We have 2 applications: web-based (PHP) and Desktop (VB) sharing the same database (Hostgator). Our web app has a fast access to the database (it's localhost). Our desktop application suffers with slow access and frequent timeouts. Should we share a database?
View 4 RepliesI need to edit and add records to a shared MSAccess .mdb file residing on a server (actually a shared Public folder during development), preferably through an OleDBAdapter or OleDBConnection. I've been able to connect and read data from the database, but receive an "Operation must use an updateable query." error when trying to invoke the OleDBAdapter.Update({datatable}) method. The Update method works fine if I move the database (and connection) to my local C: drive, but fails when moved to the shared folder. Eventually, the shared .mdb file will need to reside on a server after development.

I am developing an access database that will be shared with multiple users.I don't want the users to access the database directly so I will have them enter new data on a data access page. The data access page is stored on a Microsoft Share Point web page, and the database is stored on a network drive.Here is my problem: When new data is entered on the web page I need it to trigger a WillChangeRecordset event; however, I have not been successful because the web page does not declare a new instance of a recordset object.At a minimum I need the new data to be processed before the web page appends the new data to the table.

i would like to build an inventory manager application that would have two versions :1. Would run on the desktop 2. Would run on windows mobile 6 I would like to have both these versions store and read data from a database that can be stored centrally either on a webserver or somewhere on the LAN.

View 2 RepliesI am designing a desktop application that will be driven by local data. I am trying to determine the best way to accomplish this. The database would contain about 10-12 tables if I use a database and I would imagine no more than 10000 records in any one table (but honestly 99% of users would not have more than 1000 records). I am thinking about using SQL Server Compact.
Is this a good solution? I can certainly include this in my installation, but I am just wondering if anyone knows of a better solution? If this is the best solution, how would you suggest that I create the tables upon deployment? Should I just run "queries" with create table statements in them from my vb application or include a database file or what?

When switching to a new desktop it starts a new instance of my app in that desktop (works) and on the form load event it says process.start("explorer.exe") <- here is the problem. It only shows a window not the actually bar.Also this may be important it shows the window, but when I navigate to explorer.exe 'C:Windowsexplorer.exe' and open it there. The explorer bar does show up.

I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?
I seem to be drawing a blank. I'd like to create a "shared" variable that is shared with all instances of a class but not classes that inherit from it. For example.Class A: Shared list As New List(Of String): list.Add("A")
Class B Inherits A: list.Add("B")Class C Inherits B: list.Add("C")The end result I'd like is that any instance of A has just A in the list. Any instance of B has A and B in the list. Any instance of C has A, B, and C in the list. I can accomplish it by creating Instance variables, but I have to construct the list for each instance of a class. I'd like to construct it once for a specific point in the Hierarchy and then share it accross other instances of that class.

I'm working on one of my applications and I'm trying to find a way to use the "Go To Desktop" function that goes directly to the desktop without minimizing any window (This can be achieved by clicking on the Win + D buttons or on the desktop icon in the quick launch toolbar), but how can I activate it using vb? no errors with this code, but how is Me possible since the Event is shared. it seems like there's no errors between switching shared with un-shared and switching Me with Myclass, all 4 combinations seem to work, isn't that weird
We have a system that makes a use of 3rd party COM DLL written in vba We have a centralised web application and 1-50 client machines that must reference that COM DLL in order to use our centralised web application.
The COM DLL is going to be updated rapidly in the future, which means that it has to be re-installed on every machine manually.Is it possible to centralise this COM DLL somwhere on the network? Is there any other alternatives? Otherwise the maintenance overhead will be huge.
I've created a Class Library using vb.net, the thing is that several applications should use this file.
I'm using Inno setup, and I'm declaring the dll file to be shared.
in the client app i've added refrence to the dll and set "Copy Local" to false.
Now if i put the exe file (the client app) in the same folder with the dll everything works correctly, but once I move the exe or use another application that should use the so called shared dll the assembly cannot be loaded because the system cannot find him ("IOFileNotFoundException")
What is the use of shared variable in vb.net?
