VS 2005 - Setting Browsable Attribute Of Property At RunTime

Mar 24, 2009

I have done some searching, but am still having trouble trying to set the browsable attribute of property to false at runtime in order to hide in the properties grid control (based on certain conditions).

Default Browsable Property Value Not Respected In Property Bag

Jan 5, 2009

I believe that the correct way to give a property a default value is to use the Default Attribute on the Property.[code]In the property window, the value that's displayed in a grid's property bag when it's newly dropped onto a form is False, not True. It does recognise that the default value should be True because it shows the value as bolded and then de-bolds it when we manualy set it to true - but it doesn't respect the default as the initial value. Is there any way of getting the property bag to respect the default value?

Usercontrol With Designer Browsable Property Not Saving Value At Run Time?

Aug 17, 2011

I have been making a control and have added a property for a list(of CustomClass). The custom class contains a string, an image and a list of another custom class which contains a string and an image. I have added this property to the designer by adding the browsable attributes and all appears to work correctly with this.

My problem comes when running the program. I can set all of the values within the property and I can go back to them and they are saved, however, as soon as I run the program, the values are wiped out as the property is set to Nothing.In order to allow my property to be edited and saved, I realize that I must initialize the list and have done so in the accessor method of the property (if the property's value is nothing).

I have modified the values in the designer and placed a breakpoint on all of the items which use the property and it's underlying field, as well as on the property's methods itself. The first breakpoint hit is of it being accessed and the value is always nothing.

I'm not sure where the values are supposed to be stored as I have checked the designer code where it would normally store types such as strings and I have checked the resources to see if they have been saved there (like an image would be). After running the code, the values in the designer are wiped out also.

Setting Attribute Value In XML Literals?

Jun 5, 2009

As basic as this is, it took me a few minutes to figure out, so wanted to share with the rest of the community to avoid anyone else from wasting their time.

I am attempting to generate the following XML string using VB.NET XML Literals

<Books>
<Book Name="The First Book" />
<Book Name="The Second Book" />
</Books>

[Code]....

But the compiler is complaining about the quotes that are supposed to surround the attribute value. I tried using single quotes, two double quotes, nothing works.

Store And Then Raise Event In Property Of Attribute

Apr 9, 2009

I think know how to do this in C# but I'm having syntax trouble in VB.NET because I need to take advantage of the 'handles' event stuff. I have different events that I somehow (probably delegate) need stored in a property of an attribute (I just add an attribute to a property linking to the corresponding event).

E.g.
<BindEvent(EventThing)>_
Public ReadOnly Property IsTrue() As Boolean
Get
Return True
End Get
End Property

They need to be events so that other programmers can use the VB.NET handles keyword on methods.
Public Delegate Sub TestEvent(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Object)
Public Event E As TestEvent
Public Sub Test() Handles E
End Sub

These properties are already raising a general event, which I am catching, determining the related property and thus getting the related attribute (and delegate/event). I want to then raise the event that's related. If I just use a delegate tied to the particular event that won't raise other handlers will it? I also want to avoid having to write a sub for each property that just uses Raise Event on the event type if possible as this seems redundant.

E.g. avoid:
Public Event E As TestEvent
Public Sub CallE(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Object)
RaiseEvent E(sender, e)
End Sub

Next, I put an instance of MyButton into a property grid, expand property MC and edit SubProp2.From the type editor for SubProp2, I want to get hold of the attribute applied to property MC.Looking at the context,PropertyDescriptor.ComponentType, we arrive at Type: MyClass.If i look at the attributes applied to MyClass, though, it will only return the attributes applied directly to MyClass, and not the extra attribute applied to the property MC.

C# - RefreshProperties Attribute At Class Level In .net, Winforms + Incorrectly Refreshing Property Grid?

Feb 15, 2010

I had a strange problem editing a class in the property grid whereby the property grid would refresh incorrectly.I managed to reduce the problem down to a class with just two properties. I've included the code at the end to ease explanation.It basically boils down to a class with two properties. The first of which is expandable (a font)The class itself is expandable and also implements the CreateInstance method in the type converter.To see the problem, expand the font, edit, say 'Bold', and tab away. Two problems happen:

(1) The second property jumps up and ends up in the expanded font property.

(2) The '-' sign of the expanded font changes to a '+'.

The problem goes away by attaching ResfreshProperties(RefreshProperties.All) to the class. That's great, but I'd like to understand how it fixed the problem. I've had a look in reflector and can't find any examples of RefreshProperties being attached at the class level.

Setting DataSource Connectionstring At Runtime?

Dec 22, 2011

I am kind of an old 'newbee' at this, so bear with me for a moment. I am developing a windows forms application in Visual Studio 2010 Professional that connects to a remote database (MS sqlServer 2008 R2).To speed up development, I configured a DataSource and used the data objects associated with it. In VB6,
the data source could be assigned to the data objects during runtime using a variety of different runtime database connections, ODBC, ADO, ...

I have been unable to find a similar method with the VS2010 Visual Basic DataSource and underlying TableAdapter, BindingSource, BindingNavigator, down to the individual ComboBox and assorted other bound controls. It's convenient to have the integration, but I've got different users with different permissions, The long and short is that I'd like to be able to assign the data source during runtime operation, at least to the connection string level.

Setting Text Of Label Added At Runtime?

Apr 18, 2011

I've added some Labels to a form at runtime using this

vb.net
Dim x As Integer = 25
For i As Integer = 1 To word.Length

[Code]....

Now, I would like to add text to one of them, but I'm not sure how. I thought by setting .Name I would simply be able to write something like lbl4.text ="A". But, of course, because the Label has not been created yet, this is not possible.

Also, I'm not even sure if .Name is working the way I think it is. I was hoping that it would name each Label consecutively: lbl1, lbl2, lbl3, lbl4...etc.

Am I naming the Labels properly? And how would I add text to one of these Labels?

Setting Properties Of A SSIS DTSX Package At Runtime From VB?

Sep 14, 2009

i am writing a VB front end (VS 2008 .NET 3.5) to a data loading program that involves moving the contents of CSV flat files into SQL Server 2005 staging tables. I have had some experience with DTS in SQL 2000 so I decided to use SSIS packages to load the CSV data. Creating the packages in BIDS worked fine for the development environment where I hard-coded the Connections and file paths. The problem arises when I will release this program to 30 different sites that do not have SQL Server admins to help changing the configuration.

I have a SQL table in which I will put all the necessary path information and I can pull that into the VB program on startup. I need to see an example of how I can set the properties from VB once the package is instantiated and opened.Here is an example of where I plan to set those properties and run the packages.

Private Function RunPackages() As Boolean
Try
Dim oApp As New Application
Dim oPackage As New Package

[code]....

Even though I am using a configuration file in the example, I am finding it difficult to edit the configuration files for each site. I see that there are methods and properties exposed for the oPackage instance. However, I can't find a good reference for the Class model to use as a guideline. All the examples expect packages to be run and configured with SQL Server and BIDS. direct manipulation of package properties in VB or C#?I am now considering using the old standby SQL Bulk Insert. It almost appears as if the Data Tasks are just wrappers for the Bulk Insert operation. Furthermore we have several sites still using SQL Server 2000. With the economy the way it is, most of those sites do not want to spend ANY extra money upgrading to SQL 2005 or 2008.

However, having a good resource to learn how to manipulate SSIS packages from the CLR would be very helpful. I have heard that in SQL 2008 things have changed even more. It is maddeneing that once I learn a "new" Microsoft technology it seems to be discarded by MS in their next release in favor of a "better" alternative.
