We are creating a Chat Application for our chatnetwork, we originally made it in VB6 works like a beauty and converting to VB.NET At the moment, it joins the channel fine, nothing wrong with this displays everything it needs to however we are in the process of showing emoticons.While we were on XP in debug mode and release mode, the emoticons showed... Once we moved the compiled version over to Vista Home and Ulitmate the emoticons would not show, we have looked and looked all over google and have not come to a conclusion, today we even moved the whole Project folder over to Vista, ran it in debug mode, and the images still wouldn't show in the RTB. View 1 RepliesI am writting an application that stores data in an Access database. I can't put the files in the Program Files directory since standard users can't write to that folder. I can't use a 'user' folder since multiple users will need to access the same file. In addition to accessing the file, users on occassion will copy new versions of the file into the folder, overwritting the old file.Where should I put this file? I am thinking the ProgramData folder, but when I create that folder during the install, it is also read-only for a standard user.I'm lost as to where I should put a file that can be accessed by multiple users, that is read/write, and I can install the folder into the location. I don't think I have a programmatic way of installing a file into the Public users folder.

View 1 RepliesI'm having some problems with people saving text files using my program, but only people using Vista. Since I don't use Vista myself, I'm not sure what this is but it's not a problem on any machine running XP.
Note that my file saves just using the standard Savedialog box and Filestream/Writeline commands.
From what my customers are telling me, the save dialog comes up fine and there is no error as the file appears to save, but when they look for the completed text file, there's nothing there.

View 3 RepliesI have a user of one of my programs reporting that they get an "access to the path...is denied" error during this section of [code]He's using Windows 7 x64 with UAC turned on. The location of "FilePath" is a subdirectory inside Program Files (x86) in this case.I tried to reproduce the error on my Windows 7 x64 system by enabling UAC (I usually have it off) but the program worked fine. However, in my case, "FilePath" is not in a protected system folder like Program Files (where write permissions are not given to normal users without admin elevation).So I tried to recreate this situation on one of my Vista x86 Virtual PCs where the "FilePath" would be inside Program Files. However, my program again worked fine. It had no problems writing to the Program Files folder with a normal user account, UAC turned on and no elevated permissions required.
Thus, I am confused. Why does it work for me and not for him? I want to try an x64 virtual machine but I can't with the software I have (Virtual PC doesn't support x64 guest OSs, VirtualBox won't run the software that my program interacts with). So maybe you guys can help me instead. Are the write permissions for the Program Files (x86) folder different between x86 and x64, or maybe even Vista and 7?

View 5 RepliesWe have code in our former VB6 application, that ported fine to VB.NET, that plays a simple AVI file of the typical "flying folders" and "spinning maginfying glass" AVI. Under Windows XP, our application ran fine and everything was good.
Then we had customers start using Vista and Win7 and this stuff crashes. We were using the MS Common Controls (SP4) and then (SP6) - utilizing the Animation player. Now - these dont work and we get nasty errors.
I searched Microsoft and the web to answer the "what now?" question and though there are numerous suggestions, none of them work. We cant use Media Player because we dont want any menu - just the graphic. We dont know why, with the cool tools given in .NET, there is no animation player (seems a huge oversight...) But we need to get "unstuck" on this one, and we need that fast...
So, How does on play a simple AVI file using VB.NET code? What DLL or OCX does Microsoft recommend and is there a place we can find some sample code for it?
We have an application written with VB .Net (framework 2) that needs to run both XP and Vista machines. The XP machines have office 2003 while the Vista machines have office 2007.The application needs to generate reports as excel files. But when the files are created with xls extension the office 2007 in vista doesn't like the extnesion and gives a message before opening file about the file format.Is there a way to ensure through code that the correct file extension supported by the office version on the machine is used.v

The only way to get it work is to run the application as an administrator. Is it possible to set the image windows displays when viewing a file created in a VB.NET application? In my case I have files saved that store info on football plays for a play creator program. Can I use the image of that play as what the user will see when he searches through windows explorer?
Let me further explain with an analogy: photo files in windows have their images displayed as the user cycles through them; he chooses which one he wants to doubleclick based on the thumbnail image of the actual photo. I'd like to have a "photo" of the play itself shown instead of what is now just a blank generic grey icon for the play files that I save.

View 4 RepliesI am been working on an a small app that has a Forms.Webbrowser control that navigates to a Adobe Flash program. I have developed the app on Vista 32bit platform and have had no problems. I have sent the app to a couple of people to test out and one is using Vista 64bit and is running into a problem. I know the webbrowser control just uses the underlying base framework of IE. The problem on the 64 bit machine is when the site is navigated to it says that it needs to have Flash installed. When the user goes to Adobe's site it says they need to use a 32bit browser.
As stated on Adobe site here:[URL] the Flash player need to be in a 32 bit browser. What options do I have to be able fix this problem? Is there another control that I can use that would be the same in a 32bit platform and 64bit platform? Besides navigating to the Flash program, the browser also goes to standard web pages.
I'm working on a program where I've got a WebBrowser control that displays an HTML file from my 'Resources' folder. Like so... WebBrowser1.DocumentText = My.Resources.MyHTMLFile That displays the text from the HTML file just fine, but it does not display the CSS styles or images that the HTML file uses (even though I've added the CSS file and images to the 'Resources' folder as well).

I am making futile attempts to get the DataGridView control in a Windows Form to disply several rows of images. The images are all contained on the local disk. The names of the image files (all .JPG or .GIF files) are taken from an XML file. The XML is not the issue, since some of of the images actually appear.
The control has three DataGridViewImageColumn objects. Each column is set up to display a file called Blank.gif which is a transparent GIF containing a single pixel. Later, during the form's Load event, I replace each cell's Value property with the image that the XML file says should be in the column. The XML file contains the name of the file, and I use the System.Drawing.Image.FromFile() method to create the image object from the file name.
The behavior I am experiencing is that that only the very last row of images is properly displayed. The rows above it display the Blank.gif file as if they had never been assigned their intended images. If I change the code so that it will only iterate through three images (one row), all the images show up in the grid. If I then change the code so that six images are processed, only the second row of images is diplayed, and the first row shows only the Blank.gif file's image content. If I change the code to process nine images, the first six show up as blank, and the last three in the final row are properly displayed.
I have lost a considerable amount of my little remaining hair trying to fix this problem to no avail.
