i want to create a listbox in which a user introduces a name (Ex Item1) I also want to user to insert a comment in the shape of a string ( Ex. Item1 was added yesterday) and link it somehow to his Item1.
Once the program starts the user should be able to insert an item in the listbox with a comment; and once he selects the item i want a MsgBox appearing with the comment of the specific Item, that he also inserted.
Think something like a book library using a listbox.You go and browse books in a listbox and once you click on them they display on the right the cover of the book, the authors, date, ratings etc.I just need to know how to link a ListBoxItem to do something, and i want the Library administrator to do it in runtime.The MsgBox example should do it for me.
how to get the user input in comment textbox and insert into my database and then retrieve the data to output in another webform.
View 3 RepliesI am using XML literals to parse files that contain data. I was wondering if there is a way to take a section of the xml file and pass it as a variable to another function...
<XML>
<DATA>
<STUFF>
<blahblah>sdfsdf</blahblah>
[code].....
I know with XML literals I can use ...<STUFF> and get the info out of that section, but how can I take an entire section of the xml, like MORESTUFF and set it as a variable to pass to another function that can parse that xml?
What i am tring to do is execute certain code based on a variable held in a module someting like compiler directives, here's an example for lack of an explanation.[code]...

For Each <reference> IN <expression>is <expression> evaluated for each iteration of the loop? Specifically, if <expression> is costly to evaluate, would it be wise to evaluate it once before the For Each statement and keep the result in a local variable to use in the For Each statement?
I am creating a custom config section that will allow me to manage what ELMAH exceptions I want to ignore from my VB.NET/ASP.NET app. Here's my code. I made it easy to paste in a blank code file if anyone's up to the challenge of diagnosing the problem.

What boggles my mind is that this all works fine in my C# console test app after I convert the code from VB.NET using a web utility. However, when I paste the VB code from my web app into my VB.NET console test app, it doesn't work there, either, so it appears to be a C#/VB issue. What am I doing wrong here?
I thought it would be fun if I could write vb.net or c# code at runtime and the interpreter would automatically parse it like python does it, so I made a little program, which would do something similar. Basically it looks like this:
InputArgs = Console.ReadLine()
ParseInput(InputArgs.Split(" "))
Private Sub ParseInput(Args as List(Of String), Optional TempArgs as List(Of String))

I know it's not a good system, but it show's the basics. So my question is: Is it possible to make vb.net or c# like python - interpreted at runtime?
Quick question, of which the quickest and easiest answer may well be to rearrange related code, but let's see...So I have an If statement (a piece of code which is a part of a full working solution written in C#) rewritten using VB.NET. I am aware the VB.NET IIf(a, b, c) method evaluates both b and a regardless of the trueness of the first evaluation, but this seems to be the case in my standard construct, too:
If (example Is Nothing Or example.Item IsNot compare.Item) Then
'Proceed
End If

Is there a way to change when an expression in a datacolumn is evaluated?
I'm trying to make a simple total function which sums the values of a particular column in a data grid. Normally the expression is evaluated when I leave from the datagridview, but I wish it to be evaluated when the row is changed.
I am using VWD 2008 express edition to edit the code below. The HTML Insert Code is as follows: I have no code behind.

My objective is to populate the DetailsView with a single field in ASP.Net VB, when Inserted, a Record will be created with only a key field.
I have a variable creativly named VAR1 I need to insert the variables value in my regkey where it says 140
how do i do this.. Private Sub OKAY_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OKAY.Click

I use VB .NET 2002 (academic version) I have created an MS Access database to be populated with vaules extracted from dBase files. Some numerical values can be null - ie where no data was recorded in the dBase file. Relevant field properties in MS Access mdb table are set to "Not Required" as follows - dt0 is the name in code of the Access table "AllData":
With dt0.Columns
.Append("Date", DataTypeEnum.adDate)
colTest.Name = "Ch1Deg"
[CODE]...
Using an INSERT INTO command I can send a null value to the field:
SQLMdb = "INSERT INTO [AllData]" " ([Date],[Ch1Deg])" & _
" VALUES ('" & dDate1 & "',null)
My problem is how to pass a variable which sometimes takes the value System.DBNull.
If I use SQLMdb = "INSERT INTO [AllData]" " ([Date],[Ch1Deg])" & _
" VALUES ('" & dDate1 & "','" & dDeg & "')
Then when dDeg is numeric then there is no problem and the table is populated. When data is missing and dDeg takes the value System.DBNull then it's a no go! The error message is "Data type mismatch in criteria expression."
Is there a way round this with VB .NET 2002 or do I need to upgrade to a later version which has nullable data types, eg nullable integers and doubles etc?
I am developing a Windows Service in VB.NET. I have added a two new .xsl files in my project.
My problem is that file: how can I insert that file into a particular string?
Dim CTD As String = ??
I need to call that CTD.xsl in the above line of code.
Dim cDT as date
strSQL = "Insert Into computetb (period_id, date, staffer_no, day_type, restday, rate_hr, regular_hr, ot_hr, night_diff, basic_pay, ot_pay, nd_pay) Values (" & gPeriodID & ",#" & cDT & "#," & cID & ",'" & cTYP & "'," & cREST & "," & cRATE & "," & cREG & "," & cOT & "," & cND & "," & bp & "," & ot & "," & nd & ")"

I am developing an app which allows a user to send emails.I am using a multiline text box for the user to capture data, but when I convert it to a string it does not pick up a new paragraph.How would I insert a <br> & </br> for a new line within a string variable?
View 6 Repliesre: Access of shared member constant member enum member or nested type through an instance qualifying expression may not be evaluated I understand that this warning means that you should not reference a shared member via an instance. However, in my test case Test2.t.x("3"), I don't understand why it thinks I'm using an instance, since t is also a shared member. Also, note Test3. See what happens when you change declaration of GetObject() As Object to As Test3. I think I understand the behavior (not eval'd until runtime)

View 2 RepliesI am currently working with a gridviews in asp.net(vb). I have it where I am able to pass information from gridview1 to gridview2 on the next page. However, what I need to do now is pass a variable from a column in gridview2 to the header of that page. i.e. in Gridview2 we have a column and all results are the same, the column header is StoreName and all the data for column is Sears. I know how to make the entire column invisible, but at the top of the page I need a sentence that looks like this:
Store Information for Sears
I am having trouble with what the code would look like for that line, all the thing I have tried have resulting in using a variable before it is declared. I need this line to be dynamic as the results will not always be for Sears.
I use .Net 2.0 on this one and i have a warning , i noticed that it runs over a line , here's the code:

For i = 1 To 5
y = y + 100
Dim pic2 As New PictureBox

If it's possible, it would be a lifesaver since I can't use XElement and XAttribute to add the nodes manually. We have multiple templates and they frequently change (edit on the fly).
If this is not doable, can you think of another way so that I can use templates for the XML?

View 13 RepliesI'm using the following function to brighten up color values (it's a lambda in my code, but that shouldn't make a differende):
Function ReduceDistanceTo255(ByVal i As Byte) As Byte
Return i + (255 - i) 2
End Function
It won't compile, since the compiler interprets 255 and 2 as integers rather than bytes, making the result of type Integer. Unfortunately, there is no Byte type character, so I cannot just write 255B or something like that.There are a few obvious workarounds to the problem:
Function ReduceDistanceTo255(ByVal i As Byte) As Byte
Return i + (CByte(255) - i) CByte(2)
End Function
and
Function ReduceDistanceTo255(ByVal i As Byte) As Byte
Return CByte(i + (255 - i) 2)
End Function
[code]....
The first one is just plain ugly and hard to read, because every literal needs to be CByted. The second one performs calculations in integers and then converts the result to Byte, which is OK, but not as elegant as a pure-Byte operation. The third workaround doesn't require CBytes, but it's drawbacks are obvious.
In VB.NET I can easily embed strings into XML literals using <xml><%= "my string" %></xml>. How can I embed an XElement instance? I know I can use methods on the XElement, XNode, etc classes, but I'd like to do it in the XML literals if possible.
