Using Web Services, Sending An API Key And Other Information To The Server?

May 29, 2012

I am new to web services in VB.net. I have imported the WSDL into the Visual Studio 2010, but using the .net 2.0 "Web References" framework instead of the new "Service References".I simply need to learn how to pass my API key and one other piece of information through the API to the server. This is all that I have. What code to I need to add to a) Send the API Keyb) Send the Database Mode String

Public Sub Call_Web_Service_Method()
Dim CallWebService As New PersonService.Header()
Dim sPostAPIKEY As String = CallWebService.APIKey()

Retrieve List Of Services Running On Server?

Feb 2, 2012

I'm looking for a way to get details of the name and status of all services running on a service. I did use the following code:
Public Sub GetServices()
Dim localServices As ServiceController() = ServiceController.GetServices()
For Each service As ServiceController In localServices
If Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(service.DisplayName) Then
dictservice(service.DisplayName) = New Service(service.DisplayName, service.ServiceName, service.Status.ToString)
End If
Next
End Sub
However, since I have packaged up my project as a WCF service, the System.ServiceProcess namespace I used cannot be used: Is there any other way I can retrieve the same details? Possibly through WMI?

SQL Server Reporting Services VS Rdlc And The ReportViewer

Mar 28, 2012

We are planning on creating reports to be run on the same computer that the database application is running on. which of these is the best approach? (SQL Server Reporting Services or creating a rdlc ReportViewer report) Also I tried to locate detailed rdlc ReportViewer report tutorials both in books and online and found none. It's probably because I'm looking in the wrong places.

ComboBox Dropdown Server 2003 Terminal Services?

Dec 22, 2011

I have built an application in VB 2010 on my Windows 7 Pro desktop. I have a particular combo box with a datasource that is dynamically populated, depending on certain values entered by the user; it may or may not have any records in the datasource. When I run/install the application on my desktop, the combo box acts normal, if I click the dropdown button and the datasource contains no records, the combobox will show a single blank beneath the combobox (to indicate no records). When I perform the same action on server 2003, the combobox DOES NOT show a blank row, it does nothing! It act's like it's broken.

Passing Current User Credentials From IIS Server To Reporting Services Sever?

Aug 8, 2011

Question: How to pass the current user on the web page from the IIS server to the Reporting Services Server.I have seen this topic throughout the forums. However, the answers are always hard code the user in web.config - use a login window and pass those fields to the IReportServercredentials or create one user for everyone.

When the person who asks the question comes back and says that doesn't work there is not answer.Does anyone know how to do this? I have VS 2008 ( and 2010 ) I am sending the info to SSRS 2005 server.As anyone using SSRS knows that if the reports have parameters and udf behind the report to inspect who the user is, then you have to pass that user to the report.

[Code]...

I have been programming steady with vb.net for a year now and was all happy about using the List view and email etc from web sites. I even used a reportviewer to pdf to email attach, cool. Now I feel quite lost and realize I have not been using properties, etc. That is my background.

Checking State Of DNS Server

Dec 6, 2009

My ISP's DNS server goes down all of a sudden sometimes. This is very annoying while surfing the internet. So, I'm trying to make an application which has the following characteristics :
Runs in system tray
Pings the server periodically
Notifies when the server becomes unreachable/active
Now, I know that the existing workarounds are to use OpenDNS or ping <IP Address> -t in command prompt. I don't want to use them... the reason being that the former gives much higher pings than my DNS & for the latter, I'll have to switch windows.

Checking If Image Exists On Server

Jan 19, 2010

Completely new to ASP.net
Page Language="vb"
Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3603; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3082

I want to check on the server for the existence of an image, then if it does exist, display the image wrapped in other code. E.g.
if "/images/name.jpg" exists then
<div><img src="/images/name.jpg"></div>
else
Do nothing.

Seems really simple to me but NOTHING I have tried has worked (compilation errors). I've tried examples using system.io, DIM stuff with 'FileInfo', Set fs. FileInfo examples produce 'not defined' errors, 'Set' says it's outdated and not used anymore and so on.

VS 2008 Do Timers Not Work In Services

Mar 12, 2010

Do timers not work in services? I have a service that is running fine, has been for a while. I'm trying to add some work that needs to kick off regularly, so I create a timer that fires every 5-seconds and kick it off when needed. The Tick event never fires. Never, not once. I'm not sure why it doesn't work. Here's the relevant code I'm using. I have 4 backgroundworker threads named, simply enough, bgw1 - bgw4. I wil show you the code for one of the threads so you can see what I'm doing.

VS 2008 MS Reporting Services Question - Designer?

Nov 11, 2009

I am trying to build a report using MS reporting services (rdlc file) and having trouble figuring out syntax to take calculated data from a textbox in table1 to table2. In other words, I have totals calculated in table1 and I need to display those totals in another table (table2) and/or a text box outside of table1.

I have tried versions of =ReportItems!TextBox37.Text and =ReportItems!TextBox37.Value and =ReportItems("TextBox37").value etc. but with no luck. The last thing =ReportItems("TextBox37").value does compile but it prints #error on the report.

OnPause And OnContinue Events Windows Services In VS 2008

Jan 8, 2010

I'm trying to write a windows service using vs 2008. I've worked some on services written with VS 2005, but I'm not sure if I've written one from scratch before. When I create my Windows Service, it creates a new class called Service1.vb. If I go to the methods available for Service1, I see OnStart, OnStop, New, and Finalize. The Windows Service that I have that was written in VS 2005 also has an OnPause and OnContinue events. I need these in my service as well.

VS 2008 - Web Services Application Takes FOR EVER To Build / Run Using Windows 7

Jul 6, 2010

I'm a relatively seasoned VB (COM) vet but this is my first VB.Net application and as is my luck a web services application feeding off a site that I can't publicly mention nor can I post any code that may expose the site.

So, here's the problem. I have written a simple form and have 2 buttons. 1 button simply asks the webservice for it's version. This works no problem. I was able to load the web reference using their supplied WSDL file for this "version" class. Now that I have that working I think "GREAT, that was straight forward. I have my credentials, urls, etc working, the rest of this should be just as straight forward." (See where I jinxed myself here?)

Anyway, I move onto the next WSDL and set of classes and get that reference added no problem. (Man that took a LONG time, like 20 minutes.) I then build my "Get my order data" code syntaxes on the prescribed exposed classes and run my project just to see what errors I get. The "run" process takes almost 45 minutes to an hour..... It's as if the app is getting the WSDL set all over again but doing it over and over..... I have no clue what's going on.

I've tried to disable all the Windows 7 "potential" issues, UAC, firewall, etc, but these changes don't help. Anti virus, spyware, etc all these are off and no difference. I'm running VS2008 as an Admin, right click "run as admin", and have complete control over this machine. Any ideas, suggestions, etc are VERY welcome and I am happy to expose as much of this application as I can providing I can stay with in the rules of the confidentiality contract.

VS 2008 Checking To See If It Can Connect?

Apr 25, 2009

i know My.Computer.Network.Ping but as alot of people know, it's glitchy and bugged.

I want something that checks to see if it can connect with something, as simple as it sounds.

I'm experimenting with sockets at the moment, but having trouble so i thought i would come and ask here

What i'm up to:

VB
IP = Net.IPAddress.Parse(getinfo("settings.inf", i & "IP"))
socket = New Net.Sockets.Socket(Net.Sockets.AddressFamily.InterNetwork, Net.Sockets.SocketType.Stream, Net.Sockets.ProtocolType.IP)

[Code].....

However the problem with this it that i pinged 1.1.1.1 and it still connects, ALSO i would like to be able to check a hostname not just an IP to make things more convenient, please help me to find a way to properly check a connection with IP or hostname.

Note: The getinfo function is defined by me

VS 2008 - Checking If Date Variable Is Not Set

Feb 28, 2010

In the following code, a Date variable is declared but not set to anything:
Dim myDate As Date
What's the proper method of checking if the Date variable is "new" and not set to anything?

For example, getting the lowest date value from an array of dates:
Dim dtMostRecent As Date
For i As Intger = 0 To myDateArray.Count - 1
If myDateArray(i) < dtMostRecent Then dtMostRecent = myDateArray(i)
Next

In the code above, I need a way to check first if dtMostRecent is unassigned, in which case just give it the first value, after which it can be compared with subsequent values. How to check if a Date variable is unassigned.
