I'm trying to create a program that produces random sentences as output. With five arrays of strings, one each for nouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositions, and articles. Each array should hold several words for that part of speech. Like, the Articles array could hold the strings "the" and "a"; the Nouns array could hold "Martian", "baby", "skunk","computer" and "mosquito"; the Prepositions array could hold "around", "through", "under", "over", and "by"; and so on.
It's supposed to generate sentences by randomly choosing eight words (randomly generating eight array indices) from these arrays, always constructing sentences by using the parts of speech in the following order: article, adjective, noun, verb, preposition, article, adjective, noun. Also, the code should be properly modularized so that the code to generate each part of speech is not repeated.
I'm watching tutorials about creating Web Site and about controls.I think I added SQL Database to the project (it's not empty) properly. Suppose it has two columns: FirstName, LastName.I have TextBox1, TextBox2 and Button1 on the web site form.I enter any integer number (5, 10, 15 or whatever) into TextBox1. I want to press Button1 and get a value of 5th person (10th, 15th or whatever) from SQL Database into TextBox2.Who can help me with that? In my VB6 programs (internal to our organzation) I have always liked taking screenshots upon the occurence of an error to give me more clues as to its cause but somehow I have read somewhere that it may be in violation to some law (privacy / data protection).In the project I am currently developing and it will be for marketing I have used the same method but upon reading about the warning I am now somehow hesitant to use it although it has proved useful in the past.
View 16 RepliesI am wondering how I can select and pull specific bits of data from a block of information a user pastes into a textbox. For example, the information has fixed words and is always in the same format, but the numbers relating to the words may be different. One report might say, for example, Cars: 1.176 and another may say Cars: 863. How do I pull the information about the "cars" from a the block of text with the number value even though it can be different each time?
I must note that there are many many of these scattered throughout the average report and I need to pull the values of each of them in a single click, then paste those values into a different area on the form.
I am making a booking system. I am using same form for insertion and updation. How can I update by taking the values from the textboxes. For example if the user enters value for just 2 out of 8 fields then How can i update just 2 fields without affecting the rest of the record. I mean to say that if I use a single update query using all the fields then if some textbox is left empty then it will replace the database field value by null or something else.

I have DataGridView in which I add rows and columns dependent on a certain record count of geospatial data that is held in ArcGIS. The data is then passed through to the gridview for editing. So I do not use any databinding methods, rather it is a very manual process. I store data into a two-dimensional arrays, which indexes are based off of those certain data record counts. After the loops are complete, the data should be stored in each cell dependent on index. The very last row that was populated is populated perfectly, yet the other 72 (or so) rows are blank. I'm creating a windows application using visual studio. My code is in visual basic. I want to enter a "Browse" button where the user will click on it and select an excel file from his computer. Then,for each column of the excel file, I want to create an arraythat will contain the same data with the column.Only the first sheet will be necessary and it will have specific number of collumns. I won't know the number of the rows, I will be needing a counter for these as well. My object is to have these data as arrays and to be able to make some calculations.

Will an array collect data from text boxes (I also want to display the 8 pieces of information in separate boxes). also how would I save the text file so I can open it again or open a different text file (database?), from within the program?
EDIT: I see I need to use readline and writeline to read/write from a text file but how would I find specific data to show in my boxes?

i noticed {|} this is the format that vb.net uses for arrays, i was wondering if that's an ok way to store things, on retrieval once i get the node value, what would be the best way to break up the {value1|it's partner value2} variables to use, explode the | and get parts (0) and (1)?
In VB6 I load a recordset containg all of the records (6 fields per record)in a table into an XArray and then manipulate the records in the array and then write them back to the original table. The array issorted by the first field (1 to maybe 8000 or more) I need to find records in the array by an ID field and then move them (because of some external criteria that happens many times) from say number 400 to number 375. Then all of the other records between 375 and 399 were renumbered up 1 to fill the gaps left by the move.
The XArray worked well as it could find and also move to a next record easily to facilitate the revisions to each record quickly. Everything is done in VB6 in code and nothing visual needs to be shown to the user until say 2000 of these external changes are complete. What is the best, most efficient way to do this in the .Net framework in VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. tableadapters, arrays. enums ?

I have a VB.net console app and I am opening a function in a dll written in fortran. I am passing 3 arrays through the function by reference. When they come back out the otherside they ahve all tunred to arrays of only one element And that element is 0.I read on the internet somewhere that when doing this kind of thing it is a good idea to only pass the first element of the array into the function.I tried changing my function declaration to accepting single elements rather than single dimensional arrays, and now the arrays are the same length before and after the function call, but they don't seem to be changing at all, so i'm not sure that this is working

I want to be able to have the selected items repopulate as selected if the user reopens the web page.What I've tried:I've pulled the items selected previously back to a hidden list box which works but I can't figure out how to compare what is in that list box with all the items contained in the checkbox list (this is being populated by another seperate table in the db)I've tried just a straight query and used reader but keep getting errors about cast and if I switch it to a GetDecimal, when I try to see what it's pulling, it's not the data but maybe the index: See below:Does anyone out there have a sample of can help me figure out how to just have this stupid checkbox list reselect the items that the user previously selected and saved to the db?

I have a database table of company information.It's about 50 records and contains things like company id, company name, address, phone number, shipping rate1, shipping rate2,etc.I want to load that table into a structure that I can quickly search within my code.I want to search by id to find the company, and then use the company's data to update some records.My lazy way has always been to add a listbox for each piece of data, then do an indexof on the id, then access the same index on the other listboxes.[code]

Instead of showing read data in datagridview, i'd want to read the data from xml file into one dimensional array: X(Impedances) Or is there a way to read value from this datatable into string variable without getting data from datagridview? The point is: i'd want to scan through all "Impedance" values (which are read from xml file) and compare with value y to catch the nearest value to y. How to do that?
