Accessing A SQL Database From VB Express 2008?
May 31, 2009
I want to create and populate populste several databases on my server MySQL. I pretty much know how to handle the data and queries once I have a connection, it is connecting that I don't know how to do. I have read all the help file I can find till I am sick of reading about "Northwind" which doesn't help me a t all. What I need are the three or four lines that establish a connection to MySQL at [URL] I need to be able to establish this connection transparent to the user who needs only to put thier user name and password for the site into a configuration file. Then I need to be able to create a database and give the user access with thier username and password. I know how to create the database but not how to set the username, password and permission.

I am trying to follow this userguide url... to basically build an application that will allow users to connect to my database, from an exe file. I'll try to explain as best i can. The plan is, users will launch an exe file that i have built in Visual Basic(VB) 2010 Express. When they launch the application they will see a 'login screen'.I am following the example guide (see link above), and will customise it once i can connect to the database. For some reason whenever i connect to the database it gives me two errors, the first is if i use the 'debug' mode in VB to test the script (note it doesn't produce any build errors), the second is if i build the application and run it as my users would.
1)Error Connecting to Database:Access denied for user 'mike'@'92.**.**.***' (using password:YES)
2)Error Connecting to Database:Unable to access any of the specified MySQL hosts..The ip address starred out (*) is my local machine ip address. The server is the server in which my Database runs on. 'mike' is a listed user on my 'user' table, the password i use is the password assigned to this user on my table.
3)I've rebuilt the whole VB project, but still no joy, wern't expecting it to as there were no errors generated.
4) I've read, but don't really understand that it could be something to do with my database not being able to be controlled remotely, only locally. I started digging into 'Access Your MySQL Server Remotely Over SSH', didn't really know if i was going completely off the mark, it didn't mention needing to do any of this in the guide i've been following, but just a thought. It might be the case as i've tried to access my database through a programme called MySQL Administrator. I punch in the host, username etc and connect to my database, for some reason it won't allow me to add new users, could this be because i can't control my database remotely? Would this stop what i'm trying to do working?
5) When trying to install the MySQL.Data.dll file i had great difficulty in choosing one and finding it, adding it to my project using the 'Add reference' in VB. Finnally got it how it should be (i think), installed MySQL.Data.dll Ver 6.1.2.0 into my project.

Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

I've just started learning Visual Basic 2008 and I am stuck with accessing a database through VB, I am using the Data Source Configuration Wizard. Everything goes fine until I start debugging, there is no information in any of the fields. However if I use a different computer in the house I can look at different records.

I've got a problem whereby I get Permission Denied while accessing a database via OleDB. I know how to unlock this but i'm not permitted to do so. I was wondering if ODBC would work? I'm not sure on the settings around this on my the PC where I'm going to use this application but wonder if this has less security around it. your thoughts until I can test this next week. Or is there another way you may know that I can use a database. (access)

My problem is that I have a program which needs to access images for multiple choice questions, hundreds of them. Now when I publish the program it is not taking the images with it. I have read some information by 'kleinma' regarding publishing and he says to right click on the Bin and click include in project, but when I do this there is no command in the menu for this.
I have included all of my image files in the Bin and have also added them using the resource editor, but to no avail As I have indicated it is the Express edition, could this make a difference

I have written lots of code with the ADO Library in VB Excel and previous versions of Visual Basic. With the dissappearance of the recordset object, how do we perform data manipulation with an attached Access Database? It seems things could be a lot easier, and less complicated by now, however, the best methods appear to currently remain ellusive.

I am using VB 2008 express and SQL Server 2008 express on a test basis and I used to connect VB express to a SQL database (created in SQL Server 2008 Express management studio) file and it work perfectly until my hard drive packed up and I had to get a new one, so I had to reinstall both of these again and copied my old databases from a backup I had. Now when I try to connect to the database file it cannot connect. Network related error or the instance name is incorrect. When I look at the advanced options in the connect dialog it shows my instance as .SQLExpress and my correct instance name is .SQL2008Express. I clicked OK on the connect dialog and manually changed my connection string to the correct instance and that worked but whenever I run the application in debug mode it give me the same error as above.

I added a new database using SQL Server Management studio express 2008. I can connect to that database using Web Developer and Visual Studio just fine. But when I try to connect from VB Express 2008 I get an error message "file in use by another program". VB only prompts me for the name of the database, but Web Developer and Visual Studio prompts me for both server instance and database name. I'm sure this is just something simple I'm missing.

Would like to know if it is possible to access a Primavera 6.2.1 database (.mdf) from VB 2008 Express. Would like to take advantage of the existing database, if possible.
It is easy enough to export to Excel and then develop an Access database, but I would like to avoid those steps.

Microsoft Access 2007 A Students.mdb database file Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. I was informed that one can connect to Access files with ease from the Express Edition and most of the tutorials on the internet also show this however I am encountering a problem.
I open Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition Start a new project, with a form, and then click on the Data window, and add new data sources from the Data menu.
I click on database. The problem starts with the data connection. I click New Connection Change the Data Source from Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 to Microsoft Access Database File and instead of then leading back to the other window (as happens on the tutorials for me to browse for the mdb file). Another window pops up asking me to Add a Connection.
It has the data source listed as Access and asks for a Connection String under the misc section. I type in
CODE:
When I click on Ok I get this error: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.
The Test connection button works and says connection success whether the Connection String field is empty or not but when I click OK it still gives me the same error. So I can't leave it blank either
So basically I can't connect to the Access database since I can't change the connection type and it won't just let me browse and add the file anyway.

1.Establishing a connection to a database(preferably one that is inherit within the project and can travel with it)
2. Setting the correct references to the database ( I tried connecting via JET with windows 7 and I get an error that I cannot use JET)
3. Query the database (Access) with SQL, and return those results to a recordset.
4. Loop through the recordset.
5. close the database connection
6. Open recordset and write data to table.

I have been learning about working with databases and VB. I have coded the connection string for a MS Access database to my VB project but i cannot establish a connection with my sql mdf database.
The code i used to connect to MS Access is:
<Dim dt As New DataTable()/>
<Dim match As String = ""/>
< Dim connStr As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _
[Code]....
What is the connection code in order to manipulate data from the mdf file. Is it similar to the above code.

I have recently developed a back end database in SQL server 2008 R2 and attached it to a application in VB express 2010.Everything works fine and when i publish the application, it works fine on my machine, but once i try to setup up the application on another machine i get the error message: A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server was not found or not accessible please verify the instance name is correct or allow remote connections.I have read numerous forums on this saying about changing the connection string and instance name.but with being novice i dont understand what needs to be changed etc.The sql server allows remote connections, but i am unsure what else needs changing to allow the application to work with the database on another machine.

I'm trying to connect from VB 2008 Express Edition to a database in an instance of SQL Server 2008. Both, VB and SQL Server are running on the same machine. From a VB project, when I try to define a new Data Connection I find just three Data sources available: [Code] I selected the last one but when I browse for the mdf file I cannot select it because it tells me that the file is in USE. I have stopped all the services but still I'm not able to link the database file.
Two questions: 1. Is there a way to connect to the SQL Server Instance and from there to select the desired database? 2. How to connect using the Database file.

I have now added a view in SQL Server that I want to access and use in VB Express. However on clicking "Refresh" for the dataset the new view does not display in the available objects, only those I originally imported and opened with the original dataset. What, pleas am I doing wrong? How can I see this new View?

It's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework? It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database. To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed. What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.
