Possible To Create VB .Net Apps Without A Mainwindow?
Jan 20, 2009
is it possible to create VB .Net apps without a mainwindow?I want to call my VB app from another app. It will just take a few files, and input them in a database. So, I need no window.
I have learned to create programs in VB.NET with Visual Studio, but the downside of that is that i need the .NET framework, which is not on every computer. Can I create a program in VB.NET without it needing the .NET framework? If yes, what tools do i need?
We recently aquired a first generation ipad and after playing around with it, it occurred to me that many elements of my current vb project could find an audience in this technology. The suggested method of developing these apps is with a special software kit and an apple computer. Since this would require an unacceptable investment with my current finances, I am wondering if it is possible to create these apps using visual studio with vb.net, c#, etc.
I'm not looking for a solution, rather I just want to know if this is possible or not with VB.NET (which I'm still just a beginner on). What I'm looking to develop is a WinForm application that allows users within the company network to share files and other information.
Im still working on my scheduling program and Im thinking of how to get it where it dont add my agent until they actually leave for lunch and not just t the time they are "supposed" to. So sine my program sends emails Ive been thinking of making it where the agent replies with #lunch sh250080 and then when my program receives it it adds them to the lunch list.
I have a text box in the MainWindow. I was wondering how I can access it from another window. I tried declaring an instance of the MainWindow but it doesn't work. Say I want to set the text in the MainWindow to something, in SecondWindow. How can I do that?
Would it be possible to add a .exe to my resources and when the user clicks a button on the form it will create a directory ( C:My apps ).then add the .exe from my resources and launch the .exe from that folder.
I have a program that is getting pretty big and it is a pain to find everything through all the functions and classes. I am trying to break it up into other files based on their method. Some of these functions have calls to others in the main class. I changed most my functions from private to public to access this. I had problems calling certain code created windows so importing mainwindow helped that. My last problem is editing the mainwindow ui from one of the module files. I want to make sure im on the right page before i continue breaking it up. My only guess is that anything they updates the ui should be left on the main class.
I am new to WPF and the MVVM design pattern this month, and more than a little out of practice in general. To learn, I've been playing around with textboxes, rectangles, and ways to display them in a window. I began with Ashley Davis' excellent "Simple Drag Selection in WPF" tutorial, which walks through creating a view model for a collection of rectangles, binding a listbox to said collection, and styling the listbox with a canvas, creating a data template for the rectangles, as well as basic "rubber band" selection logic.
I have since built on this tutorial to improve the drag selection so that it behaves much more like selection does in windows explorer, and to allow resizing the rectangles from the corners or edges. All was well until I changed the MainWindow.xaml in an effort to include a column on the side for various buttons and controls, thus moving the "editor surface" grid from inside a 1x1 grid on the main window to a column of a 1x2 grid, moving the data template to the grid's resources (since it will be the only element in the window that needs it). As soon as I did this, subroutines that I wrote which interact with the listbox started misbehaving--rubber band selection no longer works. There's no visual indication that listbox items are being selected (they were highlighted previously), and interrogating listBox.SelectedItems.Count after a drag-selection mouseUp event returns a zero.
After some experimentation, reading many questions on this site and sections of my WPF Unleashed book, and going over the msdn databinding overview, as of this morning I still cannot find my mistake(s). I believe it is a data binding mistake or incorrect data context. Some details about the view models involved:
DataFieldViewModel
...implements INotifyPropertyChanged and exposes properties for its (in this case a rectangle and a textbox) X,Y position, width, height, visibility, and selection status (a way to track it across several rubber band selection operations)
PageViewModel
...implements INotifyPropertyChanged, and has among other things an ObservableCollection of type DataFieldViewModel, called DataFields, and exposes it as a ReadOnly Property. Here's a look at MainWindow.xaml.vb and one of the broken subs:
Namespace EditorUI ' ' The main window of the editor.
Basically, what I've done is given the user four tabs to choose from. The main one is the dictionary which I've compiled, and the other three tabs link to online encyclopedias and dictionaries. However, what I want to do is make an app for each of these, because of the fact that the screen space I am giving the user is limited (499px x 254px), and I also believe that it will look more professional.
What I'm thinking of doing is putting the logo towards the top, and then:For Wikipedia, putting the title and picture at the top and breaking the article into show/hide sections like the mobile version For Wiktionary, putting the title at the top, and breaking it down into show/hide sections when applicable For Dictionary.com. putting the title at the top and showing the definitions (with linked pronunciations) underneath
Of course, I'll need it to automatically redirect itself to the webpage I need it to go to, because I don't want to type another 300,000 lines of code just to go to a website.
what WPF based apps are?Is it an application that runs under Silverlight? If so, how?I know; Windows Forms based apps, console apps,DLL _ Class Library Projectsand I've had an introduction to ASP.Net.What I mostly want to know is, if WPF apps are for Silverlight then do they also run in a server based fashion like anASP.NET website would when you create ASP.Net webpages? Is it a way of creating what looks like a FORMS BASED application but it runs in a browser instead or what? Please enlighten me a bit further as I have no idea what WPF is all about.
I am looking for a way to make my app running in a single instance mode and showing the MainWindow of the first instance when another instance is launched.I do a quick search on the internet but I did'nt find anything to open the MainWindow of the first instance or it was for Windows Form not for WPF.
I am using an Application server for calling Oracle Reports and I have a URL to call the report. When the report is called the server converts it into PDF but when report contains large data it takes a lot of time to load. I want to do in asp.net that when I call the report url it opens the PDF file and copies it into the root of my web folder. The next time when I call the URL it opens the PDF file and creates a new PDF on backend for next call. I have made this function to download file
Basically, i am trying to determin if an application made for 1.x will run on a computer with just one copy of the .NET framework installed which is a higher version than what i am targetting, ie: it only has one copy of .NET 2.0, or 3.0, or 3.5 or 4.0 - has one copy of either of these and thats it, the hypothetical computer would not have 1.0 or 1.1 installed.
Usually when you right click on an application, and then click on properties, you can find the applications exe name. Such as, explorer.exe, mspaint.exe, and much much more. But I can't find the exe name of any of my apps.
If I control both applications, what is the best way to communicate between 2 exe's written in VB.Net. For example, I want to drop an XML file from one app, and pick it up with the other, but I do not want poll for the file. I've heard of named pipes, but I found it was complicated. What's the most effecient way to do this?
Private Sub startMySQLConsole() Dim parameterString As String parameterString = ""
[code]....
For some reason, it partially exists the program. The first letter of the line is starred (MySQL wants me to enter a password).I want to use get to mysql via the my app, which launches mysql.
I'm developing a media player app and upon looking at it for a week now, it seems really bland. I would really like to add some animations for it (besides just moving forms with x,y locations) but have no idea where to start.
Are more complex apps/designs/animations better suited for a language like c#/c++? I've never done animations before (except simple form moving) and I think now would be a great time to get some opinions!
You could probably say this would linger more so on 3d images and 3d animations
I've heard a lot about Mono but I have no idea what exactly it is or how to use it. All I know is it's aimed at making .NET apps cross platform. Could someone tell me or point me to some tutorials explaining how to port my vb code to run on other operating systems? Maybe shed some light on all of this?
I have a .NET application that was written in C# and VB.NET using WinForms. We want to slowly migrate this to something new, in many iterations. The new code will be entirely C# and WPF. We would like to utilize Prism.
As far as I know, we can't integrate the old WinForm app in Prism.
I am considering making my old app show the new app in certain instances. For example, when you press a tab in the old app, the new app opens on top of the old app, with the same tabs. Over time, only the new app would be necessary.
I'm looking to pick up a programming language. I've viewed some source code of both VB and C# and VB looks like something that I can pick up well.My question is can VB handle creating apps that will interact with the web? Things like signing me into accounts, downloading information, things of this sort?
Is it possible to create console apps like the Edit app in CMD with visual basic or C#? I want the program to respond to mouse input, have menubar, mssgboxes and windows.
Im trying to detect when numbers change in a 3rd party app and then capture them for crunching. I do recall something back in the days of vb5 that would list control info when the mouse hovered over it. Cant seem to find anything like it these days. Ive got window handles ok, just cant read the control data.
I am having a real issue deploying applications when the URL is not available.how to do updates when the URL is not available? I guess I could always put it in code within a try/catch and do it that way.
