Adding Txt-file With App And Finding It On Another Pc?
Nov 6, 2011
I need my published vb 2008 application to open a helpfile that I wrote. It is a simple .txt-file and this piece of code does the trick as long as the program is not published because I already know where I placed the Helpfile:
After it is published on another pc, the helpfile is not on the root of the c-drive but in the application folder of the program. However, I can not know where the path to the program folder of someone else's pc is. It all depends on where they decide to place the program when they install, right?
It seems I need to replace this little: "C:Helpfile.txt" with some code that searches all the drives and directories and/or points directly to the Helpfile's placement - i.e. the parent directory of the program.

I am working on a code where I need to add 21 years to the date 02/15/1957 and have it display the week day of that year. I have been looking at different web sites for visual basic
So far I have made a program that can find all the factors of a number (e.g type in 24 and you'll get 1 * 24, 2*12, 3*8, 4*6,). What I would like to do now is add a check box (called Show_Prime_Factors_chk) that when checked it will also show all the prime factors below all the normal factors.
I will have a directory of files (IFO, BUP, and VOB; DVD files for anyone who cares), I need to find the first one by sorting these like this: Filter out everything that does not have a .VOB in it, then find the one like this VTS_**_1.VOB. It will always have a "1" before the extension, but the two numbers before that change, lastly I need that file returned as a variable.
Is there a better way of finding the path of a file that was opened with the open file dialogue? This is what I did. It works, but it seems like there should be a way to get the path through one of the open dialogue options.
Code: 'm_PicSource = OpenFileDialog1.FileName 'm_PicSource is a global var Dim strCnt As Integer = m_PicSource.Length - 1
I am trying to search a drive letter (C drive) for a file in Vb.Net 2010. After I find the file path I want to run the executable. This is the code I am trying to use to find the file:
I've been doing a lot of coding latley and I'm interested in some things that vb can do. I was wondering if vb has the ability to search a directory for a file or mutipule files within a folder. Like in dos I can do C:user*.* and I can get all files that have . in them. Is there a similer way to do this in VB, I don't think VB has a wildcard or I've not heard that it does so I'm comfused on how I would find a file if I didn't know the path.
I am a newbie when it comes to programming. Right now I am trying to create a program that will read in a .txt file that consists of different integers on each line. For example, the .txt file looks something like this:
I'm using Visual Basic Professional 2010, I have two directories of XML files. The naming convention in directory one is a user's name, a six digit date and ending in ".xml_CREATE.xml". So, I perform some work on a file in directory two. During the course of that processing I discover that a file exists in directory one called "Mike" an unknown six digit date and ending with ".xml_CREATE.xml", so while I have no way to know the date, I know it exists and would look something like Mike030312.xml_CREATE.xml. So, now I want to load that file as an XElement that I will eventually incorporate into an XDocument, so I need to perform a Load similar to: myXMLFile = XElement.Load(My.Settings.XMLDir & "" & Mike030312.xml_CREATE.xml), However, since I don't know the date, I need to insert wildcards at that spot. How do I make that happen?
I've been writing a socket application in which the client sends a user/pass combination which the server compares to a local text file. I'm only hacvin a problem with a small section where I have a do loop which does this comparison:(the string 'fromclient' has been defined earlier, as the information was received from the client)
fromfile As String Dim sr As StreamReader = File.OpenText("C:PASS.txt") Do While sr.Peek <> -1
I am working on a program that opens a .txt file, finds the length of each line in the file, and then outputs the minimum and maximum lengths. For example, assuming this is the .txt file I am opening:
2789304 293048203 27598493
[code].....
I would like to return something like this:
Minimum length: 6 Maximum length: 9
I cannot use arrays for this assignment. I figured out how to get the maximum length but cannot figure out how to get the minimum. Am I going about this the right way or is there an easier way to do this? Here is what I have thus far:
Dim FileName As String Dim FileReader As StreamReader Dim FileLine As String
I am taking a VB2008 class and I have the entire program figured out except for one thing. I've checked our text I've scoured the internet and I've tried tons of things.
What this section of code does is access a data file, calculate the average from it... done.. that works, calculates the highest number in it... done that works... and calculate the lowest number from the file... nope... not working. I've tried tons of things and what i have in there now keeps giving me an output of 0, when it should be a 2.
Private Sub btnCalc_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCalc.Click 'Calculates average, minimum, and maximum temperatures from data file Dim month As String
Well I've recently discovered that trying to create a file with so-called 'illegal characters' will cause your application to crash.. How do I find these characters in a string and replace them with nothing?
The invalid characters are / : * ? " < > | if that helps.
In a text file I have users add a folder using the folderbrowserdialog users then push add which appends the text with lets say they selected downloads
Downloadsname=Downloads downloadspath=C:documents and settingsJamesDesktop
how can I make it so that when they push a button it seraches for downloadsname then after the = is the text to use as a string and do the same with downloadspath
I suppose technically this isn't .NET specific but I suspect this is something to do with the registry and I'm using .NET!I'm trying to find out how to get the fully qualified path relating to a file type. For example, the system knows that to open a PDF file it needs to launch C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Reader 10.0Readeracrord32.exe
I've had a good long search through the registry and found a lot of references to the adobe path probably too many - and I've edited them to try and "break" the process so I can identify which one is used to discover the path but with no luck. I'm assuming this has something to do with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT?
I have a binary file. If I look at it with a hex editor, the first values are:208, 207, 17, 224, 161, 177, 26, 225, 0, 0, 0, ... etc.It has a length of 330240 bytes I have tried to open it and read it into a string so I can manipulate it and write it back. No matter what I use, I either don't get the correct number of bytes or the values in the string are incorrect. The most common error results in the first values being: 63, 63, 17, 63, 63, 26, 0, 0, 0 .... etc.It is interesting that it appears that any value > 63 becomes 63.
I get the 2nd values by a simple loop:
For lnx = 0 To 99 Debug.Write(Asc(line.Substring(lnx, 1))) Next
I have tried a whole number of ways to read in the file, including filestream, My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText, File.io.readAllLines, etc.All either give me a string length of about 324000 (not sure why) or, if they do, don't have the correct values. Yes, I have tried various encoding options.
I need to find a string (sort of like: "D" & Chr(0) + "L" & Chr(0) + "S" & Chr(0)... ) so I can then replace that portion of the string with a new value, then write out the file.I use the ".indexOf" to find the data in the string. Why can't I load the file into a string? Or, do you know of an easy way to find some text (similar to above) in a file and then replace the next x number of bytes with a new value and close the file?
All I am doing is reading each txt file I find in a directory and finding certain strings in the text then counting how many I find in each file and then once each file has its separate counts it send it to a sql database. I have most of it done, but I cant seem to get the count to separate each file so my problem now is that it counts the first file but when it counts the next file it adds to the first file and so on through all the files
Well I basically know how to read a text file, replace text then write to one. how to append text after a specified string (ie, insert text at a specified line, removing the text after a string in a line and changing it without altering other lines, etc). Can someone please tell me how I would go about adding a string after a certain string in a text file? For example:
Is there a better (and faster) way to find out the last modified date/time for an entire drive (or folder) without scanning each file and folder individually to find the latest modified date?
I am not an ardent developer in vb.net programming. But off late I am using vb.net to develop a windows application.
The following is what I am trying to do:
I am reading an excel file and storing the string value present in each cell, and trying to match the string in a word file.
The program works fine except that I am having problems in returning the page numbers of the matched string.
The page number value is always returned as one.
The following is a piece of what I had written:
If FindStringInFile(wordfilename, vValues) Then currentPageNumber = word.ActiveDocument.ActiveWindow.Selection.Range.Information(Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.WdInformation.wdActiveEndAdjustedPageNumber) TextBox3.Text = currentPageNumber End If
wordfilename is my word file and vValues is my excel string data
I am running vb.net in visual studio 2005 and i am fairly new to it all, whilst trying to create a windows application i have lost the .vbproj file and am only left with the .vb code that has been created whilst i have been using the toolbox to create the application graphically. Is there anyway for me to recover the .vbproj file without having to redo the whole thing?
I wonder if it is possible to find a specific row and specific columns in data base file (Access) . You see , I am using a DataGridView control to show only SOME of the columns (fields) of a table from an Access file . For example , lets say that in the DataGridView control I only show the following fields :Field1 , Field2 and Field3 .Now , when the user selects an entry in the DataGridView control , I want to insert the text from Field4 into a text box on the form .
The problem , however , is that I don't know how to get the specific row in the data base file and also I don't know how to get the text in column (field) Field4 of that row .One thing that might be important is that the index of the row in the data base file is not necessarily the same with the index of the current row in the DataGridView control . This is because in the DataGridView control the rows are order by the contents in the ID Field .ol .
Code: Private Sub CompileToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles CompileToolStripMenuItem.Click Dim SaveFile As New SaveFileDialog
I'm trying to add values to an xml file from vb without replacing anything using xmldocumentfragment. I want the ID's of each entry to increment, but when i run the code now all values get replaced. Here is the code:
Dim name = Page.Request.Form("name") Response.Write("Team " & "'" & Request.Form("name") & "'" & " has been created.") System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("python.exe", "d:hg-scriptsadmin
I'm storing a multi-line text file (in .dir format) in the directory the user chooses, and what I need to do, is when they import it (which my program can already do) I need it to find the end of the file (line) and then read that line, that line will be a number which corresponds with a number system. Basically, the file looks like this
1. Time: 10/27/2009 4:58:09 PM Title: Title Author: Author Entry: Test
2The 2 at the end specifies what the number will be next time. How do I do this?
