Possible To Create WinForm Apps That Can Access An Intranet?
Aug 13, 2009
I'm not looking for a solution, rather I just want to know if this is possible or not with VB.NET (which I'm still just a beginner on). What I'm looking to develop is a WinForm application that allows users within the company network to share files and other information.

I am trying to create an application that will login our company's intranet portal via a webpage. The webpage has a single frame in it that loads a secure(https) login form. After logging in, the application will need to read and send xml to and from the portal. I have been digging around and have seen a few different ways of submitting the login information from the program to the site, however, I have not gotten any of them to work. From what I can tell it is difficult to change the values of input boxes that are inside a frame. Am I accurate on this? There will be a large amount of data transfer between the app and the portal so I will need something lightweight but I have enough room that I would rather not reinvent the http/web-browser wheel if at all possible. The reason I say that is because I have read that some objects that handle web pages are very resource hungry. I have no preference on the .net frameworks as this is the area of VB thats kinda confusing. What I am looking for is either a point or violent shove in the right direction.

I have learned to create programs in VB.NET with Visual Studio, but the downside of that is that i need the .NET framework, which is not on every computer. Can I create a program in VB.NET without it needing the .NET framework? If yes, what tools do i need?

is it possible to create VB .Net apps without a mainwindow?I want to call my VB app from another app. It will just take a few files, and input them in a database. So, I need no window.

At my company we build a lot of small, administrative type databases generally used by a dozen or less users. We have thus far done them entirely in Access. I've been doing VB forever and would like to write nicer, rich UI apps using a VB front-end to and Access database instead, as I find Access apps clumsy to use; VB apps look better and have more UI options.
I've started to play around with building Data Sources, Binding Sources, etc. and dropping them on forms, trying to create something useful with as little code as possible. I'm just wondering what folks generally think of using this approach. Remember this is for small, not complicated db apps with few users.
I know in the VB6 world bound controls took some heat for being not worth the effort it saved you. Also, is there a good book on the subject that concentrates on creating VB/Access apps with minimal code?

We recently aquired a first generation ipad and after playing around with it, it occurred to me that many elements of my current vb project could find an audience in this technology. The suggested method of developing these apps is with a special software kit and an apple computer. Since this would require an unacceptable investment with my current finances, I am wondering if it is possible to create these apps using visual studio with vb.net, c#, etc.

I am using VB 2008 to develop apps working with Access. With this IDE I can compile my apps as x86 . Then runs fine under 64 bits Windows 7 and Vista Systems.
First question:but if I run this app under XP 64 bits, will run fine too?
second question:the apps developed with VB 2003 (these work with access too ..."jet oledb"). How I can compile as x86? I have not seen this option like VB2008.

I have always developed apps for desktops with an access database on one server for one company or sql server. I had one connection string. Now I am in a situation with multiple clients using my software on their own server. This means different connection strings can anyone suggest an efficient way to do this without changing connection strings for each server throughout the application?

Assuming i have a winform that has a button called "Create a Quote". Once user clicks it,
a PDF File gets created on desktop. The PDF File has a fixed design/structure e.g. the logo is at the top left corner, the headers are fixed, etc. However, the data it self is pulled from a database.

I created a new WinForm application then dragged a notify icon onto my designer. I coded my desired functionality for the NotifyIcon's behavior inside the Form1.vb file.I think I remember something about adding a module to the project, and setting the project to launch the aforementioned module instead of the form...but I can't figure out/recall how to keep the functionality I've coded into Form1.vb.

Does a Winform Framework exist for something similar to ASP.NET Masterpage or MS Access SubForm ?
With MS Access SubForm you can do like ASP.NET Masterpage. It's a huge loss of time with Winform when having to create a lot of complex form. You have to compensate with either Code Generation which create code duplication or do Runtime Dynamic Form which is much more difficult.

Basically, what I've done is given the user four tabs to choose from. The main one is the dictionary which I've compiled, and the other three tabs link to online encyclopedias and dictionaries. However, what I want to do is make an app for each of these, because of the fact that the screen space I am giving the user is limited (499px x 254px), and I also believe that it will look more professional.
What I'm thinking of doing is putting the logo towards the top, and then:For Wikipedia, putting the title and picture at the top and breaking the article into show/hide sections like the mobile version
For Wiktionary, putting the title at the top, and breaking it down into show/hide sections when applicable
For Dictionary.com. putting the title at the top and showing the definitions (with linked pronunciations) underneath
Of course, I'll need it to automatically redirect itself to the webpage I need it to go to, because I don't want to type another 300,000 lines of code just to go to a website.

I've got an app on server 1 that's attempting to copy files from server 2. Server 1 is 'quarantined' from the rest of the local network for security reasons, but the network guy has made a couple of server 1 directories available to server 1 via IP. Thus, in my VB.NET app on server 1 I am trying to do this:
Code:dim filearr as string()filearr = System.IO.Directory.GetFiles("\10.0.0.21packinglists", "*.pdf")
However, I want my app to run unattended and 10.0.0.21 requires a login and password. Can I configure a connection string or something to provide hands-off authentication?

I'm planning to use some session variables on an intranet ASP/VB.NET page, and want to make sure that I'm not missing out on anything important I should know, or that I have my information mixed up. So here's what I (think) I know about session variables. They:are stored on the server, so if I have a lot of users then they'll each be using some more memory which could lead to a slowdown.are inaccessible by the user unless I expose access. hang around/persist across user requests (i.e. each time the user makes a request from the page the data will still be there - until it times out). This also means that I need to make sure that the variable doens't have "left over" data in it.
Is there anything that I've got totally wrong, or anything I'm missing? I'd prefer not to get bitten by a bug down the road because I think I understand what's going on.

My company uses ActiveDirectory, and naturally the IT department wants to maintain control over it and not give control to other users. I'm developing an ASP.NET app (for internal use only) using an SQL Server 2008 database. My question is, how can I BEST use the .NET namespaces and SQL Server to manage access to the app within the organization at the application (or possibly DB) level? I would like the user to be authorized based on their network username as provided by ActiveDirectory. On a side note, I would also like to access their AD contact information.
From my understanding I can use the ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider class or Domain Services in the System.DirectoryServices namespace. There's also LDAP which apparently is another possibility. I'm having a hard time making sense of it all, and much less which is the best option and how to implement it. Can anyone provide me with some direction and possibly some simple sample code?
