VS 2008 Finding Invalid File Name Characters?

Nov 17, 2009

Well I've recently discovered that trying to create a file with so-called 'illegal characters' will cause your application to crash.. How do I find these characters in a string and replace them with nothing?

The invalid characters are / : * ? " < > | if that helps.

VS 2008 Finding All Characters In A String?

Jul 27, 2009

I have a string. I need to check what characters it contains because certain invalid characters are causing my sql query not to work. In the query I select where SupplierName is equal to the string. I need to replace the invalid characters at database and vb level. But I need to know first what the characters are.

VS 2008 - Balloon Tooltip Show Invalid Filename Characters

Apr 11, 2009

I am using a Balloon tooltip to show the user which characters are invalid as a filename. I use the IO.Path.GetInvalidFileNameChars array and convert each character to a string, before appending it to a "Invalid filename characters:" string.
vb.net

If IO.Path.GetInvalidFileNameChars.Contains(e.KeyChar) Then
e.Handled = True
Dim str As String = "The following characters are invalid filename characters:" & nl
Dim invalidChars As New List(Of String)
For Each c As Char In IO.Path.GetInvalidFileNameChars
[Code] .....

The result is not pretty: How do I get rid of the 'non-visual' characters (they are probably newlines, backspaces, null chars, etc) so they don't clutter up the list?

Detect / Suppress Invalid Characters In TextBox?

Jan 5, 2012

I have a TextBox with a list of filenames in it. The user is able to change these file names, but I don't want them to enter invalid characters, such as slashes or question marks.

I've tried two approaches, but they are not satisfactory:

1. Detect the key pressed with the KeyDown event:

Use e.KeyValue to detect keys like Keys.Oem5 (= backslash), then use 'e.SuppressKeyPress = True' to suppress the key.Problem is, with different Keyboard layouts, The Oem5-key isn't always a backslash.

2. Filter the text:

Use the TextChanged event and do a Replace("", "") on the text for every invalid character (there's 9 of them).Of course this will create 'lag' with every keystroke, especially if there's a lot of text. Also the text-cursor and scrollbar will jump back to the top-left when using Replace.

In short: I'm looking for a way to detect the character that is being entered and suppress or remove it when invalid.

C# - Finding The Index Of Characters In A String?

Oct 22, 2010

I have a text file that is automatically generated by an older computer system daily. Unfortunately, the columns in this file are not delimited and they are not exactly fixed width (each day the width of each column could change depending on the amount of chars of the data in each column). The file does have column headings, so I want to find the width of each column using the column headings. Here is an example of the column heading row:

JOB_NO[variable amount of white space chars]FILE_NAME[variable amount of ws chars]PROJECT_CODE[variable amount of ws chars][carriage return]

What I want to do is get the index of of the first char in a column and the index of the last white space of a column (from the column heading). I would want to get the index of the "J" in JOB_NUM and the last white space before the "F" in FILE_NAME for the first column.I guess I should also mention that the columns may not always be in the same order from day to day but they will have the same header names. I know I can use the string.indexOf("JOB_NO") to get the index of the start of the column, but how do I get the index of the last white space in each column? (or last whitespace before the next first non-whitespace that denotes the start of the next column)

Dim outParams As ManagementBaseObject = classInstance.InvokeMethod("EnableDHCP", Nothing, Nothing)

VS 2008 .DBF Connection String - Invalid File Path?

Sep 21, 2009

Dim dbconn As OleDbConnection
Dim DBCommand As OleDbDataAdapter
Dim DS As New DataSet
dbconn = New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:COLORsitedataCUFORHDR.dbf;Extended Properties=dBASE IV;")

[Code]...

I prefer SQL server but im afraid in this app I have no choice. I think the .DBF file is v III dBase according to a thrid party .dbf viewer. The code explodes on the DBCommand.Fill(DS) line, telling me I have provided and invalid file path. The path is good to go.

Should I be using a driver with a different provider? When I remove the Extended Properties parameter I get an error unrecognizable database format - hinting in this case the path is correct.

VS 2008 : Working With Files With Illegal Characters In File Name?

Jul 3, 2009

save/create a file with a character such as ; or or * in the name then windows will tell you that you cant do that. However, this is obviously possible via some programming languages (im assuming VB.NET probably throws an exception if you try this). So here is my situation - my program works with some files that are produced by a third party program and these files get named whatever the subject of the email that each file relates to was. So if one of these emails had a subject of "Hello ;" then the file would be saved as that name by this third party program. The problem is when my program comes to rename this file or move it then it just throws an exception basically saying that the file doesnt exist, however it works perfectly fine with files that dont have these illegal characters in so it is definitely that thats the problem.

VS 2008 Finding A Specific Row And Specific Columns In Data Base File (Access)?

Jul 24, 2011

I wonder if it is possible to find a specific row and specific columns in data base file (Access) . You see , I am using a DataGridView control to show only SOME of the columns (fields) of a table from an Access file . For example , lets say that in the DataGridView control I only show the following fields :Field1 , Field2 and Field3 .Now , when the user selects an entry in the DataGridView control , I want to insert the text from Field4 into a text box on the form .

The problem , however , is that I don't know how to get the specific row in the data base file and also I don't know how to get the text in column (field) Field4 of that row .One thing that might be important is that the index of the row in the data base file is not necessarily the same with the index of the current row in the DataGridView control . This is because in the DataGridView control the rows are order by the contents in the ID Field .ol .

Adding Txt-file With App And Finding It On Another Pc?

Nov 6, 2011

I need my published vb 2008 application to open a helpfile that I wrote. It is a simple .txt-file and this piece of code does the trick as long as the program is not published because I already know where I placed the Helpfile:

System.Windows.Forms.Help.ShowHelp(Me, "C:Helpfile.txt", HelpNavigator.TableOfContents)

After it is published on another pc, the helpfile is not on the root of the c-drive but in the application folder of the program. However, I can not know where the path to the program folder of someone else's pc is. It all depends on where they decide to place the program when they install, right?

It seems I need to replace this little: "C:Helpfile.txt" with some code that searches all the drives and directories and/or points directly to the Helpfile's placement - i.e. the parent directory of the program.

VS 2008 Detecting Invalid Images?

Jan 12, 2010

I have a program that parses INI files (yes yes, I know, but I'm stuck with using them, not my own request), and it downloads external images (if the INI contains the path) to the program and cache's them.

Recently, I've run into a snag with the system. Most of the images use Imageshack for storage, but one of them has suddenly 404'd, and whenever I set it to the picturebox to the downloaded image, I get an out of memory error rather quickly (and the file itself is 1kb).

I guess I need to implement a checking system offline to find out if the image is actually an image or just a '404' text...but is there a way to not have to implement this clientside, and have it be checked when I download it?
