Where should I go to leanr to program stuff like getting keystrokes, locking keyvoards, changing desktop backgrounds, opening CD trays, changing IE homepage, etc.... Basically everything windows... I'm using VB.NET right now. Is there an api or something to learn for this kind of stuff?
View 10 Repliesmy program has a tray icon and i want it to show up in the system tray. so i went into my windows notification area and set it to show icon for my app. But when my app update to a new version with clickonce, it will think its a new app and i have to set it again. Is there a way that it will treat all new version as the same program and i dont have to keep setting it?
View 3 RepliesI want to make an app which on loading sits in the system tray and even after I open another program (say notepad or vlc or anything) i.e. even when the app is not in focus and if I press "G" on my keyboard, the tray icon should show a tool tip - "key G is pressed". I have tried several codes but nothing works when the app goes out of focus. I can use Register Hot Key [url] but it needs a modifier also (like Ctrl or Alt etc. along with my key G). So, is there any way I can achieve this? something which many tray icons do like antivirus apps, etc. and I do not want to use AutoHotkey application.

I am making a customizable launcher for a game.I have already made the launcher. now I want to make a program that can edit stuff on my launcher. A method that Im thinking is make the editor produce a file that the launcher can read.Are you getting what I mean?
There are 2 buttons in the launcher,1 webbrowser and 1 progress bar.The 2 button are links for the users personal website the webbrowser is for the news panel where they can put there news about the game and 1 progress bar for auto updating of the game.
about a week since I started. Now I'll just ask my questions straight away:I want to make a program which allows the User to create stuff, say a survey. What I want them to be able to do is,
1. Decide the headline
2. Decide the layout of the survey
3. Import pictures
4. create new pages, like a form.
And then save this survey to a file which can be opened either by itself or by using some sort of viewer program. And I want the user to be able to put in answers to questions in the survey which wont be visible when you open the file in the viewer program. Now I dont expect you to write the program for me, just give me ideas on how to solve them, where I can learn about methods to get there and so on.

1)How can I make my program get the contents of a .txt file on my website to tell the program to run or not?Here is and example of what I want:Say the file says "Running", the program would run without problems.If the file was to say "Unavailable", a pop up would appear saying "The program is currently unavailable, try again later." Then once the person clicked OK, the program would close.
2)How can I make the program get contents from a .txt file to get the latest version of the program, then if there is a newer version, there would be a pop up saying there is a newer version and they need to update. Then when they clicked OK, the program would close and it would open their default web browser or Internet Explorer to the update page.

1. My app starts with windows and is hidden in the system tray.
2. When IE starts my app gives a popup that your time has started at "Whatever the time at the moment would be".
3. When user closes its time is calculated in a Msgbox.
The problem is how to check if the users opens another IE window while working and add the bill to the same user. To reset the timer when i.e., is closed by first user and second user starts operating. How to start the app with windows and that too in system tray.
I've seen loads of programs that use an icon in the system tray to let you interact with a windows service that is running on your machine but I am curious as to how this works. As I understand it, unless a service marks itself as 'interactive' then it has no way to communicate with the user's desktop and doing so is discouraged by MS (and even causes an alternate desktop to appear temporarily in Server 2008 in some cases). So I want to try and avoid doing this but I cant think how else I would do it, and even if I marked my service as interactive I'm not too sure how I could actually get it to show a notification icon in the system tray.
I assume I would have to use Windows APIs, unless just using the windows forms NotifyIcon class would work. I considered just having the system tray icon in a totally separate application that just communicates with the service via named pipes or TCP etc but I'm pretty sure this isnt how other programs do it because with most of them if you just kill the process that the service is running in then the icon disappears so it must actually be directly running from the service.
I'm about to graduate and I've been applying for jobs. I know some basic programming languages and I asked the guy that I'm going to interview with on Tuesday if there is any specific language or program I should review. He said .Net
I know nothing about this particular language. When I look up info and tutorials I see that there is VB.net, ASP.net, DotNetNuke.
Is there just a regular .Net? Which do you think he is referring to? What is the difference between all of these? Also, can you recommend a good website or video tutorial series to learn the basics as quick as I can?
I have an app that minimizes to the system tray. If I try to run the app again (forgot it was already running in the tray) I have a routine that prevents that. What I want is for that same routine that is running in the second instance to Open the first instance of the app from the system tray.

Im trying to make an application that when you press X, the program gets put in system tray. But i have like no idea how i'm suppost to do that, so did a search on google and found this code. and well it sort of works to what I want but don't know were to go from there.. what I read from another post was that I had to do something with "NotifyIcon Class" but still didn't know what to do with that or where to put the code.
Basically what I want the program to do is minimize to system tray and a tooltip will pop up when I hover my mouse over it and display something that I want. Also when I right click the icon I would like some options to be displayed so that I could program it to close.
I wrote code for checking whether a particular process (Outlook.exe, in my case) is running or not. It is working fine when the Outlook window is open or minimized. But, when the Outlook is minimized to tray (which on the right side of taskbar), my code is not identifying the process.Could anyone please suggest me a way to get the process of Outlook (or any other program) that is minimized to tray?
