View 8 RepliesThis is what I've got so far.I'm needing to access a data table on the server (tblStateCodes), loop through each line and write the contents to a local file (text or CSV).I've trolled the internet but it seems that there are many different examples which have confused me even more.

I am looking for some code to help me backup up my table data to a text file using vb.net, I just want to write all the rows in the table to the text file.
View 1 RepliesI have a Data Table Column with multiple Rows of data. I need to search all lines of TextBox1.Text for any data that is identical to any row in the specified data column ("MCaddRG"). Also any identical findings need to be made into a new text file or a new form with a text box.[code]...
*Also if it is possible I would really like to have a check box list that contains the data from the "Device" columns so I could check the "Device" and then it search the TextBox.Text for the checked "Device's" "MCaddRG"
I need to save a datatable to a binary file , in binary format , in order to make the process fast because the datatable may contain up ten millions rows. So , XML is not favorable because it makes the file large sized , and the process will be slow.
I managed to save the datatable to a binary file , and it works fine , but the problem when I try to add new rows to the existing binary file (using a datatable with the same schema , but different rows data) , it copies the schema of the datatable to the binary file, making it very large.

I'm just new to the forums, so I hope you's don't mind me jumping in and asking a question Currently I am pulling out rows from my Datagridview and sending all rows to a .csv file. I now need to retrieve information from two different datatables and put them into the same .csv file I am using. Below is how I am currently retrieving the first part of my .csv file. The second part will below the rows supplied from the datagrid. Hope somebody could advise me on how i could go about or, or have support links.

I'm looking at an old web app I wrote and it is taking about an hour to read 4500 records from a DataTable so it can write them to a CSV file.
The DataTable contains... 376 columns
At least, I think that's what Excel's NL column converts to. I just looked up the column count now and had no idea there were so many. Our software vendor hasn't realized the value of dynamic sql statements for this process, so every software "upgrade" just keeps adding more columns rather than only selecting the ones needed. I cannot alter the SQL statement that generates the data
Depending on the data type, the data needs to be formatted in a specific format Data does contains special characters, such as commas The slow part is reading the data. Getting the data from the SQL server and writing it to a CSV is fast.
Here's the code. Forgive the mess, I wrote it back when I didn't know what I was doing and when I still was working in VB
Function ReadDataTableForCSV(dt as DataTable)
Dim sb = New StringBuilder()
Dim dataTypes As New Dictionary(Of String, Integer)
[code]....
I have three sub tables that I want to process. For each I want to combine the rows, as they are only different by contents in the second column(I want to do the same to the fourth column, later):
'Sub table 1
xx|C201 |02300877 |Samsung |....
xx|C201 |02300877 |Toshiba |....
xx|C213 |02300877 |Samsung
[code]....
p.s. For the fourth column, Manufacturer information , I want to do the same and I'd probably get something like this for the final table:
xx| C201,C213,C606,C619 |02300877 | Samsung
xx| C201,C213,C606,C619 |02300877 | Toshiba
xx| C303, C305,C712 |02301163
xx| C207, C209, C708 |02301165
I have a trouble making this code work. When executed, it just creates a correct (with the correct name) file with the extension .txt but the the actual text inside .
Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1
Public mytext As String
[code]...
The strange thing is that while debugging, h, t string variables have the correct values, but somehow mystream.write(t) doesnt work (it doesent write anything to my h.txt text file...
Dim _tableBackLogs As System.Data.DataTable
Do While i - 2 > 0
_tableBackLogs = Global.DataAccess.GetDataTable("SELECT SubjectID,SubjectName,Grade FROM SubjectPI WHERE RegNo='" & CInt(HttpContext.Current.Session("userName")) & "' AND Status='Fail' AND Semester='" & i - 2 & "'")
i = i - 2
Doing this replaces the previous data in the DataTable. I want to retain the previous data i.e i want the new rows to be added to the DataTable w/o replacing the previous rows.
I am trying to ping a text file("C:/Domains.txt") which is a list of domains, then have the resulting IP address written to a different text file ("C:/IP_Addresses.txt"). And this action will be done with a Button_Click.
View 8 RepliesI have a very large text file about 4 million lines that I would like to separate into several small text files based on the strings contained in the first column of the text file. I want to open the large text file, choose the lines that apply, create a new text file with a name that has a number at the end of which will match up with the value in the first column of the text file. I want to then copy the applicable lines to the new small text file, save and close it. I'm not sure how to go about doing this after opening the large text file and using the readline method. What if the folder does not exist? Do we have to create it? I want this procedure to be general, as there could be up to 25 million lines in the text file.

I want to split each line at the comma and write the left side to a textbox and the the right side to another textbox. I'm close, with the code below, but I can only post results from the first line in the file. How do I loop this and append the text results in each of the textboxes.

I want to load a csv file (A comma delimited text file) into a datatable. I found the OdbcDataAdapter Class which looks perfect, but it says it is supported only in version 1.1 of the .NET Framework.
Is there a better way to import a csv file into a datatable? the first line has the column headers.
I am using Visual Studio 2008, using version 3.5 of the .NET framework
I've been developing a arcade game, and as every good arcade game, it has an incorporated scoreboard so that players can see who scored better. My problem is that everytime it enters a new scoreline, it deletes all the previous lines in the text file. The code I've been using is the following:
If player1 > 25 Then
objReader.Close()
MsgBox("O " + jogador1 + " ganhou.")[code]............
I've got a program which displays data in a listbox in five columns. All are separated using one or more ControlChars.Tab. I want to write these columns to a text file, however, when I do, my columns lose their alignment. I can change alignment so that it displays nicely in text file, but then it is off in list box. Is there a way to get what I see in my listbox to display the same way in a text file - maybe a different way of separating my columns (not using ControlChars.Tab)?
View 7 RepliesI have a long text file with job descriptions with each description split over 5 rows. (2 examples are below.) I would like to combine each of the 5 rows of the single description into 1 row. so for example the 10 lines below would be combined into 2 rows so that I can then import into SQL server and clean it up. I'm fairly new to vb.net but I've written the code to import the text file and export it again but I need to process it after import.

I have a text file that has several rows and columns. I need to read only 2 columns and then to pass the data to an array or collection. My approach was to read the text line by line and then to remove the unnecessary rows and columns. The format of thetxt file is the following:

View 1 RepliesI am using Visual Studio 2008 on Windows XP SP3. User has Windows 7 Pro (32 bit). The IO code below works for me. The read code works for user, but the write code only works for new files. If the user tries to overwrite a current data file, then no data is written to disk. I have done all the usual IO checking (valid file name, etc.) and have excluded it from my same code. In my app, FileSave and FileSaveAs both call WriteDataFile(FullFileName). Any reasons why FIleSave would work on Windows XP, but not on Windows 7 Pro (32 bit)?
Code:
Public Function ReadDataFile(ByVal FullFileName As String) As Integer
' reads a Data file from disk
'
' Format is a text file, with [TAB] seperators and [CR][LF] as line terminators

View 2 RepliesI have a text file with some call records in it. Each call record states a line in that text file. And what I want to do is that parsing to database with a 100% success rate. Due to sometimes the SQL connection might get buggy or stop or w/e so it came to my mind that I should make some function or maybe a stored procedure to check whether the requested/selected or whole lines in that text file have been successfully added or not to the database. Let's assume I have 10 lines in a text file called "log.txt" like:
call line 1
call line 2
call line 3
call line 4
[code]....
And assuming that the SQL connection to the database got stuck somehow(buggy) and it stopped inserting those lines to their respectively columns. Let's say it parsed lines from 1-6 and it stopped there, that's where I need the app to tell me that it stopped and continue inserting immediately where it stopped at to the end from 6-10th line. What am I supposed to do? The smoothest way so that the processor doesn't get overwhelmed (in case there are like hundreds of thousands lines). And should it be written in SQL as a stored procedure or written as a function from VB side.Toolkit : Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate - VB.Net language & Microsoft SQL Management Studio 2005 - SQL Database.
I'm going nuts with this. Obviously I cannot open the reader ard writer on the same file simultaneously.
