View 1 RepliesI am building a program using VS 2010.It needs to be a set of forms that allows a manager to log in so that data entry people can enter in data based on another form.I also need to create a hot key set up that pulls up another form so that a supervisor can pull up the information that employees have entered.I have my solution file that I can put up for a download if needs be to see what I'm talking about. I don't think it should be that hard to make this program work.

The original author is using FileGet to retrieve just the last 127 characters of each mp3 file. The issue is that this information is put into strings declared like this...

This part all works fine. But I'm trying to code a property that returns a string like this...
return strTitle & " - " & strArtist
But for some odd reason it is being very strict about the length of the returned string. It usually just returns the strTitle, and not the " - " or strArtist, and if I switch the positions, it will just return strArtist. So obviously both Strings have information in them.
I'm an intermediate programmer, but just breaking into VB.NET. I'm not sure what the New String(" ",30) part does, but it is definitely interfering with the string concatenation that I'm trying to return. Anyone ever had a similar issue?
I've tried String.Copy, String.Concat, etc. I've also tried doing ReadtoEnd(), but it takes forever for just 10 mp3 files, so I can't imagine how long it would take with a whole library. The only thing that slightly works is if I do... return strTitle.SubString(0,5) & " - " & strArtist.SubString(0,5)
But like I said, coincidentally it will only return around 30 characters.
Do I need to have MSAccess installed in order for a VB.NET application to use an .MDB?
View 10 RepliesI am creating a reporting app that pulls information off of a Sql database and populates the data in a datagridview control (DVG). I am using tab pages (Tabcontrol), and I have about 10 tabs with within the control. What I have done is created a dynamic control that will populate in each tab page once the tab is selected. I am using a split container and in my split container.panel 1 is where all my buttons and search functionality will be. In my split container.panel2 to is where the main DGV control will be. I have got this to function properly, however now I am unable to add anything to my split container.panel1. I would like to add diffrent labels and buttons in the panel1 one without putting another panel on top of the split container.panel1, and also if i do this when I resize my container the panel will just sit there. I am using the selected index changed event to get my split container to show in each of the diffrent tabs

Im developing an app in VB.NET 3.5 and uses an msaccess database. when the app run by firtstime look for some config files including this example.mdb but if this msaccess file doesnt exist the app should be able to create it and create the tables for being used later.
View 3 RepliesI am a sys admin for a company and our programmer left several months ago. a program they wrote is now failing and i am struggling to work out why. the program basically pulls data from a csv file into a readable form, written in visual basic. the application works on a couple of machines but not on a couple of others. i have matched up .Net framework versions, MS Primary Interop Assembly versions, still no joy. As the app works on some pc's i am wondering what other differences could cause this?

The application should be able to store at least 10 motor class objects in an array, create an input form in the application that allow users to input new motor records to be added to the array and create another form that displays all the motors in the array in a list box. This is what I got so far, I know its not much, but whats really puzzling me is how am I suppose to show all the data in the listbox in the second form.

i am trying to build an application where a specified number of cells are spoken from an excel file. what i want is something similar to what happens in excel, once u click play one cell after the other is selected and spoken and it automatically moves forward to the next, speaks and so on... but if i use voicecombo/SAPI.spvoice the UI freezes! any ideas?

I want to compress an ms access database using vb.net. If the database is open this fails. How can I close the database, compress it, then reopen the database using vb.net code to accomplish this. I've already successfully written the code for compression, but I can't find anything on closing the database while leaving ms access open.

I will now have to reinstall visual basic 2005(.net framework 2) instead of visual basic 2008(3.5 .net framework). I was wondering- will it be completely different vb2005 and vb2008? I really wanted to stick to vb2008, I was getting the hang of it. Also, I was wondering, can I run my application vb2008 in .net framework? Is there any way around? Also, I used advanced installer to build a setup file for my application? Now the question is will the other computer(the one which will install from the set up) need .net framework of 3.5(since I built apps in vb2008)?

There are about 30 CustomEdit (inheriting classes), all of them has methods "Load","Save" and "Delete". The require for this existing system is to add a readonly user. Possible solutions considering the cost of works:
1) Modify the BaseEdit so all CustomEdit can stay the same. The system will check 'user role' in session by using httpcontext then to accept or reject the user's action.

View 3 RepliesI've created a VB.NET Windows Form application which pulls info from an MSAccess database via datasets and tableadapter. When the user makes a change to the data, I use the Update method of the tableadapter to send the changes back to the database. This all works fine in the Visual Studio 2008 IDE, but once the build is done and the application is installed, I run into problems. The application keeps the original data and will not read or write to the database, although any changes I make through the application are mysteriously saved somewhere. If I make changes directly to the database using MS Access - which I need to be able to do - those changes don't show up in the data pulled into the application.

this works fine to trap out numbers from letters but the problem i am getting is when the program calls uppon LastName it is recording 0 and wanted to know if there is a way of getting past this ..... so basically i need a way to allow letter but not numbers and symbols and then dispay a pernolised error message but at the same time use Stream writer to save was the answer is in a .txt file.
I am using VB2005 and trying to put an application together.What it needs to do is retrieve information from a binary file, possibly alter that information, and put it back into a new file.The file is a .wav file with data appened to the end. There is an additional section at the end of the .wav file which stores xml data.I have found that if I open this in a hex editor and make a 1:1 swap on any of the bytes that the application that the file is for can still read the XML.If I tried to add or remove characters from the XML then it would not read. I located a header byte and incremented it to resolve this.
This worked as an excellent bandage to do conversions where the data always needed to be changed to the same thing.What I have been asked to do is build logic that allows for different things to happen depending upon what data is contained within the file.The method that I am currently trying to impliment is:
Read through the file with a system.io.binaryreader
Searche for a bytestream that will signal data is coming
For example:

If I proceed with this method, I will have to read the file one time to gather the information and then a second time to write it all out with the header modified for length.This is my first experiene with working with binary files in this way.Also,I've been experiementing with building a string and slapping it back in at the end using the binarywriter.write(string) method.I noticed that it was putting in header characters before the string.These seem to change if I change the length of the string.At one point it was d0 07. Later it became e7 07. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this header from being inserted?
I tried a for each loop to grab all of the characters from the string, convert them to a byte array and deposit the byte array into the file, but the header remained the same. When I write the byte array generated from a system.io.binaryreader I do not get this header.
