VS 2008 - How To Implement New Encryption Algorithms
May 28, 2009
I want to try and use the new encryption algorithms provided with .NET 3.5. Any links or examples for how to use one of them to encrypt xml content?
As written on msdn site is:
The following algorithms are included:
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with key sizes of 128 and 256 bits for encryption.
Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-256 and SHA-384) for hashing.
Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) using curves of 256-bit and 384-bit prime moduli for signing. This algorithm is provided by the ECDsaCng class. It allows you to sign with a private key and verify with a public key.
Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) using curves of 256 and 384-bit prime moduli for key exchange/secret agreement. This algorithm is provided by the ECDiffieHellmanCng class.

Is there a way to encrypt/decrypt text (string form) in VB.net using another string as a key? Meaning, if one user encrypts using this key, the other user needs to decrypt using the same key?I do NOT mean public and private key encryption or anything of the sort.If not, what is the second best way to encrypt/decrypt data without public/private keys?I want to make a simple way to send messages securely.

I'm trying to measure the performance of seven sorting algorithms in a single VB 2008 program. I've tried using a Timer componend, the Stopwatch, and DateTime.Ticks but nothing works. The following simple code produces a result of about 500 (milliseconds), which is correct, but when I change 500 to 1000, I get a ridiculous result like 0 or 8.

I have set up a method in vb.net and in xcode for encrypting a string using as far as i can tell the same parameters for an AES encryption.I've looked all over the place but cannot find information on whether they use the same encryption algorithm and settings.
this is the vb.net code:
Dim encryptAES As New AesCryptoServiceProvider()
Dim encoding As New UTF8Encoding()
Dim encryptor As ICryptoTransform
encryptAES.Key = encoding.GetBytes("12345678901234567890123456789032")
encryptAES.IV = encoding.GetBytes("1234567890123416")
encryptAES.Mode = CipherMode.CBC

Problem: QuoteNeed to design a program in VB.net 2008 that can encrypt and decrypt messages stored in simple text files using a private key stored in a separate file. Software should also be able to allow the users to enter simple messages that either displays the encrypted or decrypted message. The encryption method should use a simple substitution method. It should be set out in the following format:

I am quite new at VB.NET and just need helo on sorting algorithms, prferbly the fastest (quick sort) but bubble would so. It is for sorting and array for 12 numbers, which are being enter by the user via a input box. These are then transfered onto a listbox for visual aid. so the steps involved would be: (already done)1) Enter then inputs into array via inputbox2) Input to sppear in listbox (not done)3) Sort the array ascending/decending4) print results into the listbox again.In my code there is also a total and a average, but that doesnt need any help on it. The key or iv for the encryption (which is a series of bytes) could be generated from a user defined password, making it so the key used to decrypt is never stored even in the compiled application. Only providing the main password would provide the key to decrypt the data, limiting the attack surface to pretty much just brute force dictionary attacks.
I think that is probably a bit beyond the scope of this question though, he probably needs to start just saving and recalling data properly.
How would one go about doing this? I've read a little about encryption and I even have a demo program, I just don't understand the overall process of this. (I included the OP in the topic's title because it was his idea, and he might be able to explain it the best).

I am making a Gmail notification program that handles multiple accounts.The user will, obviously, have to input their authentication information for each email account so that the program can save it to login to Gmail with.
What is the best way to encrypt something like that since this information will have to be saved in their harddisk?

Alright I am trying to make a little login system with encryption. I am trying to see if the user entered in there encryption key, if they did then they can input there account. Same thing with the password textbox. If they already entered in there encryption key then let them type in there password. I am trying to make it so if there text in encryption key then let them type in there account or if they didn't then let them put it in then let them type in there account.

I am currently working on a simple data encryption program in VB 2008 express. Basically, I want the user to be able to select any file type and the program will read the data and store it in a text box. The user would then input a key, push the encrypt button and the program would XOR each byte of data with each character from the key and store the data in the third text box. I have written a program that has similar functionality only, it will not read from files, it simply reads data from a text box, so I have a encryption algorithm that works.Here is my

I'm a complete beginner to programming alone, let alone VB.net. What I need to do is encrypt a block of text inputted by a user using a keyword that will also be inputted by the user. This is all to be done using ciphertext, so naturally the user would be informed the keyword can not have any repeating characters. I figure the English alphabet will be predefined in capitals and lowercase, then the keyword will be read character by character, removing those characters from the alphabet array and then appending them to the end of it (to create the new encrypted alphabet). How to read the keyword character by character, and then removing the corresponding letter from the alphabet. The best I can think is to check each character of the keyword against each character of the array which I'm sure is much more work than I need to do.

This seems like it would be so simple and fast, but I cannot figure out how to accomplish it in VB since there aren't many bit functions. I want to take a file and append 5 junk bits at the beginning and 3 junk bits at the end. In essence, just add 1 byte to the file, but in the process offset all the current bits so the file is no longer readable.
I just need a very simple encryption/decryption, but it needs to be very fast as well. I try XORing the bytes, but it gets slow with just a 1MB file. Some of the files are going to be close to 10MB.

If I'm not mistaken PHP crypt() function use DES-based encryption algorithm. So I've search DES Encryption code and all that I found is code that similar to the one in this post http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=471798
But with those codes I must enter 8 character lenght salt. Less then that the code wouldn't succeed. In the other hand. The PHP crypt() function only could use 2 character length salt. If you enter more than that, it seems it only use the first 2 character..[URL]

I'm faced with a (fun, actually) data mining problem; I have raw ASCII files from instruments, and I want to move that data (~400 GB) into a database, then be able to run various algorithms determining correlations of time series, etc. I would like to write the mining algorithms in Visual Basic (.net, VS 2010 right now), and be able to do visualizations with VB code I have in hand.On the nature of the data: think of a set of several thousand devices, each recording a measurement at a given interval - so I'm talking time-series vectors. It's not more complex than that - though I may have vectors with holes, etc. - not sure what problems of that sort lurk in the data.I spent today re-acquainting myself with VB.NET's interface to (in one case) a Microsoft Access database. What used to be fairly simple - DAO I think it was - involved tables, recordsets, etc (and that would likely be fine). Now I seem to be required to have a weird variety of generally useless objects, e.g. 'adapters', 'datasets', etc. The problem is that I know exactly what I need, and all this extraneous stuff just gets in the way (certainly in coding complexity and opaqueness, and likely in efficiency as well). If any of these mechanisms gave me a kind of virtual access to the entire dataset, and let me control caching parameters, etc.it might be great, but I found nothing along those lines. It seems like useless bloat, though I suppose it must be useful to someone.Anyway, I tried a number of different approaches, and none seemed at all aimed at what I need to do: efficiently do math on a large dataset. I can't believe I'm the first to have this problem, but I can find no useful wisdom out there. I'd be comfortable with pretty much any underlying database mechanism: MySQL, SQL Server, MS Access, but ideally something generally SQL based (I may eventually have to transition this entire system to draw from a client's SQL database, though that's not an overriding concern now). Other than that I want simplicity and efficiency. I thought my old ODBC techniques would work, and to some extent they do, though modifying tables seemed to have bizarre problems (no errors, but not modifications either).
I do have a fairly aggressive deadline to show some algorithm results, so my focus in the short term is to get something reasonable working *in* the short term - in other words, it's less important to me to pick the 'fastest' relational database than it is to pick a database that lets me focus on coding the algorithms, not working through tedious data access coding. If this db could be any smaller, I'd have tried to do it all 'in memory' at least for proving concepts; I don't want to have to learn an entire jargon and approach just to be able to retrieve data points.Perhaps I'll need to bite the bullet and just write something myself, a .dll perhaps just to save and restore large time series vectors. It seems a bit frightening to me that one would have to do this in this age, what with all the database systems out there, but I don't have much time to work through arcane interface logic.

I have a custom object that I would like to turn into a Collection that could then be used in a BindingSource. From what I've read, I can Inherit Collection(Of T) where T is my specific object. Then I can Implement IBindingListView. This is all great, but I have no idea how to actually use the IBindingListView Interface. I know I want to be able to sort and filter my collection, so I have the following.
Imports System.ComponentModel
Public Class ChemicalCollection
Inherits Collections.ObjectModel.Collection(Of Chemical)
[code]....
As you can see, I haven't really done anything other than let Visual Studio fill in the required properties and methods when I implemented the interface.

basically add and remove text and selection information from a stack. Result: When using Undo/Redo the selection got messed up, the text moved, sometimes causing lag of epic proportions. I need a way of having complete and smooth undo/redo class for storing all information I would possible need.How to know whether or not to add an undo stack is easy, I just checked if the user clicked in the text or moved using the arrow keys. As soon a previous marking was given for "next text change needs to be backed up", it was backed up. At that point I stored the RTF and selection start/length. What do I have to store of a RichTextbox control to be able to restore it to a previous state, and how can I reset it back to a previous state? See it as having a "RichTextBoxState" class:
Public Class RichTextBoxState
Sub New(ByVal RTB As RichTextBox)
Me.text = RTB.RTF
Me.selectionstart = RTB.SelectionStart
[code]....
After restoring it must display the EXACT same thing as when it was saved as a state.

PROJECT TYPE: Windows Forms Application
LANGUAGE: Visual Basic
.NET VERSION: 3.5
IDE: Visual Studio 2008
OPTION STRICT: on
OPTION EXPLICIT: ON
I am developing a parental control application containing a feature that logs a user off of the computer after an administratively set period of time. I do not however want the application to continue counting time against the time limit when the user is not active on the computer. EXAMPLE: Child logs on and is active for an hour then leaves computer for 45 minutes to get dinner. The session timer needs to ignore the 45 minutes of inactivity. I have thought of two ways to accomplish this.
1) Use a SystemEvents.SessionSwith event (to detect the Start Menu > Log Off > SwitchUser action), or
2) Use an event which would detect user inactivity in excess of a set time, e.g. 5 minutes (similar to a screensaver).
Either event would call a method which would simulate a pause feature (as StopWatch and Timer have no pause support that I know of). I believe the 2nd option would prove to be more universally affective as 1) some users do not have Fast User Switching enabled, and 2) users would be required to manually switch users in order to prevent their inactive time from counting against them. My problem arises when I attempt to implement one of these methods. According to the IntelliSense error checking engine, I have absolutely no clue how to do either of these tasks in spite of the research I have conducted on the topic. I would prefer to go with the system idle time approach.

I am upgrading from Visual Studio 2003 to Visual Studio 2008. ow I should upgrade my project.My project is in Visual Basic.Net, and using an Access 2003 Database. I have four datasets, MainDataSet (for the main data tables) LookupDataSet (for lookup tables States, Countries, Colors, etc) OneFormDataSet (data used on only one form) and ReportsDataSet (data used for reports).I have one form "OleDbAdpatForm.vb", that has all the OleDbDataAdpaters for my project. It also has the DataSets and the OleDbConnection.I have public functions that enable me to load the data tables.
I have a LoadTable function when I can pass a column and a value, and the SQL select command is updated with a WHERE or HAVING, so only the requested data is selected. I also can pass the whole "WHERE ..." part of the SQL select command, so I can have multiple parameters in the SELECT command.On my other forms, I have copies of the DataSets, so I can design grids/controls. In the form_Load events, I manually bind the controls to DataSets and tables in located "OleDbAdpatForm.vb", so all forms are using the same data tables, and changes made to data in one form are reflected in data in other forms.The VS 2008's DataSources, BindingSources and TableAdapters seem much easier to use. how I should implement the new data features in my application?
