If the application is already running, and someone tries to launch it again, set the focus on the already-running program, and exit the one recently launched. I found this, but I don't know how to get the already-running process hwnd. It should be

But that doesn't work.
When I run my application and click the exit button, in debug mode I can still see my application running. How can I stop this? I don't want to forcefully end the application, I would like to find out what section of code is still running so I can end that instead abruptly ending the program.

View 3 Repliesi have this line of code to catch an exception if a letter is inputed, or if it is out of rang as a number, but I have added WHEN to avoid catching numberical data. Now how can I use an exception error to use it before my case statement in order to avoid running the code twice, cause once the case codes has been through it will run a clear txtbox which is already taken care by the try catch, don`t if thats clear for you but i understand it. here is the code in parts...

I'm not asking how to exit the program( dispose() ) instead I have a program that checks if a certain process is running and if so it displays a message box, stops the process and (Should) exit the program. If the process is not detected then the program loads normally and opens an external program. My problem is that it stops the process and still runs the program. How can I fully stop the code and exit my program?

My program is an executable, but if it is run I notice that I can click on the executable again and two instances will be running. How do you prevent more then one instance from running?
View 4 RepliesI'm wanting to add a some extra code within my application. My app is a single form that sets some environment variables before calling a one of two possible 3rd party executables to run. I have set via regedit the file association for files to open via my app but what I want to do is have my app check to see if either 3rd party app is already running. In short I'm trying to ensure either 3rd party app stays as a single instance.
If a user were to try an open another instance: 1) my application should simply terminate (no warnings, no msg boxes etc...) 2)the file that the user was trying to open should open within the existing instance of the 3rd party application. The problem is I don't quite know how to achieve both parts I imagine that this 'instance check' should happen as the first bit of code so that if no instance of either 3rd party app is found, then proceed with rest of my application. I have tested using some lines of code at the top of Sub New(). Here's what I have so far for checking for both 3rd party applications:

I try to develop a automation-add-in for Excel which can get some data from our SQL DB. So i call my add from an Excel-cell.. like "=getThisFromDb()"... This works totally fine! But what if i want to write to another cell then just give a return value? I managed to get the running instance of excel. I can read from it. I can open a new document in it and write to it. ->> But can't write to the Worksheet that called me!!
View 2 RepliesI have a single instance database app that emails out notifications. I would like to add a link in the emails that when clicked would open up the app and go to the section of the program that its supposed to go to. I implemented my own URL protocol so that links starting with my codewords get passed to my EXE. So far so good. I then parse the URL and pull the keyword and identifier out to open that section of the program. So if a user clicks a link like this:
MyApp:LoadCompany?ID=323
My application will start, it will grab the arguments (LoadCompany?ID=323), pass this to my load company routine and then load up company ID 323. Works great.
Now the issue is if the program is already open I still want the links to work but since it's a single instance app it just closes the second app. How can I add something ot the app to watch for this or receive a message from the second app? I know I will need to check status of what I'm doing and make sure things are saved, check security, etc but I can get all that done easily enough. I've found some examples online but none really did what I wanted them to.

I'm having a bit of a problem getting my application to close properly. Basically I have one main form from which all other forms open. If a user tries to close that main form, I want to bring up a MessageBox asking if they want to exit the application.However, when I try to do that it asks the question twice. It seems that the Application.Exit() is triggering the FormClosing event again for some reason, but I don't know of another way to exit the application. BTW, the main form isn't the startup form so I can't use the option to close when the startup form closes.
View 9 RepliesNow I have a sub to validate a bunch of textboxes and combo boxes.I previously used many IF statements to validate and pop up different messageboxes and Exit Sub in every IF statement.But I heard that too many Exits will decrease the efficiency and they were not recommended to use. Instead, nested IF is better because it will let the process naturally go to the end.Then I found out that if I use nested IF,it will be hard to read, since messageboxes are all separated from conditions.

My problem is that I want to know if an instance of my application is already running and, in that case, I want to jump directly to that instance, without starting another one. I tried several solutions found on the internet but I think there are solution for desktop applications not for mobile applications because I have a lot of errors.

The program is intended to be a lightweight version of a larger program, intended to perform a couple of very specific tasks without requiring all the initialization required in the larger program.To this end, I am planning on using Me.Startup in applicationevents to process the command line options and determine if the Startup form should be displayed or not. In the case where the startup form should not be displayed, what is the method to close the application from within Me.Startup Application.Exit, Me.Close, and others are not available from within Me.Startup. My searches online have shown that I can use e.ApplicationExit() from Me.UnhandledException, but this method is also not available from Me.Startup.if anyone has any better ideas on how to accomplish what I am trying to do, those comments are always welcome.
