VS 2008 : Downgrading Framework Click Once?
Jul 9, 2010
I have a clickonce application that's already deployed to ~30 machines with .NET framework 3.5 as a prerequisite. I now want to remove the 3.5 prerequisite and opt for a 2.0 prerequisite without messing up my existing installs/deployments.Are there any pitfalls in doing this that I should know about? I really don't want to have to force all old users to re-install.

I write programs in VB 2010 which uses .Net Framework 4.0. However my school currently only has .Net Framework 3.1 (3.something, think its 1)Is there anyway i can "downgrade" the needed .net framework, or even just select another .net version to use?

I have a simple application that stores settings using My.Settings. When built using .Net 4.0, it works fine. If I change to build with .Net 3.5 Client (or just .Net 3.5) I get an error 'An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for userSettings/My_Application.My.MySettings: Could not load file or assembly 'System, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089''.
How can I build an application for PC's that do not have .Net 4.0.

Im having a problem with my program which was coded in VB.net 2005. My pc is windows XP with MS Office 2003. My program works fine for users with 2003 Office but has errors on users with 2000 Office. I was able to downgrade my pc to Office 2000 so my program would reference to MS office 9.0 (2000). This proved to be successful since both 2000 and 2003 users can now print properly. The problem now is my development pc cant create any word.application ...
on this part...
Friend mWordObject As Word.Application
Dim oWord As New Word.Document
mWordObject = CreateObject("Word.Application") '- where error

I have an click once application. The prerequisites which i have mentioned is .net Framework 2.0. If the prerequisite is not there in publish.html, i get a button to download it, else the Run button will install the application (which is developed by me) . This works fine in all the machines, except for one in which i have the following versions of .NET Framework,
.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 3.2.30729
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 3.5.30729
.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 2.2.30729
In this machine even though we have Framework 2.0 and higher versions, i am getting the button to download Framework. This is not correct.

I'm calling the following method from a button click event to export a datatable to excel. After the export is completed, the excel application object is quit, released and assigned to nothing. But in reality it's not getting released and stays active unless the entire application is closed. So every time the button is clicked for export, a new excel application object keeps on running. The problem doesn't occur if two of the lines from the method below are not used. But I can't omit them as they are really needed. Check the * marked lines.
Code:
''' <summary>
''' Exports data from a datatable to excel.
''' </summary>

I need to detect if any version of the .NET framework is installed as we are deploying a .NET 2.0 app via logon script (ie XCOPY deployment) to all PCs in our network. The .NET app will be set to start when a user logs in, so we need to determine if .NET 2.0 (or higher) is installed before we deploy the app otherwise the user will get an error each time they log in. Is there any sure fire way to detect .NET via vbscript or batch file? All of the results I have found on google don't seem to be that reliable.
I have recently written a program that detects installed programs in the same way that Add/Remove Programs does but the problem with this is that even Add/Remove Programs does not seem to show the .NET framework on all PCs that have got it installed (like my home PC for example, definitely has .NET 3.5 installed but its not in the Add/Remove Programs list).

I'm writing a code that will check if .net framework 3.5 SP1 is installed before installing the program. The command I found googling around was System.Runtime.InteropServices.Runtime Environment.GetSystemVersion..I wasn't able to verify the correct .net framework version using this command.I'm currently running 3.5 SP1 and this command is showing v2.0.Is there another way to get the correct .net framework version?

I developed an app using the .net framework 3.5 sp1. I have now been told that the published version must not require sp1 but just the 3.5 framework.
So I uninstalled sp1 from my pc but not cannot publish the app. The app code will run without error but when I build it for publishing I get the error The "RequiresFramework35SP1Assembly" task was not found. Check the following: 1.) The name of the task in the project file is the same as the name of the task class. 2.) The task class is "public" and implements the Microsoft.Build.Framework.ITask interface. 3.) The task is correctly declared with <UsingTask> in the project file, or in the *.tasks files located in the "C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv3.5" directory.

Is it possible to reduce the version of .net framework of my application. For example: Host using my application have .NET 2.0 I make changes in my app so that it always run as .NET 2.0 not the latest .NET 3.5
Or another idea i have is to deploy .NET 3.5 in installation package i.e. if he runs my app and it detects .NET version and if its not .NET 3.5 then .NET 3.5 installer should open else my app should run.

VS 2008 SP1
I am deploying my application. As the .Net framework needs to be installed on the user's computer. Is it possible to pack the .Net framework into my executable setup.exe?
This will make my setup.exe big. However, the client doesn't mind.

I have a solution that I wish to upgrade from Vb.net framework 1.1 to framework 4.0. The solution consists of a number of projects, all but one of which compile to dll's. The master project compiles to a executable which provides a menuing system which dynamically loads the dll's and connects to entry points.
The projects contain normal classes, numbers of forms and also controls, which are either usercontrols or are inherited extensions of standard windows controls. There are a number of third party components (eg reporting and grid controls from Component One, Ribbon control from DevExpress etc).

I'm running some unit tests for a large VB.Net application I help maintain and am running into problems with tests timing out. The test run is set up so that there's no timeout limit on the overall test run, but a limit of 2 minutes per individual test. However, a couple of the tests take a lot longer than this to run, so we tried adding the timeout attribute to the test's declaration, i.e
<TestMethod(), Timeout(15 * 60 * 1000)> Public Sub DoSomething()
for a 15 minute timeout. However, the 2 minute timeout set in the test run properties seems to be taking precedence, even though it says that the timeout attribute should override it.

When you develop a class library that will be used by others, are there any guidelines on how you decide what namespace to put it under? I often find third party classes just use the company name as the root namespace but I was also wondering if it is frowned upon (or even possible) to add one of your own classes to an existing framework namespace.

I need to include my application in a custom Preinstallation Environment I am creating. The problem is that in order to include the framework within my PE would require a ton of extra work plus increase the size by a huge amount.I know that you can use an application like XenoCode to include the framework dependencies, but the cost of their software is pretty high.

Do we have nay .NET framework classes to replace the following API calls?
CreateWindowEx
GetWindowText
ShowWindow
SendMessage
GetWindowRect
Basically we have migrated our application from VB6 to .NET and used same API calls in .NET as well.
Now the time has come to replace all API calls to .NET framework classes.
We used those API calls to validate textboxes by popping up a temporary error message box next to textbox object. After few seconds, the error message box disappears by itself or on loosing the focus of textbox.
If we can use the similar functionality of .NET, then there will be less code changes
