Programming An Application That Detects It's Instalation On Other PC?

I have a small network of PCs and I want build an application in order to manage a database. Every user will have his own instalation on his PC. How can I make those aplication to detect the computers in the network, and to detect and interact with the program installed on the other PCs (update records from the instances installed on other computers, add new records to the database from the other computer etc). Where do I start? Is there any book that specifies that?

I have one problem, I created application that I needed and then created that .exe file (publish). After I install that application i get that default blue-white icon...Is there any way to change that? I use VB 2005

In a WPF application I have specified a class variable with an associated property that will automatically initialise the variable the first time is it accessed.
However after all the values that will be put into it have been added, and the window opens, the if statement that is supposed to check to see if the variable needs initialising appears to get bypassed, and the variable is re-initialised, thus deleting the information that was in there.

I'm currently having some trouble getting an If statement to work. I want the statement to do its thing when it detects a form is not open. this might sound a bit confusing this is what i mean:

I'm trying to learn how to do some very simple client-server application programming.
Basically, I want to make a program (the server) that listens and waits, and when a commend is sent it will run a batch file or execute a line of code.
The client will just ask for the ip and send the command when a button is pushed.
Shouldn't be too hard right? So what are some good resources that you've used to get started?

I want to make a program that detects the note that is being played in front of the microphone. I am testing the FFT function of Naudio, but with the tests that I did in audacity it seems that FFT does not detect the pitch correctly. I played an C5, but the highest pick was at E7.I changed the first dropdown box in the frequency analysis window to "enchanced autocorrelation" and after that the highest pick was at C5.

I'm trying to write a program that detects the contents inside a textbox, and if empty displays a warning, and does not input anything into a rich text box. However, if something is detected, it would not display the warning and input the textbox's text into the rtb.
I got everything else, just need help with the textbox detection code.

I have a vb.net windows application that i am using, i have embedded a shockwave flash file in one of the forms, in the development enviornment everything works fine. Then I am using the setup and deployment to create a "msi" it automatically detects that the shockwave flash is a dependency for my project and adds the required dll.Once it has created the msi, and i run it on a new machine, the software gets installed, but the flash component inside the form dosent work. is there something special i need to do for that dll?

I'm having some wierd problems with my Looping. I'm was using a thread to start a looping routine to sample the keyboard for pressed keys. The loop worked fine when I made a call to it from the thread in my form load routine. However when I just made a call to the samplekeys routine without using the thread my application will freeze and it won't load.I'm making the call in the form load routine. Private KeyThread As NewThreading.Thread(AddressOf SampleKeys)hen start the thread in the form loading procedure , but if I just make a direct call to the samplekey routine without using a thread my application freezes.Here is the the thread don't think there is a problem with it.

I have a program that speaks wave files. This works problemless with the Soundplayer class with the following code:
Sub MyPlayWav(ByVal WavFileName As String, ByVal StartPos As Long, ByVal EndPos As Long)

wp.SoundLocation = WavFileName
wp.Play
End sub
The soundplayer does however not seem to have a method to play the wave from position StartPos to position EndPos and achieving just that would mean quite a reduction in downloads of these files.
The soundplayer does have a stream object, and that does have a seek method, suggesting that there might be a way to accomplish this, but how?
I plan to include other media files as I am developping the project, and I guess I will be confronted with the same problem.

a friend of mine wants to create a simple inventory database that can be deployed on the web.He has had a lot of experience with Database tools like Paradox. Moreover he has experience with writing Macros and programs with Basic, and even a bit of C++ experience. He uses Windows and Mac OS X, though mostly Windows.
If the requirement of having a web application wasn't there I would recommend MS Access.

Iam developing a Windows application using Visual Basic 2008 with a SQL Server database. Throughout the program I give the user as many options as possible and have no problem with either the database or the windows forms. The program does not initially require a Login and I want toprovide the User with the opportunity to add a Login to the system. The default Login form is perfectly satisfactory.
The problem is that I can't figure out how to program the change sothat the Login from isopens the program rather then th form designated as the StartUp form. this forum I am able to prgrammatically change the form but I can't figure out how to make the requirement a permanent factor. I tried using a Constant, but if the User wants to change, you can't change the constant. Its an apparantly simple yes/no situation but if I set a varable to yes and then change it to no the next time the program runs, the change will be lost.

I avidly create games in VB.net. Being a hobby programmer I give my games away for free. Since I'm a hobbiest without formal training I do try and educate myself on proper programming principles and follow them when programming such as OOP. There are however some things I have obviously missed being self-taught that perhaps I would know if I were formally educated. Once such issue that has really been my bane is how different classes (from now on referred to as objects) 'know' about each other WITHOUT programming specific interaction.
Okay imagine this, you have a space game and the following objects

Now each one of these objects has a Health, X,Y and Z private members and properties that are all inherited from clsSpaceEntity for argument sake. Now one way of programming collision between them would be to code out the following logic in the main game loop

Now this might seam okay if your talking about the simple example above but some of my games have tens or even HUNDREDS of objects that interact in this basic way. Is there a way in OOP to do the following... for each thing that inherits from clsSpaceEntity check against every other object that inherits this type (except itself) and if they collide then reduce health next? This sort of ability for a type of objects/class or whatever to be 'aware' of another and how they are the same/different and interact would save me tonnes and tonnes and TONNES of coding.

im using tasks parallel library in .net 4.0 i want to have the ability to specify a task for each core independant of the other cores. usually in TPL, i create a task and i tell it to run in parallel, i have no control over the number of threads created nor can i control the number of cores to participate in the parallel task. also, i cant specify each particular core a different task.i'd like to know how to achieve this in TPL if it is possible.

I have been reading up on the parallel programming and even now still a little confused on the whole concepts. Lets say I have a single project with about 5 classes that interact and have local variables in methods and variables accessible to all methods in a single class and even 1 or 2 variables accessible to all classes accessed through instantiation. Now using threads I know that global variables would be overridden by multiple threads if there were no locking applied but local variables to a method/function do not, right?
So if I ran the project multiple times meaning as a new process, the methods and variables would be thread safe right and no data corruption occurs? So to implement parallel programming using the task factory, if I created a project that basically creates tasks and each task is basically running an instance of another project, then shouldn't the variables and data be thread safe and safe from corruption? But what if I had the output files and they named by Output & datetime.now.tostring, would there be conflict issues and I ask this knowing that I have seen this happen when trying it. [Code]
