I am trying to get a label to show briefly (3 seconds) when the form loads. The following code gives the 3 seconds, but the label doesn't show. The label is set to visible in the Designer properties.
'hide label1 after 3 seconds
Threading.Thread.Sleep(3000)
Label1.Visible = False
Adding 'Label1.Visible = True before the sleep function doesn't help.

I'm trying to create a program that installs required .dll's for a program due to a clean install..What I need to do is Get a value in the registry and use it for the program files path.. but I've noticed some pc's don't have the same configuration because of the version the user is using. Anyway This is what I have so far:[code].....
What I'm trying to do is find a registry key called "SoftInstallPath", if found I need the end of the path to goto the new directory(new_dll) not the old one (dll).. and if "SoftInstallPath" cannot be found.. I need it to find "ProgInstallPath" and use it instead and do the same thing.By the way I'm using Visual Studio Professional 2008 on a Vista x86 machine.Also error I keep getting is: Warning 10 Function 'FixPath' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used.

I found a way to use VB.Net to get the default audio device in Windows 7 through downloading something extra - in this case, NAudio - but I'm now having to research whether this can be done through nothing more than run-of-the-mill Visual Studio .Net stuff, with no extra downloads, externally-done system configurations, or anything else whatsoever. Is this possible? My current research suggests that it basically isn't.

I have several executable files that make up a full .NET application. One of the .net applications downloads a new version of the software, exits the main application, makes file changes directly inside of the c:program filesmy application area directly. I install this application using Installaware and it is code signed and verified with godaddy, so it gets around the antivirus programs. This has been running for a long time, and I never put too much thought into what security levels are allowed to directly access the files in this area, because it always seemed to worked perfectly in Win7, Vista and XP.
Now I have created a virtual machine, one inside Windows, and then one inside Parallels on a Mac. In these two virtual machines, the executable file that installs a new version of the software only works properly if I choose the two options on the compatibility tab in Windows, "Run this program as an administrator" and "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7". Now I have found this article: [URL]. This even let me set up my registry settings in the set up of my program so that one specific exe will just run properly. I am concerned about just patching something this way.
With Visual Studio running in the virtual machines, the code executes perfectly. When I run the executable that I JUST COMPILED from Visual Studio, that executable will only run properly with the choices stated above, or more specifically, this registry setting:
"c:\program files\onespot\onespotinstall.exe"="WIN7RTM RUNASADMIN"
The exact same PC that has been mirrored onto these virtual machines works fine. It has been impossible to troubleshoot where the problem lies. The line of code that gets executed to EXIT the main program finds the process, and does a gentle shut down. That works fine. Even testing inside that application works fine. But I never can get a return from the Process.Start line. Narrowing down to a line of code is not working.

I write program for Windows CE that should work with Serial ports. I use object System.IO.Ports.SerialPort. Everything works well but when I close program and open it again, I receive error: Port is in use! At the end I write:
port.close()
port.dispose()
And If I add this:System.GC.collect() than everything begins to work But problem is that computer gets stuck when garbage collector is called for each port. If I tried to use collector somewhere else, it doesnt "collect" ports and they look like used if program starts again.

How do i check if specific port is blocked by Windows firewall , both in incoming and outgoing connections.
I've seen code samples such as this one:
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Dim host As String = "localhost"
Dim port As Integer = 6900
[Code]....
But how can i know if the exception is thrown specifically because of firewall blocking, and not because of other socket errors?

Does anyone have experience writing data to the parallel port (printer port) in Windows 7 64-bit. I have been trying inpout32.dll, inpoutx64.dll and following all the info on http://www.highrez.co.uk/ and www.logix4u.net but can't get anything to work. I have an on-board parallel port at &H378 - not an add-on card - and have tried various modes in the BIOS (standard, ECP etc). I have a background in electronics so I am confident my testing methods are sound; I just cannot get a data bit to change state under program control. I need to send data to an 8-bit port on some 20th Century electronics so serial/USB interfaces are not really an option. There must be a way to control those 8 data bits in Windows 7, mustn't there?

I'm experiencing a weird problem. I need to create a Windows service that listens to a port for data. The data is comma separated, so I need to split it up and just write a few of the separated values to a file. This is a brief summary of my code:-
Do While True
tcpClient = tcpListener.AcceptTcpClient()
networkStream = tcpClient.GetStream()
Dim bytes(tcpClient.ReceiveBufferSize) As Byte
[code]....
Now the above code works fine. But suppose I just want to write only (2) to file i.e 2 of the comma separated values, problems arise. This is what happens:-
If I include both lines (1) and (2), output file = lines (1) and (2)
If I include only line (1) and comment out (2), output file = line (1)
If I include only line (2) and comment out (1), output file = BLANK ???

I am having trouble running a VB.NET 2.0 Serial Port application in Windows 7. I developed it in Windows XP, it ran fine in Windows 2000 and now when the company upgraded the machines to Windows 7, the application does not kick off. All platforms were/are 32-bit. I did some research online, but have not found anything relevant to resolve my issue. Does anyone know what the issue might be and the possible solution to it?

I am writing a vbs to create local port to connect to our printer server (i.e local port for \PrintServerPrintQueue1). I can create the local port succesfully through editing the registry HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPorts and then restarting the spooler service in Windows 7 32bit. However, the same script cannot create the port in Windows 7 64bit. The registry was also changed but cannot create the local port after restarting spooler service. Does anyone know what difference between 32bit and 64bit Windows when creating the local port?

I'm confused , in the old days if I wanted to access a parallel or serial port I would simply set up the appropriate registers and read/write to I/O Registers. but USB is a whole different animal. Lets assume I plug device X into a usb port How do I find where the pc, or manufacturer has placed it? If it's a ddl then what is my fetch? if it's a virtual port where do I find the virtual irq and read/write port? What if it's a dongle, where do I find it's read registers? what if it's an external piano, where do I find it's sound out read regs etc.

I wanted to know what are the risks of opening up a socket server on a specified port? Right now I have it limited to only accept requests from 1 specific IP to that port and all the other ones get rejected (using the windows firewall), is there a way to implement an authentication or anything else so I can allow it to be accessed from any IP worldwide yet have it secured?

I am looking to write a VB.NET windows app or service to do simple HTTP port forwarding. This is normally done within my router, but I have more forwards to do than the router can support (10) so I would like to do it programatically.
Quite simply, an HTTP request would come in on a port where the application/service is running, and it would automatically forward the conversation to another IP address and port. That way, my router could forward a range of ports to one machine (where the application/service would be running) and the application/service would dole the requests out to the various IP/Port combinations it was listening for.
