I have formatted my PC recently and I installed VB.NET 2008 on it. When I open a project, and when I want to view the form designer; the message shown down pops-up. Iv'e re-installed VB.NET but the problem seems to be persist. This is the first time I ever get this error message. Is there any solution for such problem?
View 2 RepliesI installed VS 2005 Beta 2 on a WinXP pro system (numerous times). It finally installed without erreors. It looks like it is basically working - I can create a new windows project and add items from the toolbox, edit the code etc. If I open an existing project (created on another box) things load properly but I cannot open any forms in designer view (I can open them in code view). When I attempt to open a form in design view I get the following error popup:=====================There is no editor available for 'c:....myForm.vb'.Make sure the application for the file type (.vb) is installed.
View 12 RepliesI am running VS 2010 Professional and have a solution with 3 VB projects in it. I can open the forms in 2 of the projects just fine but if I try to open any of the forms in the 3rd project I get a message saying "There is no editor available for .....Form1.vb. Make sure the application for file type (.vb) is installed". Everything was working fine last month and I could open any of the forms.
Again the problem is limited to just the 1 project in the solution.
My Visual Studio 2008 seems to be corrupted. I can not use the Windows Forms designer. I get an error about: "Make sure the application for the file type (.vb) is installed." Also, under menu item Tools>Options, it says "an error occurred loading this property page" when I try to look at the options for 'Data UI Customization' under 'Windows Forms Designer'

For example Dim aInt as Integer should have the value as nothing instead of 0.

View 1 RepliesI'm using VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008 in a Vista 64-bit OS. I'm trying to find an easy way (there must be one) to quickly retrieve from the registry the application file name and path to use in a Shell command to open a particular file. Specifically, I want the user in my app to be able to click on a PDF file and have the app open that PDF file using the application associated with PDF file types - Acrobat Reader, for example. Anyone have any suggestions as to proper coding & syntax for the following sequence?:
(1) Get name of .exe file associated with .pdf file type (most likely from the HKey Root Classes hive)
(2) Get path for the .exe file
(3) Shell("[pathname]appname.exe filename.pdf")
I've spent a couple of hours looking through the forums and haven't found what I'm looking for.
I want to include an optional parameter in a function statement that is of the type Unit. For example:
Public Shared Function NewTable(Optional ByVal TableWidth As Unit) As Table
Optional parameters require a default value, but I cannot figure out how to set a default value for a Unit type.
how I can go about having a ini type file so my.settings don't get over written when I load newer versions of my application?
View 3 RepliesWhat is the best way to set the default value for 'bit' or boolean data types in SQL express? I am using the data base explorer in VB Express 2008 and the only way I seem to be able to do it is by using ((0)) for false and ((1)) for true.

View 1 RepliesThis is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?
I have XML files I am trying to read and import. I have XSD files and have used the XSD.exe tool to create classes for the elements found in the XML files. The problem I have having is that the same file structure can be used for different "message types" (different data structures for different purposes). Because of this, the structure of the file is roughly this:
<Envelope>
<BatchID>SomeNum</BatchID>
<Messages>
[code]....
Where the Order element is, it could be one of a few different element types in the message based on the message type. Currently, I'm trying to read an order file.The XSD tool created all the classes fine but it creates an 'Item' object for that inner element and makes it one of the other strong types during the deserialization, so I end up with something like:
Envelope.Messages(0).Item
Item is just an object and is not strongly typed until the deserialization happens. If I look at the data in Item in a watch window during debugging, it shows it is the strongly typed class and has all the data in the members I would expect to see, but I can't seem to access them by name or set an instance of the strongly typed Order class equal to the Item object. Any attempts I've made so far to read the data have resulted in the "No default member found for type 'Order'" error.
Im trying to set one variable equal to another but it says "No default member found for type 'Decimal'" what does that mean?Both the varuables are deciamls, one is a regular decimal that I declare in the sub and another is an array that I declare in the class. The line is:
tempx = xo(i)
this is in a for loop with i as the variable.
I'm having a problem with converting from one source type to a destination type. I have a form with 2 buttons (button 2 uses the OpenFileDialog to have the user open an excel file set to NewFile),(button 1 takes the contents from specific cells in NewFile and arranges them how I need into oXLApp1).
The error I get is "Unable to cast object of type 'System.IO.FileStream' to type 'Excel.Application'." in line 14 of the code below.
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click

View 2 RepliesI want to set my application to as the default program to open a .txt file. How can I do this? A link to a tutorial is ok too.. couldn't find any.
The biggest is obstacle is, how does my application know which file the user wants to open?
I know, how I can change the default icon of an application in the designer.
But I want to know, if there is any way to change the default app icon with code.
I already change the Me.Icon, but this has only effect on the main form and not on the exe.
How do I get the default names of the files that I opened? For example, I just opened a MP3 file and the default program is windows media player. How do I get the name of the default program? I do not wish to have the file type.
View 2 RepliesI am using VB 08 running an openfiledialogue wanting to get the result of the GDS file (*.gds) to be the default extension at the drop down menu instead of All file when the openfiledialogue box opens.
I coded it with:

but the results i get in the open file dialogue box remains as all files being in the drop down menu as the default file extension. How to i set it to ".gds" format?
