I've been trying several methods to simulate a scrolling news ticker on an application. There is a lot of activity within the program, so I need to keep the ticker on a seperate thread.I have made a timer which when a tick is hit (in this case, every 100ms), executes a sub which removes one character from a label to simulate the ticker. This works quite well, although when the program does something else the ticker freezes up momentarily. I am wondering if someone could give me some advice on the best way to eliminate these freeze ups? How could I execute a new thread every 100ms to move the ticker? I was thinking of somehow using a threadpool for each time the a tick is hit on the timer, but I'm not sure how, or even if this can be accomplished.

I am trying to open an excel file and write to it as data becomes availableI can create an instance of excel and write to the selected worksheet once. But, I can't seem to write back to the existing file. I keep on getting a null reference error when I try to send new data to the file.The function I am using will run once, but when it returns to the main form, I lose the values of xlApp and xlWorksheet. It appears that going in to the function makes the original values null.

I want to implement the auto recovery feature in my application. i.e auto recovery of data from power failure, system crash,etc. Since the program is an multiuser with different access levels to each user, I want to save the data in a file which can only be recognized by the program. I don't want to save the data in the db, as there are many modules in which this feature has to implemented, which will make me create an separate table for each module, for temporary storage.

How would I use the BinaryWriter to append binary data to a file that is very large? Say a file that is 3GB in size. The BinaryWriter's write method will only accept an integer for the index value. I've attached a screen shot of what I'm talking about. If I were to enter a value that exceeds the size of an integer on my 32bit Windows XP system, which I believe is 2147483647 it will reject it right?

So i tried using a txt file with just a few characters, and I got the same error. I read where someone said to make sure you have all streams closed and I checked this and do so I'm not sure what to try now. Here is my code.

I have a small database program that gets data from csv file, I created a function that formats the font color of textboxes based on dates and values.
CODE:
I place this in text changed event and I have a problem implementing it, because the date conversion will not take place until the data is loaded. The second part works but not the first(Date) part.
I can create a button and use its click event to format the text boxes just fine, however i wanted the text boxes to be formatted on the fly . The problem is no matter where i call the function the date conversion wont work.

I'm reading a file into a buffer using the Space function. Then I'm using blowfish dll's to encrypt it, and want to write the encrypted data to a txt file. (I realize you can use .NET cryptography classes, but I need to use these old blowfish dll's for this project.) Anyway, when when I encrypt the data in the buffer, I can see all encrypted data, but when I write it out to a file, I get a few lines of encrypted data and the rest of plain text.

' BLOCK_SIZE is a const which = 2048
sBlock = Space(BLOCK_SIZE)
Using sr As StreamReader = New StreamReader(FileToEncrypt)
sBlock = sr.ReadToEnd()

I would like to know the best, or standard, way to accomplish real-time client updates in a small multi-user application using an access data table as a data source.
Specifically, this application will be used by 3-4 people. It uses a datatable which is filled on form load and bound to a datagrid at design time. The datatable is stored on a shared drive. The data table on the shared drive is updated in two ways:
1) Users can update the datagrid which then updates the datatable on the shared drive via the data adapter's Update method.
2) A server application does some work on some text files, periodically updating the data table.
I need the clients to reflect the changes to the data table on the shared drive as closely to real-time as possible. I know that the data table stored in memory on the client is disconnected from the data table on the shared drive, so I must query again to get the updates.
I have two questions:
1) Is there an alternvative model I can use which is connected, and which will automatically reflect the updates in the data table on the shared drive?
2) If not, what is the best way to check for changes in the data table (so I can know when to call the data adapter fill method)? I am planning to poll the drive for a change to the .mdb file, raise an event and then fill the data adapter when the event is triggered. I am using this method successfully now to check for changes to a text file in another application, and I know how to implement it

Our application is using VBSQL.OCX on Sql server 2000 to create temporary tables and load pipe delimited data from a text file with predefined format into the tables. It is failing intermittently doing this. 99% times it works perfectly. But on occasions it does fail with error. Once the process is rerun with the same input file it runs successfully.Basically the architecture is of Store/Head Office where there are around 200 remote stores sending set of data files to the Head Office. At HO our application sequentially processes each store which has all the set of files received, creates a corresponding table, loads the data from the file into the table and moves onto the next store.If it is for some reason not able to load the file for a store, it gives a failure message and continues with next store.Error which the OCX throws is "Attempt to convert data stopped by syntax error in source field"

I have a form with a listbox that when the form is opened I need it to display info from a file. I don't know what would be easier to work with Excel or a txt file, but it is in this format:
Phillip Frank
3/19/1990
3
999-555-8618[code].......
I would like it to populate the list box when the form is loaded, but if I have to use a button to tell it to load that is fine also.On the same form I have 4 textboxes that ask for each of the above items (name, DOB, Level, PH#) and a button that when pushed I want it to save it to the same file where the above info was pulled from in the same format.The Show Contacts button doesn't have to be used if it is not needed.

have made a connection to a database through VB and i was able to extract a single value from a record and display it in a datagrid table, but i don't know how to display that value in a textbox. i tried doing e.g. txtABC.text = datagrid123.item but it seems that the values cannot be converted between the datagrid and the textbox.
