VS 2010 Using A String Value Throughout The Whole Application?

Jun 5, 2012

When a user logs in, i have to use its name for several things such as when it creates an invoice, i have to save the name of that person who has created the invoice or if someone has deleted an invoice, i have to save the name. I was thinking of storing that user's name in a global variable and then access it everytime i need it. Is that the best practice to do it?

VS 2010 Make An Application Which Will List All Processes In A String When It Starts?

Jun 8, 2011

I am trying to make an application which will list all processes in a string when it starts. After it has listed them all I enable my timer, and in the timer there gets checked if the process is in the process list (string), and if it isn't it will add it to my listbox. The only problem is, it's not working, it's never adding an item.

vb.net

Public Class Form1 Dim AllProcesses As String Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load 'The first check For Each p In System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcesses() If AllProcesses = "" Then AllProcesses = p.ProcessName Else AllProcesses += "|" + p.ProcessName End

VS 2010 Retrieve Currently Active Application Window From Another Application Just Starting Up

May 26, 2011

I am in need of a small application, that will allways be topmost and will send keystrokes to the last active application (typically notepad or an explorer window). My problem is retrieving the current active form (or application), when my application is started up. Every search seems to return old and rather complex solutions using Win32 library functions, but I was kinda hoping, that .Net allowed for a neater and more simple solution.I need a code example or link on how to retrieve the currently active application window from another application just starting up.

I'm developing a TextBox Component that is suited for handling passwords. I was using A string Builder to hold the password But now I discovered the Secure String! I've heard you can convert it to a BSTR and then use windows API to read the memory location and convert that to a string.

VS 2010 Storing Application Data Within An Application

Jan 8, 2012

I was wondering if it's possible to store application data within an application without storing the data in an external file. For example, in my application, the user can choose where he/she would like to store the files that the application creates. I need to make the application remember the location that the user specified. I've tried using My.Settings to save this information, but since my application is standalone, if the location of the application changes, the My.Settings information changes as well (unless I coded it incorrectly before). I would prefer not to store this data in a .txt file or something similar.

Visual Studio 2010, Outlook 2010 And Windows Application, Return Emails?

Jan 5, 2011

At present I have wrote an application (in-house CRM, vb .net 2010) which allows me to send emails under the selected customer & I categorised these emails. As these are categorised I can return data to display email history in my program by using search criteria:

Dim oMail As Outlook.MAPIFolder = oNS.GetDefaultFolder(Outlook.OlDefaultFolders.olFolderSentMail)
Dim sSearch As String
sSearch = "[Categories] = '" + "[" + tAccount.Text.Trim + "]" + "(" + tShipTo.Text.Trim + ")'"
Dim oItems As Outlook.Items = oMail.Items.Restrict(sSearch)

However the limitation to the above is it only looks at sent items & no other folder. My ideal solution would be to display all email correspondence for a certain contact.

VS 2010 Init String Size In .NET 2010?

Oct 25, 2011

I have an app that calls a DLL, and passes a string to it (by reference). The DLL then fills the string and passes it back to the app. Before calling the DLL, the string must be sized correctly to fit the data the DLL is going to pass it. In the past (using VB.NET 2003) I just initialized the string with the correct number of spaces. This always seemed silly to me and I'm wondering if, in VB.NET 2010, there is a way to do this using a number to define the size?

Connection String Obtains Its Value In A .net 2008 Application?

Jul 16, 2011

I am trying to understand how a connection string obtains its value in a vb.net 2008 application. By stepping through code,I found that a connection string obtained its value from the following line of code:

RemotingConfiguration.Configure("Useall.Desktop.exe.config", false);

By doing a search on the .net application, I found the Useall.Desktop.exe.config file in the bin/debug folder of the application. Thus I am wondering if the connection string information is initally obtained from the Useall.Desktop.exe.config file or would it obtain its inital values from an app.debug.config file?Would you explain the .net remoting and configuration manager interdependency to me? If they are separate items?

Use Of Variables Across Several Forms In Application - String Manipulation?

May 5, 2010

I am a beginner trying to write code. I am creating an application that is a questionaire with 3 forms that have questions for the user with text boxes, list boxes, and check boxes for response. Some of the text boxes with the user response are on different forms. Will that cause me problems? I would like to write code that will combine a literal string with responses from text boxes and string snippets which are inserted based on check box condition. I think I would like to create the string to be printed to a RichTextBox and then output to peripheral printer. How do I make inserting or not inserting a string based on check box condition? How can I trim the response string to allow a output string without annoying extra spaces and such?

Use Query String In An Excel Hyperlink To ASP.Net Web Application?

Aug 19, 2009

I want to pass some data between an existing excel application and an existing ASP.Net VB Webforms application.

I thought a hyperlink with some query string variables would be the most straightforward means of doing this. However, it seems that the hyperlink does not retain the session of the logged in user.

Testing this with the same URL on a webpage does work. So it seems Excel is starting a new session. Any ideas on how to make Excel hyperlinks behave the same way a browser hyperlink does?

Converting Textbox String - Application That Has 2 Textboxes And A Button

Jan 10, 2010

Basically I have an application that has 2 textboxes and a button. What I am trying to do is when the button is clicked, it takes an entered string from box one (which is validated to only accept numbers) adds 235 to it then converts it to hex and finally reverse the string and sets textbox two equal to that value. Note that the final string has to be eight digits so the string may needed to be padded with zeros before the string is reversed. With that said how could I go about doing this? Also I do plan to add 2 more textboxes and another button to undo this process but I am thinking if I can figure out do it one way writing the code to undo the process shouldn't be too hard.

FileName As String - Application Installed Randomly Locks Up

Dec 23, 2010

I have a quite simple application that is having some random locks up. It's just a few text fields that the user fill it up, 3 sets of Radio buttons, one of them with flags to chose the language and click the PDF button. The application uses iTextsharp to load a PDf template, insert the text into it, depending on the language loads some extra text from a .xml file, and depending on the radio button removes the images from the PDF, closes the pdfstamper and uses [Code] to open the file with whatever PDF application the user have installed and closes itself.

Sounds simple, but after the application is installed in the machine (never in debugging mode) it randomly locks up the application. I tried re-publish the application commenting out the Start(filename) line and the thing stopped locking. And I double checked it, re-publish with the line again and it locked after just a few attempts. [Code]

IDE :: Application With Multiple String Resource Files (not Localization)?

Apr 9, 2009

I have a question abour string type resources and hope this is the proper place to ask it.I know how to create a string (type) resource file. I also know how one localizes this file by adding the appropriate language abbreviation (i.e., es, en, etc.) after the name of the file (i.e., str_resource.es.resource).None of this is terribly difficult. However, I haven't been able to fine how to do what I want to do.

Specifically, because I have an enormous number of strings (button labels, labels, registry strings [key_names and values, etc.), error messages and such) I would like to create multiple string resource files - one for each of these items. For example:
