VS 2008 - Matching Comboboxes With Main Form
Jun 13, 2010I have a combobox on my main form and it lists geographical locations that the user creates. How do I make the combo-boxes on the sub forms match the one on the main form?

View 1 RepliesI need to select all the comboboxes on a form with a for each loop. I have about 19 comboboxes and I need to select each one. I tried to do
for each box as combobox in me.controls
But that gave me an error and i now tried this:
for each box as control in me.controls
if box.name.contains("ComboBox") then
...
end if
next
That selected only the comboboxes but the problem is i need to access some data that is specific to comboboxes (aka the selected item(s), if its blank) but those properties are not present since "box" is a control, not a combo box.
Is there a simple way to make all comboboxes on a form to be readonly upon form load?
Rather than doing:
ComboBox1.ReadOnly = True
Combobox2.ReadOnly = True
And so on...
I have a SCADA program I'm working on, I need to add sum sort of paging when the user hits the page up/down button. I have about 100 station to show. I can fit 28 stations on one screen at 1280 X 1024.
View 4 RepliesAs of the moment I have 24 buttons that are keys to a piano.24 of the button codes have a call method that calls the note to be played.24 of the private subs that are called have an .wav audio playback command within them. I was hoping I could move the .wav private subs into a separate class, and just call them from my main form, therefore cleaning up the lines of code I have at the moment. [code]That example only counts for one Button "The Key of C", and the audio file that is called with it. Multiply that by 24 and you get a big mess of repetitive junk. Can I move the audio subs into a class and call them from my main form?
View 16 RepliesMy app works fine on the development machine and 3 other machines. However, some machines just show the main login box and then fail to show the main screen. There is no error message. I installed VS 2008 express on on of such machines and when i compile the project, the following errors appear:
Type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.Application' is not defined.
Type 'dao.DBEngine' is not defined.

What I'd like to do is in my application move a control like a groupbox or frame with content on it from e.g the main form to a tabpage on that same main form using code.
I can change the position of the control using it's location, but I haven't got a clue on how to move it from the main form to a tabpage, or from 1 tabpage to another.
-Is this at all possible and if so, how can it be achieved?
Ok Guys what id like to do is Have a set of buttons across the top of my form and when the user clicks one id like the botom of the form to change to reflect that click. Kind of like the Office 2k7 ribbon but apply that to the whole for
View 3 Replieshow to raise an event.I have a class that does some calculation using a For... Next loop, from 0 to 100.How would I return the value to the main form AFTER each iteration is completed? How would I raise the event? I have read the documentation but I can't wrap my head around this.
View 8 RepliesI have an app that connects to a remote database. The connection to the database is triggered by the form load event of the main start up form which prompts the user for user name and a password. Here is my problem:Sometimes it takes a number of seconds for the database connection to be established after the user has double clicked the desktop icon. this means that during this period it appears that no action is taking place until the startup form becomes visible. Some impatient users assume that nothing is happening and double click the icon again. What I want to do is to have a graphic image or something pop up on the screen immediately when the program starts that displays something like 'Connecting To Database, please be patient"
View 1 RepliesI have need for a customised form as the main page of my app, what I'm looking for is to create an amoebic shaped form, something like this. I realize that my 'window' will by nature need to be rectangular and that i will need it to have no titlebar and transparent edges, also i will need to have 'regions' on this form that will allow the form to be closed and turned into a standard rectangular form. I have no idea where to begin with doing this but I hope and presume it is possible with vb.net. The image I have used is for illustrative purposes only, i don't plan to do exactly this (my app is a database not a media player for one thing) If having it is a breach of copyright in this context I will remove it.
View 39 RepliesQ1: How can i make it so that my window that i want to show as a drop down does not appear to take the focus off the main form that is calling it?
Q2: The form that is dropping down has the FormBorderStyle Property set to None - thus the window does not have a drop down shadow - how can I make the popup window have a shadow?
I an trying to create a GUI and I have added a menu strip, under the tools section of the menu strip, I have added a settings option. I want to click settings and have it open another windows form linked to the main windows form with the menustrip in order to set certain parameters. How do I link these two boxes using the settings menu strip?
View 1 RepliesAm devloping an application with multiple forms, which reside on top of a main form. i.e the main application window. The 'child' forms do not need to be linked in any way as they do not pass information to the parent form, as all the parent form does is act as main window. Now I would like to know what is the correct way for the 'main window' form acting as a container for the other forms? So that all the smaller secondary forms stay focused on top of the main application form, that when the main window is minimized, so these forms should do also etc..
I have read other posts and they mention, leaving all the forms standard i.e. IsMdiContainer = False and then using form.showDialog() to call the secondary forms. This did not work for me as what happens is that as soon as I give focus to the main app form, the secondary form disappears underneath.I tired making the main app form IsMdiContainer = True and when it loads calling:
frmMemberForm.MdiParent = Me
Now this works, because I can click off the form and minimize the app etc and the frmMemberForm doesn't disappear. However if i close the MemberForm and reopen it, it looses this property and once again when it looses focus, it will disappear.
A program I'm developing launches dialog boxes to get information from the user. Right now, the user can still click on and manipulate the main form while the dialog box is open. How can I make the main form inaccessible until the user closes the dialog box?
View 2 Repliesthis is a subset of a previously posted problem, I have narrowed down my issue and am reposting a question from this thread: [URL] I have apparently confused the compiler by renaming some comboboxes in Visual Basic .net express? (See relevant code below) I think the confusion is in who should handle what, with two routines named with variations of ComboBox1 and one handling the other ( it confuses me just trying to interpret it mentally):

I have a main form that has a button with which a smaller form is shown. Think of the smaller form as the Find/Replace dialog in many applications, such as Notepad. It's important that the form is (what I believe is called) modal. What I mean is that it always stays on top of the main form. I ensure that by calling the Show method with "Me" as the owner argument. Whenever the small form loses focus it will not disappear into the background but stay visible (albeit out of focus). If you don't understand open up Notepad and have a look at the behavior of the Find/Replace dialog.
Here's my problem: instead of actually closing the form when the X is pressed, I want it to simply Hide itself, so its position and the state of any controls (checkboxes etc) is preserved automatically. To achieve this I simply cancel the FormClosing event and Hide it:
vb.net
Private Sub Form2_FormClosing(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles MyBase.FormClosing
[code]....
To show the form, I use the following (note the (Me) to make the main form the owner of the form; this ensures that it remains visible even when it is out of focus):
vb.net
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Form2.Show(Me)
End Sub
Now. When I run my project, and open the Form2 (small form), then hide it again (by 'closing' it), I can no longer close the main form (Form1)! It seems the main form cannot close when the small form still exists (albeit invisible)...?? When I don't use the Me argument in the Show method, I don't get the behavior I want. I know I can set the TopMost property to True but that will also cause it to become visible on top of all the other forms, even windows not part of my application.
I have a form with 4 comboboxes and a button. The first combobox is enabled, but the rest of the controls are disabled. When the form is opened I fill the first combobox (cbxMethod) with a datatable. When the user selects something in cbxMethod the next combobox (cbxStudy) will be filled and so on. When the last combobox (cbxAnalyte) has a selected value I want to enable the button and give it focus so the user can move forward with the program. I basically want to force the user to move from one combobox to the other, until all are filled.I am currently using the SelectionValueChange event, but this event only fires when the user changes the value with their mouse or hits the Enter key, not when the user hits the Tab key.
Public Class frmCalculatedAnalyte
Private cv_dt As New DataTable
Public Sub New()
[code]....
unfortunately searching the web i cannot find a decent example that allows me to loop through a winform to make sure comboboxes items are selected.basically what i would like to do is check the form if the comboboxes have been selected if not then highlight them yellow and set the focus on them.
View 8 RepliesI have the following problem, a table "table1" contains 10000 telephone numbers, this table is source for 5 combo box contained in a form, I need that when I select the first tel N in the first combo, this number is not any more available for the combo 2, when I select the second number in the second combo, the first 2 numbers of the table 1 are not any more available for the combo 3 etc. Every record (in form) contains 5 combo. The Tel N selected into the combo are source for other table called "table2". I've try with all the type of query between table 1 and table 2, and use the result as source for the combo, I've try with IIf but this is works only for the first combo.

I'm using VB 2005 and have an Edit - Entry form with Textboxes and several Comboboxes. I populate the Comboboxes with Arraylists as shown below. I populate a datatable with the Employee data from my SQL Server. I assign the BindingSource1.Datasource to my Datatable then add Databindings to the ComboControls. The (Fields.STAFF_MGR_ID.ToString) is from an Enum. When all is complete my textbox fields Bind and move with the MoveNext.. no problem, but the comboboxes display nothing.

Is there any way to detect the area under a form window. e.g I want to create a grid and use what's in that grid to match patterns.orIs there any way to take a screenshot of the area under a form?
I have been searching all over for something that will do this and the only thing I managed to find was [URL]..I do not however want it for this application (If I really wanted to cheat at a game I would buy the software). But this is a perfect example of the pattern matching I wish to achieve.Edit: OK scratch that... I have managed to take a csreenshot of the region under a form, now has anyone any experience in pattern matching images?
i have my main child form open. then i show the new form:
[Code]...
but when the form opens it flickers a lot. so i want move the new form behind the main form while it loads so the user does not see the flicker. once it is done loading i will set the form to topmost. how do i move the new form behind the main form?
I have spent a long time trying to find a solution for the problem I am having with comboboxes within a child form. I'm sure this must be a Microsoft error and not something I'm doing wrong..The best way to explain the problem would be to tell you what I have done so far:
If you open a new Project in VB and add two Windows Forms. Form1 will be the parent. Form2 will be the child. On Form1 add 1 x panel(Form2 will open up within the panel so make sure the panel is big enough to fit Form2) and 1 x button. The only code needed for this form is:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
[Code]...
Now run the program and click button1 to open form2 (form2 should now open within panel1).
The comboboxes and textboxes lose some of there functions for example:
1. You cant set focus on combobox without hitting drop-down
2. You cant highlight text properly in either the combobox or textbox.
3. You cant set the cursor index position using your mouse in the combobox or text box.
Does anyone know a way around this?? Mainly for the combobox as I've got some functions working for the textbox.
I been trying to create a section for my program to change the backgroundimage property of the main form. let me show the code: (some parts may be bad written but I was trying to try to find the problem) this code is a click event from a button
[Code]...
Dim frm As Form
For Each frm In Forms
Set frm = Nothing
Next frm
The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?
I have created a form with three comboboxes. means
FirstNameComboBox
MiddleNameComboBox
LastNameComboBox
All fields are select ( name ) from a "CustomerName" table. "CustomerName" table is have more than ten thousand records. I am use three binding sources its worked great but it is very slow bcz three comboboxes are filled data on form loading time. I am using visual studio 2010 (visual basic).
I have a tool window that I want to stay above the main application form, but not stay on top of all windows forms. Similar to the floating properties window for visual studio - it always stays on top of the main VS window, but if I select another program, like internet explorer, the floating properties window will be behind internet explorer.
What I have is an application that has several forms that may be displayed at the same time. I have a Messages form that displays messages generated by the code in the form, that gives the status of the application. Obviously, the user would not normally be working on this form, but they may want it to be visible to see the status messages from the program (File saved confirmations, etc). So, my two options right now are I can set the form to be on top of all other windows forms or, when the user clicks on the main application form, the messages form would be hidden by the main form.
my web browser is my main form and it has a number of sub forms , how can i set it that when i close the main form my sub forms dont close ?
