Application - Self Update In Runtime

I want to make my applications to have a self update function. My applications have only one file, the main .exe. For updating, I want to use the best way: the program download it's new version overwriting itself; and on next start the program will be the updated version. I tried to use the ShadowCopyFiles, but all the times the main file is locked, so cannot overwrite it (or delete or anything). I found many examples in the internet like this:

i m having problem while updating my database... In this code when i delete records then it will deleted but it can't show updated data..for viewing new updated data i hav to again open the form ... so is there any code which i miss? to update database @ runtime?

I have a project with widnow forms. On a form i hava a textbox, datagridview and a button. My datagridview is bounded to my database. I will like some help with updating datagridview with text that i add with my button to database. I tried the update and refresh on my datagridview but there is no update seen when form is active. I am popolating a DataGridView with a DataSet from an SQL database like in example bellow.
After I am making some changes I need to know how can I save modified data in SQL database>
Let's say that I have a form with a DGV and a button. On load I will put ten lines from a tbale from database inside the DGV. Then i will make some changes and after that when I click on the button I need to save the modified information. Everything has to be done on runtime.

I have designed and published my small created app with WINDOWS FORMS using VB 2010 EXP on Windows 7. I can only install the app on the machine that I used to develop the app.I want to install the app on another computer but I cannot. I usually have error reports.
Example:Unable to install or run this application. This application requires Microsoft Common Language Runtime 4.0.3 to be installed on your computer.
what can I do to be able to install the app on a different computer which does not have .Net and does not have visual basic 2010 installed.

I am working on a silverlight project in which i am using the entity data model. I have a consol application in the same solution through which i am creating the database table at runtime. Now when i moves to silverlight page i need to update those newly created database table in the entity data model. Is there any way to update model at runtime.

I've got quite a big application and I've just started noticing that not all runtime errors cause an error.
for example if I call a function that executes an SQL query and the query string uses invalid syntax or refers to a field that doesn't exist then that would normally cause an error at runtime. But it doesn't - as soon as it hits the error the function simply returns to the caller.
If I enclose the code in a try/catch then the error is trapped but, while developing, I just want a good old runtime error but not getting one.

I am making a video conversion tool. I have a listview with one item per file.And i also have options to add subtitles to movies. I want it to be like this:Say the user add 2 movies. He select the first movie in the listview and then go to the subtitle tab beside. There he checks a checkbox so he can add subtitles. Some controls comes up that allows he to browse for subtitle and select which language the subtitle is. Then when he has selected these options, he select the other movie, the program saves the subtitle data somewhere and then erases all fields so he can fill them with a subtitle for the other movie.
My.Settings is way to simple for this. But i don't want SQL or db related stuff.Is there a good storing way i have missed?

I'm trying to update pictures boxes with images of controls stored in an imagelist owned by a control. The images stored in the control.imagelist do not showup in the picturebox. I'm working on simplifying the code to post, but for now could use help.If I store the image in a member variable owned bythe control it woks fine.Something to do with persistance of images in control owned imagelist? I develop windows applications in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008. Recently I reloaded my pc and moved from XP to Windows 7 64 bit. Now when I am debugging, when I should get a runtime error, the executable instead locks up when it should bring up the code with the line that it crashed on like you'd expect in debug.
This doesn't happen all the time, only when I get a runtime error in a separate assembly that is not in the assembly I'm debugging. It used to work fine, but now it locks up. If I run the executable outside of Visual Studio (without debug) I at least get a runtime error like you'd hope for. I don't even get that when debugging.

I have developed an application using VB.NET (.NET 2.0). I have put an exe on 4 client machines, it works fine on 3 clients but fourth gives me the following error:

sir, i have no idea how the code will look, but i want it to assign a value after reading from a text file and then store it for further use even if the text file is not there, but without using any external storage like registry, disk, ram. It should store the value in itself and do like this:-

I have a WinForm program developed in VB.Net with Visual Studio 2005. The program needs Microsoft Office Runtime installed atleast on the computer to allow the application to run without any errors.
Is their a way to check the computer to see if the minimum of the Runtime or Microsoft Office is installed on the computer? If either isn't I would like to display a message to the user on the startup of the application that states to atleast go to Microsot's site (I have full link to Runtime Download) and download the runtime for free.
Or is their a way to include the runtime as a component with my install for the application so if it isn't installed on the computer already it will install when the application is installed?

I'm in a VB.NET application. I have referenced some java.* namespaces in my file and am utilizing objects and methods from this namespace throughout the code. Presumably this is relying upon J# to compile.
Imports java.util
Imports java.util.zip
Imports java.io
Are these JDK namespaces fully contained in the .NET framework, or will my clients need to have Java installed when they go to run my application?As a side note, I have not explicity referenced any external Java DLL's or anything. This is all pure .NET as far as my code is concerned.

I have the following code: [code] and it's ment to change the backcolor of a label during runtime, which works.But when I use the same code and use it in a smart device - Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC it don't work and comes up with the following error:'ColorTranslator' is not a member of 'Drawing'.Is there a way I can change the backcolor of the label during runtime when creating a smart device application (windows Mobile application) ? You can change the connection string at run-time like this. You make the connection string setting available for writing as a separate property inside the MySettings class:

Then, in some place when the application is being initialized (before using any table adapters of typed datasets), write something like:
My.Settings.RunTimeConnectionString = My.Settings.ProductionConnectionString
Where ProductionConnectionString is a simple String setting. It is a User Scope setting so every user can change it (by assigning a value to it, similar to the code above) and save it by calling My.Settings.Save()This code works well for connection strings which were initially created in the main project and stored in it's settings (= app.config file).
The connection string in the app.config actually has a longer name: MyApp.MySettings.MyConnectionString.When you have a connection string stored in the app.config in a class library project, and reference that project in the main project, the app.config files will somehow be merged, so the class library has it's settings.The thing that don't know how to do, is change a setting from the class library at run-time. I could copy the connection string setting from the class library to the main project's app.config. I must keep the same name, which looks something like: MyClassLibrary.My.MySettings.MyConnectionString.Can the same principle I showed above be somehow applied to this second connection string?

I have written an application for a customer, and the application is run in various locations around the world. The company carefully controls the release of the software to the various buildings where it is being used, and because of this, I have made use of the "Check for updates" feature. The problem I am faced with, is that the folks using this software more often than not answers "NO" when prompted to download and install the latest version of the application. This is unacceptable and ultimately, we'll need to go in and have them manually install the software.
We don't publish updates to the software w/o meaning for them to be necessary, and I find it hard to believe that Microsoft doesn't recognize this sort of thing as being needed when they designed the update procedures. Alas, this seems to be the case.

I would like to implement update to my applications but not in the automated fashion. I would like the user to check for update, through version control in my database, and if there is a newer version, it will automatically shutdown the user's application and run the update (copy and replace files in the users application folder). After the update, it would restart the application for use. I was thinking in creating a .msi for creating and replacing files, still don't know how to create it! My main concern is to be able to implement a proven and correct .Net method for Updating applications. A best practice for deploying and executing updates to my applications.
