Password Characters - Get A Textbox Being Using For Password Entry To Display The Black Circle

Feb 10, 2009

How do you get a textbox being using for password entry to display the black circle that you often see in web forms, on the iphone etc etc?

I can change the PasswordChar property to an asterisk no problem and even copying and pasting symbols inserted into Word seemed to work - just couldn't find a symbol that looked like a bullet point!

Can this actually be achieved for a standalone exe, or is it something unique to web forms? Surely copying and pasting symbols from Word isn't actually the answer?

Checkboxes Doesn't Post Back - Checkbox On GridView Always Returning False

Jan 22, 2012

I have a GridView with a Checkbox on the first column: Code: The thing is that the Checkbox.Checked always returns False. How can I get the checked state of the Checkboxes in this scenario? Or what would be the best approach into updating the aforementioned column? P.S. Note that click on the checkboxes doesn't post back. Nothing happens on the page until the user clicks Save (and that is the intended behavior).

Retry Method On Exception?

Oct 18, 2010

I'm currently working on trying to improve the amount and quality of exception handling I do in my code and one thing that I am trying to figure out how to do is retry a method if it fails.

The an example of the circumstances when I would want to do this is for SqlExceptions. One of our clients has a poor network that means that occasionally connecting to SQL Server times out, but if we try again immediately afterwards it will work perfectly. While I could possibly call the method from itself, I would rather not do that just in case there is a permanent error and then we'll get into a infinite loop, which is not what we want.

I was wondering whether anyone has any advice on how may be a good way of going about dealing with problems like this.[cod]e...

Balloon Text Needed For When Mouse Curser Hovers Over An Object?

Jan 7, 2010

My project is working well, without any problems and I just need to add another feature, if it is possible.I'm looking for a way to be able to have a Text Balloon (I'm not sure if this is the correct description or not) that will appear when the mouse curser hovers over an object in order to display text, letting the user know exactly what this particular object does. For instance, the text balloon would say: "Download Link" when the mouse hovers over a picture or maybe "Opens Software Window".In one case it does "Open" a new window when clicked on, but I need a balloon pop-up text to say that it will open a new window.

Asp.net - TextBox Password Mode Filling Itself?

Aug 22, 2011

I have a website where the user enters a combinations of login and password to enter.I have some other page where the user has the ability to change the password. I added there 3 textboxs in password mode (actual, new, and confirm). The odd thing is that the first textbox is being filled automatically with the password that i enter on login and that is stored in Firefox. If i do this on IE (where i don't have the password saved) this doesn't happen. Also, this issue completely solves itself if i change the mode on the textboxs.Am i missing something here? I obvisouly don't want the password to be filled automatically which would take away the whole purpose of the textbox.

ASP.NET UpdatePanel Lock All TextBox Controls After Post-back?

Nov 2, 2010

My code behind is VB.NET. I use ASP.NET UpdatePanel like the following. However, after the post-back, it locks TextBox controls , I cannot type anything, except when I move the mouse over and click on the TextBox.

why it locked all TextBox controls after the post-back?

Here's why I use UpdatePanel:

During the post-back, after inserting data into DB, set all TextBox text property to String.Empty After the form is submitted, the Panel pStudent should be refresh , not the entire page and the TextBox txtId should be in focus again.

here's the mark-up of the ASP.NET page: [URL]

VS 2010 Keeping A Password Textbox Secure?

Jul 29, 2010

I've never really used the SecureString class before but I've got a requirement in an app to have a user enter a password that will be used later in the application, and I figure SecureString is the most secure way to do this.

I have created a little dialog form where the user will enter their username and password and have set the UseSystemPasswordChar property of the password textbox to True. As I need to keep the password in memory for use later though, I have created a property in my main form that is of type SecureString and when the user enters their password into the dialog window I copy the string from the password box to the SecureString property like so:

vb.net
For i As Integer = 0 To LoginFrm.PasswordBox.TextLength - 1
Me.ConnectionPassword.AppendChar(LoginFrm.PasswordBox.Text(i))
Next

I figured out how to get the original string back when I need to (with only a slight hint from the documentation I might add ), which I do like this:

Dim OriginalString As String = Marshal.PtrToStringBSTR(Marshal.SecureStringToBSTR(Me.ConnectionPassword))

but the problem I have is that I want the user to have the option to edit the password they already entered if they want to. This is a problem because I want to avoid putting the real password back into the password box for security reasons, but then if I just put some random characters in there (just to show that their password has been remembered by the app) and then the user clicks OK on the login diaog form then it will update my ConnectionPassword property and set it to the random characters.
One option would be to set the passwordbox text to something specific each time and then test to see if that is what the text is set to when they click Ok (and if it is then obviously dont update the ConnectionPassword property) but this seems pretty rubbish because its possible (however unlikely) that the user could actually select that word as a password.

Any better suggestions? Perhaps its not worth doing anything at all and just use a normal string as the SecureString is going to have to get converted back to a normal string at some point to be used.

Compare What You Type Into A Textbox To A Randomly Generated Password?

May 8, 2012

I am setting up a game for my final visual basic program in my computer programming class, and it is supposed to compare what you type into a textbox to a randomly generated password, and then return whether the last character you entered had a higher, lower or the exact same ascii value as the corresponding character in the randomly generated password. Well, in order to test it, I set up labels to compare the two characters... when you type in ALT + 125, the ascii value returns 125, as it should, and it says that the ascii value of the correct character is 142. I typed in ALT + 142, and the character's ascii value, according to what the label puts out, is 196... obviously its converting dec into hex or oct or something... but how do I fix it?I can also tell you that when I typed in 196 to see if it was reversed or something stupid like that, it printed that the ascii value was 49... what's up with that?!
