Toolbox And Properties Windows Are Empty
Oct 9, 2009
This just started happening yesterday. When I open the toolbar or properties windows (I have them pinned to the sides) there's nothing in them. I thought it was a setting that had been altered, but when I closed VS and re-opened it, they were there again. But now it's happening today and they're empty even if I reload. When I open the toolbar bar it just says 'There are no usable controls in this group...' (that's the general group, i.e there are no controls at all).

I am running Visual Basic 2008 express edition. My controls toolbox is empty. There are also no properties for the form controls on my project. Just blank. I have removed the .net framework v2.0. I had the .net framework v3.5 installed at the time, and thought I didn't need the older version (v2.0). Do I need v.2.0 for the tools? If so, where can I get a copy? What's the filename called?

I installed with Windows 7 64-bit release candidate and am unable to add the Windows Media Player com component to my toolbox. When I select choose items and go to the com tab, it doesn't show up, actually there are considerably less com components in there altogether.I don't know if this is a Windows 7 issue, or a 64-bit issue. I tried browsing to wmp.dll to add it manually and it says "self-registration for c:windowssystem32wmp.dll failed".I've searched this error and came up with practically nothing.I have not had this problem when I used Vista 32-bit or Windows XP.

This illustration shows how I'm trying to get 2 vb.net user controls into the toolbox to use on a c# form. In toolbox Select Items I see the items checked but clicking OK or Reset doesn't make them appear in the toolbox. How do I do that? somehow the controls appeared in the Toolbox, but they're greyed out and unavailable.

I just installed Visual Basic 2005. I am having problems registering the windows media player on my toolbox.I followed the instructions on Article 821767 titled "How to play audio files using Visual Basic .NET or Visual Basic 2005", and selected the msdxm.ocx COM component. I keep getting a "Self-registration for C:WindowsSystem32msdxm.tlb failed" message.
I am using Windows VISTA and I have installed SP1 for VS2005. The VS2005 is run as Administrator.

I want to insert a Windows Media Player object in my Form, but I have not the control on my Toolbox.
I have done the steps:
Right-click
the Toolbox -> Choose item -> COM Components -> add Windows Media Player component
(which references to C:WindowsSystem32wmp.dll)
But there is not the control on my Toolbox.
In my project references I see "MediaPlayer" into "Imported namespaces" and it is checked. In the references window it is also present "Windows Media Player". Where is the error?

I've got a Windows Services app I've deployed and I've used the System.ServiceProcess.ServiceInstaller to set the StartType to Automatic.
How do I set the action on failure to "restart" and the wait time to one minute?
Can't find those properties but if you open up a Service's properties in the UI, there's a Recovery Tab with First Failure, Second Failure etc. and a "Restart service after __ minutes"
Where do I set these properties for my service at design time before deploying?

For a reason I cannot explain, I now get compiler errors from the Application Designer whenever I enable the application framework in the VB.net IDE. I do not find much on this issue, except Scott Hanselman's admonition not to use this feature. I have mature projects in which this feature was enabled, but now even they will not compile. As this only began a few days ago, I have been trying various approaches to resolving the problem, up to and including removing VS2005 and reinstalling it, along with the framework, SDK, and all updates. No dice. The errors are below. This condition will occur even if I enable the feature in a new project.Does anyone have some thoughts and the cause and resolution of this problem?I probably should mention that I was using both VS2005 and VS2008 on this computer. I had been experimenting with 2008 for several weeks without incident.

I've implemented the localization in my windows application with no problem for the label or command button which have a fixed text.
My problem is related to the label which text is merged with some variables or object properties.
E.g.: vb label1.text = "There are " & myDataGridView.Rows.Count.ToString() & " items"
So, how can I set (if it's possible) the localization for these labels? I've this kind of assignment in modules and not in the form. It's possible to set a resources file also for modules?

I have a DataGridView that has some columns with dates. It binds to an in-memory Datatable which gets loaded from an string array of data passed back from the backend Some of the rows returned have nulls for the date columns. Solution 1: If I define the Date column in the DataTable as "string" I can easily convert those nulls to empty strings and display it in the grid as empty strings (desired results). However, if the user clicks on the date column header to sort by date, it doesn't order the rows as you want. You get a purely string sort order. Not acceptable

So I was wondering if anyone has done their own Forms (inheriting windows form and editing the properties) and if so, what your finished result was. And, if you are willing to post a screenshot of your finished result, that would be sweet! Trying to get some ideas of what can be accomplished with customizing the default form.

I'm making a control and I am trying to finalize my design time properties grid. I have several List(of Class) items as public properties and when I click on the design time menu (while testing the control) there is the word "Collection" and a button with an ellipsis (...) that brings up a neat pop up with the buttons Add/remove and all of the public properties of the collection's class on the right hand side. Basically for a non-collection instance of a class (with public properties) I'd like a similar button to show up. I know I could put all of the properties in the main control class and group them, but I like the pop up box feature. Anyway to duplicate this? (think font grid item etc.)

In the form design I set up a TableLayoutPanel, 20x20 cells and in cell (1,1) a PictureBox (called Target) containing the image of a small target. The properties box for Target shows some very promising properties, Column and Row - and if you overwrite the values in the properties box, the PictureBox obligingly shifts to the corresponding cell position in th design. However in VB it is not possible to refer to Me.Target.Row or .Column - neither appears during coding in the menu of properties, and deliberately coding either of them produces an error like
Error 1 'row' is not a member of 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'.
1. Why does the properties box show properties that cannot be altered programmatically?
2. How can my program move Target around in the TableLayoutPanel?
