MS Runtime Required For App To Run - How To Include With Setup

Apr 7, 2010

My application requires access to be installed on the computer or at least the MS Access runtime. Is their a way to include that with the application to check for that component/resource or install it if it isn't? Or would it just be easier to include a link to tell the user where to get the runtime if the error happens? I am using Visual Studio 2008 and the windows form app is written in VB.net. I am currently using click once for the deployment.

Include A Separate Initialization File With Setup Package?

Feb 8, 2010

I have developed a windows forms desktop application using vb.net 2005. It is installed on client computers using a setup package.

One of the clients wants to redistribute the setup package to other users.

He wants to provide the users with an initialization file containing the database server name which they will be using, so that it is available when the application is installed. They are apparently incapable of physically typing in a server name themselves after installing the application.

Is there any way I can include a separate file with the setup package which the application can find after it has been installed?

.NET Applications Hangs On Remote Desktop?

Aug 13, 2009

I have a problem with a large application that consists of windows forms mainly, but some WPF windows and controls (we also use DevExpress controls v9.1). The problem is that the application sometimes hangs when it runs in a remote desktop session, and that session gets locked due to inactivity, and the user comes back and unlocks the session. The hang seems very similar to the hangs you get when accessing GUI controls from a none GUI thread, but I'm pretty sure that's not what causes the problem. (We had a lot of those problems earlier, and have fixed all multithreading problems we were able to find. And the hangs now never occures when the application runs outside the remote desktop environment.)

I've done a lot of research on the problem but I've still not found a clear point to what causes the problem. However, I think there might be a problem related to some combination of remote desktop and .NET framework. The reason for this is posts like this:

I'm practicing using the setup and deployment project. I can add a shortcut to the desktop and give it an icon to display without problem. Many applications have a choice of icons to display for the desktop icon; when we right-click on the icon and choose "change icon" there is a box that appears giving the user a choice of different styles of icons to use for the programme. My question is: how can I give the user a choice of icons to be able to select which one to display? Do I have to make a dll file or is it another method?
