My program is an executable, but if it is run I notice that I can click on the executable again and two instances will be running. How do you prevent more then one instance from running?

How do I do this?I tried checking if the form "is nothing" before showing it, but if I close it and then try to open it again it doesn't work.

View 2 RepliesI have a textbox1.textchanged event in my application.. so when I start typing into the textbox, it looks up the value of what I'm typing against a dataset. There is a datagrid in my application as well, and if i click a cell in the datagrid, it pastes a value into that textbox... when this happens, I don't want the textbox to do look up the value against the db.. I just want it to paste into the textbox without any further action..

Title pretty much says it all. Does anyone know a way to to prevent a computer from entering a low/non-processing mode while the program is running? I don't care about monitor modes, screen-savers, hard-drive spindown, etc (in fact, I'd prefer to leave those alone; I like it that it shuts the monitor off after a time period).Basically, I have an industrial program that needs to continually monitor a PCI card it uses for IO; and this activity alone isn't enough to convince Windows not to go into Sleep mode. We normally just shut the power-save features off, but we had an incident where a technician forgot, a customer's machine went to Sleep after the end of the shift, the pumps stopped recirculating, yadda-yadda big mess.
View 6 RepliesI'm wanting to add a some extra code within my application. My app is a single form that sets some environment variables before calling a one of two possible 3rd party executables to run. I have set via regedit the file association for files to open via my app but what I want to do is have my app check to see if either 3rd party app is already running. In short I'm trying to ensure either 3rd party app stays as a single instance.
If a user were to try an open another instance: 1) my application should simply terminate (no warnings, no msg boxes etc...) 2)the file that the user was trying to open should open within the existing instance of the 3rd party application. The problem is I don't quite know how to achieve both parts I imagine that this 'instance check' should happen as the first bit of code so that if no instance of either 3rd party app is found, then proceed with rest of my application. I have tested using some lines of code at the top of Sub New(). Here's what I have so far for checking for both 3rd party applications:

I try to develop a automation-add-in for Excel which can get some data from our SQL DB. So i call my add from an Excel-cell.. like "=getThisFromDb()"... This works totally fine! But what if i want to write to another cell then just give a return value? I managed to get the running instance of excel. I can read from it. I can open a new document in it and write to it. ->> But can't write to the Worksheet that called me!!

I have a single instance database app that emails out notifications. I would like to add a link in the emails that when clicked would open up the app and go to the section of the program that its supposed to go to. I implemented my own URL protocol so that links starting with my codewords get passed to my EXE. So far so good. I then parse the URL and pull the keyword and identifier out to open that section of the program. So if a user clicks a link like this:
MyApp:LoadCompany?ID=323
My application will start, it will grab the arguments (LoadCompany?ID=323), pass this to my load company routine and then load up company ID 323. Works great.
Now the issue is if the program is already open I still want the links to work but since it's a single instance app it just closes the second app. How can I add something ot the app to watch for this or receive a message from the second app? I know I will need to check status of what I'm doing and make sure things are saved, check security, etc but I can get all that done easily enough. I've found some examples online but none really did what I wanted them to.
I want to make a program that enables a game to have more than one instance running, where it would otherwise be unable to be done. How should I go about this? A sandbox? Hack?

My problem is that I want to know if an instance of my application is already running and, in that case, I want to jump directly to that instance, without starting another one. I tried several solutions found on the internet but I think there are solution for desktop applications not for mobile applications because I have a lot of errors.

The usual way of working with this is parsing command line arguments of the new instance and continue execution of the old instance. My code was very amateurish, but, as it was my very first publication, I was very happy with it. Only about a month after I'd published it did I realize I'd made a huge mistake in the code.
I've only ever connected to a specific named instance of SQL Server, and it occurred to me that, if the SQL Server instance has a different name than the one I specified, it wouldn't work.
So, since my users will probably not know what the name of the instance of SQL Server that's running is, I thought adding a field where the user can specify it would help if they do, but what if they don't? My answer was to get the local instance, regardless of name.
I tried Data Source=.local;, Data Source=.; and other variants, but nothing worked.

I am trying to write a Windows Script that will allow me to monitor the following: That 2 x seperate but specific processes within Component Services "Running Processes" list are currently running and have not reset within the past hour. If I already know the PID, then I can retrieve the CreationDate (I assume which I can use to check for restarts? or is this the actual process creation/installation date) for each specific process, however if a restart occurs the PID will change and my script needs to know what the new PID is without me telling it!
