as recommended in one posting.I ran rebuild on each and every project individually and the entire solution.I deleted the files in binDebug and did the whole thing over again. Still can't debug.
While stepping into (F8) I did get the hollow debug symbol in the margin and when just running the program (F5) the program starts up without stopping at any of several breaks in different functions and subs.

Since the coming of Windows7 at our office we have sometimes the issue that the print spool is crashing.Users don't have admin rights to restart the service so that leaves them only at restarting their computer as solution.Which costs alot of time... As we cannot find a final solution to this problem I've begin to write a small tool so they can restart it..I've only hard code a local admin account in the source for this operate for them..

I upgraded to VB2010 from VB2008 early this year and have been working on a Windows Service which I am now debugging. When I was using VB2008 in Windows XP SP3 I would put a Stop statement in the code and when execution got to it a dialog would open asking if I wanted to debug it using a development environment listed in a provided list. The list contained the VB2008 VS IDE which I selected which would in turn transfer me to the IDE in debug mode. I was very happy with this setup.
Now I am using VB2010 with Windows 7 and when the execution reaches the Stop statement the service just stops. It no longer offers the choice and ability to "jump" into the development environment via the dialog that I mentioned.[code]...

trying to get my hands wet on vs 2010 and i downloaded samples from ms site but when i tried to run some of the DB samples i received this sql error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) any ideas how to get around on this?

When i try to save my program an error pops up telling me that it cannot debug because some sort of file is missing... While my other projects just work, and while i repeat the same steps (placing an entity like a button, coding it), it just shows that error. Its really strange!

I'm getting the 403 Forbidden error while running a VS 2010 in debug mode. It gives me this error as it tries to read thru an XML File. See attachment. This is a web app and it's reading an XML file that retrieves the DB/Server information. It's not the Web.Config file but just a regular xml file. This file is read by every application in our system. Not sure why it suddenly started doing this. I've created the virtual directory on our IIS Server and set permissions on the C:inetpubwwwrootAppName directory of my C: drive where the app resides.

I have written the below code for a payroll calculator. When I run the program, it gives me my own error message box no matter if my number of hours fall within the 5-60 hours range as I have stipulated. Is there something wrong with my code? (well, obviously there is something wrong--I just cant find it!)
CODE:
'This program calculates the Gross and Net Pay as well as the Tax Deduction amount of an employee's wages when given the input of Employee Name, Tax Rate, Hours Worked, and Hourly Pay Rate.

this is my very first posting and I must say I am desperate. I have a VB assignment due in 2 days and I am so lost. I have written a code to draw some graphic, just a basic house, tree, sun etc. I have also written a code to magnify said graphics which were all the specifications of my Assignment 1 part A. Now for Part B I am being asked to extend my program so that: A - My graphic can be drawn using different colour schemes designed by me but chosen by the user B - My graphic or an appropriate part of it can be animated around the picture box if the user chooses to do so. C - Error checking is included.

I have created a Windows Service in VB.NET (VS2010) that executes a certain task every minute. When the service is being stopped, either manually by the user, or when the system is rebooted, what can I do to make sure the task is being finished properly before the service is actually terminated?

This sounds like a dumb question, but I'm using VS 2010 Express edition and cannot find where to add a new Windows form. The templates provided don't indicate a Windows form . Are they called something different in this version of VS?

I recently downloaded the Windows API code pack for .net, and seeing there was VB.net examples inside there, I opened them up. Upon building I get a warning that the referenced components 'Core' and 'Shell' could not be found. Looking in the code pack folder I see there are no DLLs at all, but instead a whole load of C# sources.
Do I have to download C# Express (which I want to avoid) to use the code pack or are there precompiled DLLs somewhere?

I am working in Windows 7 Home Premium using MS-Visual Basic 2010 Express. I am having difficulty connecting to an Access 2007 database using ADO. When I try to connect to the database I get the following error:
Error Code: -2147467259
Exception: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application
Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers

There were several reference to compiling the program using x86.
Go to Project menu -> Properties -> Compile tab -> Select "Advanced Compile Options" -> Select "x86" instead of "AnyCPU"
I followed the path and there was not any option to select x86 in VB 2010 Express.

I used the following code(with bug):
Code:
For n = 0 To 100
If saveLine(n).Substring(0, 8) = "heading:" Then
cboSelect.Items.Add(saveLine(n).Substring(8))
End If
Next n
The For loop only ran 5 times. It turned out that saveline(5) was shorter then 8 characters, so I changed the code which solved the problem:
Code:
For n = 0 To 100
If saveLine(n).Length > 8 Then
[code]....
VB 2010 neatly exits the for loop when the bug occurs. In this case it was easy for me to pick up the bug, because the combo box was not properly populated. What if it was not obvious that the for loop did not complete? It is quite scary to think that bugs like this are not displayed at run time.

I get the following error when trying to compile the simplest prpgram. Error 1 Class 'CLSID_CorSymWriter' could not be created: System Error &H80040154& After looking at other stuff on the net I removed VB 2010, VB 2008, any C or C++ runtimes and any .NET Framework programs I could find, and then re-installed VB 2010, but the problem still persists.

I am getting the following compilation errors from Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express on the first line of my code:
Error 1 Newline in constant C: cdotnetdevsrcvbmain estHelper.vb 1 1 Component Sources
Error 2 Too many characters in character literal C: cdotnetdevsrcvbmainRtestHelper.vb 1 1 Component Sources
The first line of my code is simply:
' Copyright 2011
It is generating the same compilation error for all my comments. Does anyone know why MS VB Express 2010 is acting this weird? Comments in visual basic are supposed to start with a single apostrophe so I don't understand this weird behavior.

I have an application that is on a server running. The way I have it setup is I put it on the Windows Scheduler to run at certain times. We now need to run it constantly on the server. I change the code to put in a loop until I pause or stop it. One issue I have found is that I can kick it off but when I close out of my remote session the application stops.
How do I keep my application to keep running even after I sign out of RDP?

I was wondering how someone could stop a For loop in the middle of it, according to parameters. I have tried but cannot find a solution that works, I suppose an example of this would be if a loop were increasing a label by 1 from 0 to 100 and the user sets it to end at 57 or any number in between and when the loop reached the number to stop.
