The concept is that a file that'll work more-or-less like a database. One can add, edit, view, delete and query data to and from the file. The file, either cannot be opened directly or data inside the file should be in some encrypted form so that even if the file is opened no one can comprehend it. The application has other functionality as well.If the user searchs for a previous record that has been stored in the Access Database, I query the Database (SELECT ... ) using an OLEDB Connection and then display the records on a Datagrid on my Form. Everything is working fine, however, the Column Headings of the Datagrid are the Field Names in my Database (FirstName, LastName,...) rather than Caption Values (First Name, Last Name,... )
I tried looking up the net, but most of the topics addressing a similar problems use DAO, and I understand that it is not completely supported in VB .NET. I am fairly new to VB .NET and I am not quite sure how to address the problem or where I am going wrong. i write a program using vb 2005. This program collects data from Flight Simulator 2004 (altitude, speed, etc). These data should be uploaded periodically (every 10 secs) to a database which is installed to my website. The problem is that my hosting provider doesn't allow remote access to the database. Is there any way to put that data into the database?
ps. The strange with all the above is that i run a shareware program that can upload data collected from the flight to my database by simply adding the database name, user ir and password.

View 3 RepliesI'm currently designing a client application that connects to a SQL Server 2005 database. My app is being used to display data, allows users to run reports and stats on the data. It is being developed using VB2008. Within my VB2008 project, the connection string to the DB is made via SQLEXPRESS.
The road block that I'm running into right now is that it only allows me to connect to a local DB file (.mdf) only. I tried to connect to a different DB file on a server within the same network domain, and it generated the following error:
"The file "U:Data.mdf" is on a network path that is not supported for database files. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file U:Data.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (where U: is a mapped network drive).
Below is the actual connection string in my code:
"SERVER=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=U:Data.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
The intention is to have the DB reside on a server, where there is another application that runs as a service to collect the data and then populates this DB. Then my app would just connect to the database, and allows users to run reports based on the data in the DB.
I heard that this is the limitation of SQLEXPRESS: it will not allow connection to a remote database. This is true? If so, is there anyway that I can get around this limitation?
The main reason that I chose SQLEXPRESS in the first place is that because of the licensing issue. The company that I work for do not want to make the users of our software app have to purchase additional license for the full-blown SQL Server Enterprise edition. I also heard that SQL Server Enterprise edition does allow you to connect to a remote DB (.mdf) file.

I have two Access database, say database One.mdb and Two.mdb. I want to use VB2005 to export tblCustomer from One.mdb to Two.mdb, and replace the existing tblCustomer in Two.mdb, during run time. I basically want to simulate the export function that is available in MS Access (which can export one table from one Access database to another) with VB2005 during run time. I can think of a way by querying the table to a dataset and then delete everything on the other database before filling the table in that database with the dataset. However, there should be something simpler and faster than that, shouldn't it? Any idea?

I want to connect to a Access Database I've tried to do it though Data Binding and that doesn't seem to be working so I'm going to have to do this through Code... every book I have tells you how to do it with SQL Server but can't find a example for Access that doesn't involve just using the databinding tool. Writing the queries isn't a issue it's just connecting to the database and then putting that data into a couple of text boxes. Lets say the database is called TestData and the table is ClientInfo and we want to put Date, First, Last into txtBox 1, 2 and 3 respectively when the form loads.

View 3 RepliesI have an Access data base back end that contains only the tables that was created in the year 2005 (by someone no longer here so cannot answer much about past and I am not very familiar with Access). When I use SSMA 2005 for Access v4.0 to migrate to SQL 2005 a table with images (defined as OLE Object) the ones that appear in the Access table as bitmap will work fine, there are ones that appear in the Access table as "Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 Photo" or "Picture" that will not. I set up a data source and used tableadapters in a VB Windows Form and used data binding by dragging the column from the data table and dropping it on a predefined picture box on the form (this basic method works fine for all the other columns in the table). I am using Visual Studio 2008.

OK, before I throw my laptop out the window... I need to insert data into my Access Database from my VB.Net2005 application. I have written and re-written this code, trying everything I can find from the web and I've had no luck. I'm getting a {"Data type mismatch in criteria expression."} error on the ExecuteNonQuery line - I'm fairly certain that it's the DateTimePickers, as I rem them out and the code works fine. However, I've tried everything - changed the column in my database to Text, changed the .Value to .Text, .Value.ToLongDateString, and every time I'm getting the same error. One of the things I read on line was that I need to use parameters in order to pass the DateTime - I need to pass the Date and Time (date format is not important, but I require the hh:mm:ss format for the time). The fields currently default to the current date/time which is perfect, but I read that depending on how you pass the data, you may run into problems if the user does not pick the drop box (leaving it as the default).
