Sep 1, 2009I have a Windows form Application that I am creating, could also be a Windows Service that I need to run.There are basically 2 Classes that were converted from java to vb.net and 1 xml file to this. for testing purposes I would like to use the Button.click event to manually run the code.However i get an error when trying to call the sub/function the normal way.I even tried to put this classes information in the Public Class Form1 but it keeps on giving me errors.This is the Sub:

so how do I call it from a Button.click event?
normally i would just do a "call main()" and it works however this time it is not because of the (byVal args() as string)

VS 2008 Cross-thread Error, Change Control Property By (other) Class Event PropertyChanged?
Apr 1, 2010I need some help to understand my options to get this working. I try to update a textbox control by a property-changed event from a class variable. I've digged around for a day and have a vague understanding that this can be solved in three ways:
1. Using some "if InvokeRequired", "Invoke" code in the handler method
2. By programming a special delegate class for this variable
3. By using a databinding directly linking the control (textbox) to the class event
Now.. Are these options correct? And would it be possible to get some help to show these three solutions in actual code (relevant to mine)? I can't seem to manage to sort all the information to a working code. Also, what are the pros and cons of the different solutions?
As my code stands now, it's obviously none of the above, as it gives a cross-thread error, as indicated.

Jun 16, 2010I created a simple user control and everything went fine.Then I created another of the same control (as a different project) from scratch (creating the controls in a different configuration; but pasting code from the previous one from a text file).As far as I know I did everything the same for creating a user controlCreate a Class Library project Then Project>Add New Item> User Control Then delete the initial class that was added automatically (usually named Class1.vb) Put all of my code and components into the user control class.However, when I wanted to run it in the debugger as I did in the previous project, I now get an error message:"A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly."

The result:Application runs, no errors or exceptions.Displayed is the listbox and the Start button.I press the start button and a msgbox says "Not Invoked" as expected and upon clicking OK to that msgbox "Start Button Pressed" is added to the Output listbox control.Immediately following that the msgbox pops up again and says "Not Invoked". I was expecting "Invoked" as a separate thread is trying to use the Output listbox control.Of course this results in the Output.Items.Add being attempted which results in no visible result as the thread is not allowed to directly update the UI control.

Can a usercontrol inherate an application defined class ie.. could you inheritance a classic rect class into a user control to add the hight and width properties to the control without having to do all the coding all over again? Currently I just declair a private instance of the class within the control and then encapsalate. It would be nice if I could just inherit all the functionality of my classes into controls designed to implament the classes.

end sub and it should popup a string, let's say "cool", plus i shld be able to use special() in every single sub but if we call special() from a function it should be rejected. how can that be done?

Feb 7, 2012So, I am reorganizing a winform application I wrote to make it more readable and maintainable. The previous structure I used had:
1- a login form with some connection objects
2- an import process start form with some import objects
3- a log writer class that receives data from the import process and writes a log file at the end of the import process
The code quickly got too messy, so my goal now is:
1- a login form with only form events
2- an import form with only form events
3- a class with all the functions
Basically, my class with all the functions (3) looks like this:

String Class Does Not Have Left Function
Mar 15, 2010Since the string class does not have a Left method, how would you do this in VB.Net. I could use String.SubString(0, x), but the problem with this method is that it throws an exception if the String is not at least x characters long. Should I use the Microsoft.VisualBasic.Left function instead?
