I have a need to be able to communicate with a VB6 application (I have the source code) whilst it is running. I just need to get it to display some predefined forms. Any tips on how I could achieve it. I was thinking along the lines of using Sockets.
View 1 RepliesI need to communicate between multiple applications (one server and multiple clients) in the LAN. While googling I came across 3 concepts (TCP/IP, Named Pipes and WCF). I also understand WCF needs lot of study for a starter like me. I need to have one (server) application running on one machine, the values generated by it should be displayed immediately on the other (client) application which will be running on multiple machines in a LAN. Also when the user pauses the process from the client application, it should pause the process on the server application.

View 6 RepliesI am building a client-server type applications and they are communicating over sockets. This is the first time I am doing such a program and I have been learning off a web example and thought I understood it all but it would appear I am missing something as it starts to work then errors. Here is what I have:

All of the above works and if I open up a telnet command window I can connect to my machine running this code on my specified port and in the command prompt window 'IDENTIFY' appears as it should from the above code. But it then gets to this block an errors on the second line:

Is it possible to dynamically direct a particular control's event to use a predefined method. For example: I have a form which I dynamically add controls to, let's say, TextBox1, TextBox2 and extBox3 and a module which as 3 routines, Method1, Method2, Method3. When I dynamically add my controls, eg TextBox4, I want to choose which of the 3 methods I want mapped to which event.
I was thinking of something like this...

So, today I was programming, and then right clicked and noticed a 'Insert Snippet' option. I've seen it before, but never clicked it. I thought this was an amazing thing. It had predefined code which auto inserts. Was just letting some of our other members know, that it does include some predefined things such as 'Write to a text file', etc.
View 4 RepliesI have 2 forms in my visual basic 2010 project. Both are connected with an SQL 2008 Server where i keep a db with customers records(name,surname,address, etc).What i want to do is to give certain criteria in the first form, lets say name,and hit a search button. The program should search the db if the specified name exists.If it exists i want to show the results in the second form.By results i mean the name , surname, address,etc. If it does not exist i want to prompt the user to insert data into the db.The problem is that i know how to do this work in a single form but not how to make the two forms "communicate" with each other (meaning that one does the search and the other the projection-adding part).
Edit:I tried setting the filters but all i get is errors. I will post whatever i have written so far in case someone can help me out. So here it is.As i stated earlier i know how to search for the data in a single form(lets call it DisplayForm). As Olivier mentioned i have textboxes for the records, a combo box with the search criteria(name , surname,id) and a Search button that perfoms the search and populates the text boxes. I want this procedure be done in a second form (lets call it FormSearch) and populate the textboxes in form DisplayForm.
We have an application that has a main form with a map on it. Right now the paradigm is to have forms that are displayed using menu items to display information to the user. Most of these forms are modal forms, but a couple are non-modal forms that interact with the map. For some of the forms, it really would make for a better user experience if we could dock them in the main form of the app and allow the user to see both the form and the map. For instance. We could have a list of map features in a docked window, and select one of the items on the list and have the map zoom to that feature. Or do the reverse: let the users select a map item and have a docked window that shows details of the feature. Sounds great, but I wonder about what sort of gotchas we may encounter. In particular, what if we have two windows docked at the same time? Could we get tangled up in our event code?

By communication I mean that I should be able to pass anything from on to another. note that although I'm not asking for code (that would beat my purpose, of course) I think some small snippets wouldn't hurt. In any case what I really want is the "recommended procedure", I mean what Microsoft recommends for this environment, and documentation :)

I'm programming a basic slot machine in Visual basic, and want to use a for loop to randomly choose the image for each slot, display the image in each slot, and change the slotName variable (so I can check later on which symbols are in the slots) for each slot. The problem I'm finding with a for loop is that the variables and objects for each slot have different names (slot1Name, slot2Name, slot3Name, lblSlot1, lblSlot2, lblSlot3, etc). Is there any way I could have could something like:

This is the code at the moment, this code is repeated (with different variable and object names), for each of the 3 slots, which is pretty inefficient.

I'm working on a little board game we play here in Jamaica just to see how it would look and as a sort of challenge for myself while on vacation. I'm however stuck on how to make my markers (PictureBoxes - two per player) move along the board.So heres my problem; I have 40 slots where the picturebox can be moved to (eg picturebox1.Top = 324, picturebox1.left=243). Now moving to these slots are determined by the roll of a pair of dice. How can I assign a variable preferably an integer for each slot so when the dice is rolled I can just do a little addition as to where the markers can be moved?

I have an application which the user can open multiple instances on the same machine. However, a section of the app would have sync problems if more than 1 instance has control over it. This is where I thought of transferring control, or sharing, between them. What should I be looking into?
They would have to be able to identify which one of them has control and to send text information over. I thought IPC or Named Pipes could do the trick, but I'm unfamiliar with them and examples seem to indicate only a single server will work. Here, I have multiple instances of the same app and every one of them needs to be able to listen for that request for control.
I am communicating to a device using a USB to serial port (VCP). I am having a problem with the usb failing. When the usb fails my app will lock up and the com port is lost. I have seen a post about this but cannot find it.
View 3 RepliesI have a Delphi program that communicates with a vb.net dll that I created. The vb.net dll communicates with a Fluke scope meter via an RS232 connection. I have created a program that communicates correctly via RS232, giving me the anticipated value. Though, when I package this up as a dll and access the dll from my Delphi program I always receive a value of "1", rather than the value I was expecting (most cases a value in and around 240).I know that my delphi program is definitely communicating correctly with the dll and that my dll is definitely communicating with the scope meter

I've been trying to create a simple program with vb 2010 to play video's (when you use multiple screens) on the main screen (with controls) and the full screen (with no controls) on the second screen.I get it to work that I can open the second screen and play a video, but the video is only played on the main screen and audio is played on the second screen.I want to play the video on the main screen as well as on the second screen at the same time.
