I am studying Visual Basic How to Progra by Deitel on my own. I am a beginner. My last two programs I have received the error message: Sub Main() not found. I am certain that I typed it in underneat Module Comparison. The program will not run.
Could it be a naming problem? If so can I correct it without re-typing the entire program.
I am using 2008 Visual Basic Trial Edition. Would it be better to use 2010 Visual Studio Professional?

I am trying to update an Oracle Database record and i keep getting this error:
ORA-01704: string literal too long 5
I looked up that error and it seems that i have a limit of 4000 charters since i am using Oracle 10g. However, the prgblem is that its the same exact data i am putting back into that record so that is why i am unsure as to why its giving me that error for the same amount of data i took out of it.
Here is my update code:
Dim myCommand As New OracleCommand()
Dim ra As Integer

I am creating a question and answer form and I have created a couple of error message boxes that will show up on different events. With the first set of code below it is supposed to show up when a user doesn't check any radio buttons and clicks the next button, however when the message appears even if they click ok it moves onto the next question without letting them chose an answer. For the second set of code it asks if a user wants to retry but even if they click X to cancel the message it still reverts back to the main page.
If rbAnswer1.Checked + rbAnswer2.Checked + rbAnswer3.Checked = False Then MsgBox("You must select an answer to continue.", _
MsgBoxStyle.Critical Or MsgBoxStyle.Question, _ "Error")
MsgBox("Are you sure you wish to retry? All current progress will be lost", _
MsgBoxStyle.Question Or MsgBoxStyle.Question, _
"PowerPoint Quiz")

I try to define a connection to an ODBC source by giving the user access to "odbcad32.exe" via the shell function.
Here you can see my codesnippet. During runtime I get a "file not found" message, that is completely surprising to me. I had checked the existence of the application in the first place.

I'm trying to do the most simplest of things... open a text file. Not System.IO, just plain open a text file like you would double click it in widows.I have no problems executing other exe files with the Shell command but when I try:
Code:'...some code
If System.IO.File.Exists(FILE_NAME) = True Then Shell(FILE_NAME)
'some code...
I get "file not found"...
But if I do:
Code:'...some code
If System.IO.File.Exists(FILE_NAME) = True Then MsgBox("File Exists") Else MsgBox("File Does Not Exist") End If
'some code...
the message that pops up is "File Exists"!I also checked the FILE_NAME in a msgbox and the file path is correct. What could be wrong?

I created a simple program which basically launches programs installed on 32-bit system in the C:Program Files directory. I purposely put an .exe line of code in the compiler but that .exe wasn't installed on the system, I was expecting for an error when I tried to click the launch button and I did. NOTE: I already have a beginning If statement and that program is actually installed in the system, works perfectly no errors appearing.
ElseIf lstMultimedia.SelectedItem = "HyperCam" Then Process.Start("C:Program FilesHyperCam 2HyCam2.exe") 'this program doesn't exist in the system"
When the error appeared I looked at it in detail and found it was a system.componentmodel.win32exception type of error, I'm guessing that means a file doesn't exist in the directory I specified therefore the program displays an error. Now what I want to do is display a message box saying along the lines "This program cannot be found in your system" or something like that. But I don't know what the actual syntax/code for it, so far from thinking I have this.
Else : lstMultimedia.SelectedItem = 'no idea what to put here Then MessageBox.Show("This application cannot be found in your system or is installed in a different directory", "Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error)
End If

I have now wasted over two days going round & round in circles with the pathetic excuse for a Help System Microsoft now makes us put up with (& nearly blown my monthly broadband data cap doing so).I have lost count of the links that do not exist. The Give Feedback option also does not work (I do not like Microsoft Outlook, & in spite of having set Windows Mail as the default mail that doesn't work either!).Every VB example I have downloaded has failed to operate as it should (if at all), so surprise, surprise nor does my implementation of what they say is how to do it! please give me the "exec summary" version of what I need, ON ONE PAGE which is: Correct way (& syntax) to (in VB code):
1 Open an existing SQL compact 3.5 database THAT IS WHERE I SPECIFY - NOT WHERE the wizards keep saying it is(it against my instructions)!
2 Search to see if a particular record exists in the database (eg WHERE ColumnName. FieldContents = ContentsImLookingFor)?
3 Retrieve the found record into my own record buffer?
3 Add the record if it does not exist?
4 Change the record?
5 Delete the record?
6 Close the database?
The rest I will do MY WAY, a thousand times faster & more efficiently than anything I've seen "documented" so far. Surely that is not a huge ask requiring GBs of "Help" garbage leading nowhere?I've only been programming for 25 years (but not in this environment),

I recently upgraded the MS SQL Server installed on my personal computer from 2005 Express to 2008 Express. Problem is when I try to add an SQL database file to a project using VS 2005 I get an error message saying that the version of my database server is not supported, I must have SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 or later installed. I didn't do it yet but I'm pretty sure that when I open the other projects that I included a database file to it, I'm going to get the same error.
My question is it possible to have two SQL Servers installed on my machine? If so, is it a good idea to have two DB servers in the same machine?

I have this application that updates information to a database. I had it working but whether I have deleted or changed something accidentally I don't know. This is the error that appears:
See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.
************** Exception Text **************
System.InvalidCastException: Conversion from string "SBS-resources" to type 'Integer' is not valid. ---> System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format.

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer rather than be handled by this dialog box.

It shows the error that my ID is NULL which its not when i look it clearly shows in the form i filled up before submitting. The generated ID on the text box doesn't seem to be forwarded to the database.

I've added a database to my application with 2 fields:"ip" address and "started" that holds the number the application was started from that specific IP.I want to upload the database to my site hosted at google.sites. When the program is started it should make a connection with the following cases:
1-no connection with the database (possible no internet available) - it should display an error message
2-there is connection, the IP is not stored on the database, it addes the IP to the database and the field "started" with the value 1
3-there is connection, the IP is stored on the database, it increments the field "started" by 1

I have names of all labels in a table of an Access database (one field is a form name- it can be repeated, the second field is a label name - it must be unique for the same form, the third field is a text of this label). E.g. the first record has field1="Form1", field2="Label1", field3="Smith" My question: How can I refer to a label programmatically using the Access database? E.g. Form1.Label1.Text= "Smith" In C languge there was the opportunity "remove the quotation marks" from the text ("Label1") and get the literal (Label1). Is this opportunity in VB.NET?
