It formats a Date obtained from a DatePicker control into a "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss" string format to send to a hardware device to be stored via Serial Port retrieves the date from the device and displays to user What I'm trying to do is port the code for use in a Socket rather than Serial Port which wants a Byte Arrray of the same Date Time string variable. I can't figure out how to encode and convert to Bytes the string value used in the Serial Port version. The evolution of the process is listed from top to bottom.

May 16, 2011Is it possible in VB to truncate a larger data type ( an int with a value greater than 255) to a smaller one, say a Byte (which only goes up to 255) in a way such that the 8LSBs of the integer are copied to the newly created byte. I have tried this using CType with the following code, however it does not work.

Where the variable "Test" is an integer with a value of 419. This code always results in the Overflow exception.

Output from calling the sub routine multiple times.

As a workaround, I have a new routine that uses a custom round function to properly store only 2 decimal places - as the VB round function does not perform the type of rounding desired.I understand that we are removing the value from the dictionary and adding it back..
